I Brought My Stock ZL1 Camaro To The Drag Strip! Didn’t Go The Way I Wanted It To…

  • I was finally able to make some quarter-mile passes in my 2018 Camaro ZL1! I learned very quickly that 650 horsepower and street tires do not play nicely together on a prepped surface.
It was not the best track day but I learned a lot and know what I need to improve on. Didn’t get a single good run due to small things with my car and some mistakes on my part.
Along with that, 1st gear was super lazy even with a burnout, traction control turned off and the car in track mode. Turns out, the car performed best during my first pass of the night. No burnout. Traction control on. Launching from idle.
In the end, it’s all about practice! This testing session was all about learning the car. I didn’t expect everything to be perfect. Launching a manual car on the drag strip is a whole lot harder than I expected. I need more practice (and a radial tire) but I will be back better than before!

I have a stock 6-speed 2020 Camaro LT1 and ran a best 12.322 @ 117.01 mph. Couple of caveats to this. 1. I lowered the tire pressure down to about 22 psi. 2. This was at Island Dragway in late October 2022 when the temperature was around 44* and the density altitude was -500 ft. 3. Up until that point, I'd had nearly 100 passes on the car in the previous 18 months. The only way to get a good time is: lower your tire pressure on the driven wheels, wait for the "perfect" weather, lots and lots of practice. My FIRST run ever at the track with the same car was an abysmal 14.008 @ 108 mph... second pass ever was a 13.7 @ 110 mph. It took at least a dozen passes before I got my first 12-second pass (12.958 @ 114 mph). And after I found the perfect launch method - I get repeatable 12.4x-12.6x @ 115-116 mph - assuming the DA is less than 1,000 ft. What I notice is when people on the web talk about their time slips they only ever show their hero runs - and never talk about their progression from start to finish as they learn the car. Also, street tires play very well on prepped surfaces. I raced a no-prep 1/8 mile event ONCE and ran 9.0 @ 88 mph. My best 1/8 mile time on a prepped surface was 8.099 @ 91.9 mph (and 8.105 @ 92.1 mph). Street tires don't need a huge burnout unless the track temperature is cold (like it was for me at Island that day 44*) Otherwise, you're just looking cool and wasting rubber.

As a german petrolhead, owning an imported 2017 ZL1 with a 6MT as well, I can tell you that the feeling this car gives you isn´t comparable to anything else I´ve driven until today. And knowing this, numbers for 1/4 mile become 2nd ranked. Even more knowing that the true power of this car in a stright line is from a roll which is the more usual situation today.

I have a 2018 Camaro ZL1 with the 10 speed auto. On the line lock, don't know if you know this or not, but when you use the line lock...it will let you do a burnout for 15 seconds then the car will shut off and apply the parking brake. You can see the seconds count down from 15 to 0. To release it and drive out of the burnout, hit your cruise control button and your select button on your steering wheel to cancel it out.

Beautiful Camaro. Sounded awesome with my headphones! You gave an honest and insightful analysis of your runs. I'm no expert, but I thought street tires should not go through the water box only slicks. Keep posting, will follow your progress. Shiny side up!

    • @osos231
      @osos231 Před rokem +1

@allanmiller3 If you're running street tires, you should avoid the water box. Street tires, specifically the front tires will carry water up to the staging lane. Water drips down fenders and lingers. If you have skinnies and slicks then it's fine.

No matter what kind of tire it is avoid it with the front if u can and pull all the way thru with the rears out of the puddle so you dont fling water everywhere or you will just spin em again when u launch.

My very first time down the drag strip at Firebird Raceway was in my 1968 Mustang Restomod. I ran 11.71@121mph.
Unfortunately, I was not allowed to race again until I had the proper safety equipment installed such as battery disconnect, fuel shutoff switch, drag bars, etc. Each time bracket had certain safety prerequisites assuming you already knew where you stood.
Being that it was my first time, I had no idea what I would run but I knew it would be quick. After all, she [my Mustang] cost me four girlfriends, two and half jobs and a copious amount of money back in my high school days and I miss her dearly.
    Stay classy my friend.

Unfortunately my advice is the same as some others, you need to learn how to drive fast, learn how to launch with no nannies, ride the clutch and keep up the RPM to get your 60 foot times down to 2.0 flat with street tires, leave your shifting hand off the wheel and onto the shifter, and no need for gloves, lean how to speed shift, learn how to shift as close to 6500 rpm as possible, the Zl1 manual car bone stock should be running high 11s at 120mph easily, with a drag radial and a driver, the car should be a low 11 sec car with trap speeds low 120's

Don't add more power until you can launch the car a lot more aggressively. If your axles are the weak link. Then replace those first.
With your HP and slicks leaving aggressively, you'll break parts. Get those first. Otherwise you'll never go quicker. Have fun! Nice car

    Don't use track mode.
Use tour or sport atleast, suspension in track is to stiff and doesn't allow it to squat and transfer weight to rear. And it looks like your moving your hand down to the shifter to late u need to keep it there with a manual.. I have a manual Z also. headers exhaust and intake (570 hp atw) with 17inch wheels with Mt SS and I've ran a 11.7 @ 122 on the street with dragy. Love your vid though bro keep them coming

Dude nice car, but what's up with the two hands on the wheel? You are losing so much time. Try keeping your right hand on the stick instead of having to go from steering wheel to stick for your up shifts..
Also it sounds like you are short shifting the hell out of it. In that car hitting your up shifts harder at a higher rpm you should be in the low 12's- high 11's... You want those times you need to be a bit more aggressive.. All day!!!
    Beautiful car.. Enjoy

Beautiful car, exactly like mine except mine is 2019. I have a few comments.
Conventional wisdom says not to do extensive burnouts on street tires, they get greasy and traction gets worse.
Tour mode will probably work better, the suspension should be soft to allow for weight transfer to the rear tires.
You already know, traction control off. The ZL1 has good traction control in all modes but it's not calibrated for drag racing.
The stock axles are quite strong, you should be able to launch fairly aggressively as long as you lift immediately in a wheel hop event.
Launch control is decent but not for hero times, it's nice for controlling variables to get some consistency out of the car.
Start foot launching once you're comfortable and have learned from what you observe using launch control, IMO.
When foot launching, clutch riding too long or being timid on the dump will cost you money. It's often worse to slip the clutch gently and drag out a slow launch than to engage a strong clutch aggressively. The stock clutch can take it, once you're confident.
Practice faster shifting, use the no lift shift feature of the car, and if necessary, you can leave your hand on the shifter. There's a cost to keeping your hand on the shifter, you're less capable of reacting in the event the car gets out of sorts. Eventually you can keep both hands on the wheel and just move more quickly or be more preemptive with your movement to shift on time and still maximize safety.
No lift shifting and missing is very hard on the drivetrain, and it's unwise to bang them out in high volume on a prepped surface or on a modded car. Use it sparingly, when you're ready for that perfect run.
