- Adopted twins who were born in China but grew up in different cities or countries and were later reunited are being studied by researchers seeking answers to the age-old question of nature vs. nurture. Erin Moriarty of "48 Hours" reports on the remarkable lessons being learned from these identical siblings.
It should be a law that twins cannot be adopted separately, there are so many parents who would definitely adopt them together if given the option.
You bet! It is absolutely horrible to separate twins or siblings! Those parents try hard to make it work but they are selfish because one should just take them both and that's it (why should a child sees his/her twin only once a year?!!) it 's tragic

@@ceciliachannel2022 that's because international adoptions do not happen overnight. it's a long long process and over that time, they fall in love with their adopted child already. through the pictures that the agency/orphanage sends them and counting down the days until they are able to fly in and pick up their child.
they are already bonded to their child. for all intents and purposes, that little girl is their child on day 1 just as much as it is 5 years later, 15 years later. you can't seriously suggest to one set of parents to abandon their child after a big emotional investment and committing to raising that child. that's not how this works. it's not the adoptive parents' fault
many overseas adoption agencies separate twins and siblings because they think it makes the children more easily adoptable. often times, when children get to a certain age, there are less and less prospective parents for older children. the agencies try to adopt out the kids as soon as possible, especially for parents looking to bringing home a baby/toddler.
i do believe many parents would absolutely adopt twins/triplets/siblings etc together if they knew but quite frequently, the agencies withhold those details for fear of the parents who go into the process intending to adopt 1 child.
These parents are SO FRIGGIN AWESOME for caring enough to do the right thing by these kids. I'm humbled and in awe of them.
Yeah but not a lot of them lucky enough, like sometimes there're adoptive child who being raped or abused by their adoptive parents😢

But it´s lucky that they were both adopted to countries where they speak English ,just imagine one had been adopted not to England but to France or Germany or Sweden that would have made things a bit more complicated.they would have realized they look alike but wouldn´t have been able to understand what the other one said when they were little

As an adoptee, the terminology is "biological", not "real". Or if your adoptive parents are decent people, they just become your parents (no additional title needed). Parents (adoptive) vs Biological

It is wonderful that the adopted family is making such an effort to keep the sisters’ relationship healthy.
I love how the families have gone to such lengths to let the twins connect! This is so sweet, and a wonderful thing for them all! I think they so need their twins in their lives! Beautiful!

Sometimes reporters ask seemingly stupid questions because they want the person to say out loud what they are feeling or thinking. Otherwise an interview might just be a person smiling and nodding and then crying.

“Abandoned” aka the government came in snatched the babies from their homes and requested large amounts of money as a fine that the families couldn’t pay.

They were abandoned because they were girls. China had a one baby rule and if that baby was a girl, they were left behind and the family would have more babies until a boy was born and could keep the family name going.
@@patron40silver Not always. I was adopted from China. I know families who have adopted girls and boys from China. It wasn't just the one child policy. It had to do with finances. Mothers who gave birth to a child with health conditions like a hole in the heart were given up. The parents hoped the child would survive if adopted by a couple with better finances. At that time China's economy was not doing well.
That is true! Although in this case BOTH twins were put up for adoption.
Nature vs Nurture is such an incredible study. Despite the hardships that come with twins being separated at birth, it does provide answers to the wonderings. I was adopted as a baby, and once I met my biological parents in my early twenties, I realized my nature came out in the similarities I had with their mannerisms and interests. My nurture, however, is rooted in my Mother and Father who raised me. They gave me gifts and experiences and love that I would have never known without their presence.
As I know, at my hometown back in China, some of villagers ABANDONED baby girls, while others KILLED baby girls!!!! Thanks for all kind adopters!
I'm Rosa and I have an identical twin named Keira, and we were both inseparable. We did everything together, and you couldn't tell us apart unless you looked at our neck. Keira has a freckle on the right side of her neck, and I don't. Keira was always closer to our dad, and I was always closer to our mother. When our parents divorced when we were thirteen, our mother moved to New York, whereas our father moved to Seattle. Keira left to Seattle, and I went with my mother. I haven't seen her in nine months, because it's hard for her to fly down just to see me, because it's alot of money...I miss her everyday, and she doesn't use social media often, so the last time I've even talked to her online was 8 months ago. I miss her everyday, and I'm really emotional when it comes to talking about her. She was my best friend, my mirror, my strong side and my sister all in one, and now it's like we're strangers. My dad will call me, and tell me how good she's doing and that she loves me, but I haven't heard her voice in so long that I'll sometimes talk to myself just to hear what she sounds like.... I really miss her.
(What's even worse is that we were a part of triplets, and our other sister died when we were six, because of a heart condition, her name was Emily. I'll sometimes look in then mirror and wonder if that's what she'd look like now...everything is so hard without either of my sisters...)
Oh Rosa, that is so sad. It must feel like your heart was ripped out. Sometimes parents don't realize the hurt they cause, probably because they, themselves, are hurting, and are focused on that. It seems odd that your dad will call, but not put your sister on the phone, too. If your sister doesn't have access to Internet, how about if you guys keep in touch with snail mail? It's not the same as hearing her voice, and you both probably have a lot to say. But there's nothing so much fun as getting a real letter or card in the mail. That's how people have kept in touch for centuries. Even just as recently as 30 years ago, just before the Internet and cell phones became available, there was just long distance landline phone calls (expensive) and letter writing. It may seem archaic, but give it a try. Surprise your sister with a card or letter, and ask her to write back. It will be fun!

The mothers who promised to keep them in contact was so touching. It must be so hard for both the mothers and the girls to be so far apart. Glad we live in the social media age so they can stay close

James Loftus - you’re correct! Oddly enough, my name is Evie, but so many people through my 68 years get it wrong and call me Eva. Can’t imagine having a twin named Eva. It must REALLY be confusing 😃

James Loftus Hi I’m a Chinese. Evie and Eva are not Chinese names , we can’t make these two names as our official names. We uses Pinyin and Chinese characters. For example, we can translate Eva to Chinese charter “伊娃” ，but when we translate “伊娃” to Pinyin, it will become “yi wa” not Eva. My English is not good but hope this reply will help you a little bit to understand the Chinese names :)
I don't understand why they don't send out twins for adoption together! I'm sure there are couples who want twins(like myself).
I love that the one set of twins only live 4 hours apart. What awesome parents to go through all the effort to keep that connection.

I was thinking the same thing. Fraternal twins have no chance of ever finding each other even if they were to stand face to face with each other unless there were some obvious similarities.

My mum grew up with her parents in Germany and later moved to Sicily while her identical twin sister lived with their grandparents in Milan they didn’t live together until six but can still remember the separation for those years apart!

The twin bond is like no other. I have a twin sister and we aren't identical but that doesnt matter the bond is still there. She'll always be my best friend no matter what and I don't know what I'd do without her.

Tony Gambino they dont know the baby had a twin. They state that in the videos orphanages seperated them due to demand. Pretty sure all those parents would adopt both kids if they knew there was a twin.

Cannot . Every adopt parents cannot take 2 adopted child but 1 . Also they have rules about that. And in chine they will not tell if the babys have twin or not cos that will make them in trouble . So many like that. So lucky this couple twin can show but some twin dont know where they twin or never meet .
I was adopted when I was 5 along with my twin sister and my older siblings. They did adopt us all together with my family but that cant always happen. Sad though cuz I'd be constantly wondering about my twin sister if we hadn't been raised together.

With the 1 child law in China and most families wanting boys, it's not unusual if you think about it.
Not anymore, China now has a 2 child policy.

I was hoping this piece would have included the 2 Chinese sisters with “birth dates” one day apart on paper who were adopted by 2 American families and then ironically and unknowingly both named Mia by their adoptive parents. The story ran years ago on Oprah.

It’s wonderful these parents are making the effort to let these twins see each other and have a relationship. I’m an identical twin, and although we looked just alike growing up, we kind of took on our own look as we got older.

I’m a Twin I can’t imagine being separated from my sister my whole life thank God we were born in Los Angeles California so our parents love us and kept us. My Dad is also a Twin. We have 18 sets on my Fathers side of our Family👬👭👫👭👫👭👭👫👭👭

I predicted when i first saw the documentary that these girls were going to reunite and that distance wouldn't keep them apart and God heard my words! Now they're together more not all the time but enough to keep that bond!! Good job to the those who found them!! girls God bless!!

To see how much nurture and culture are doing on people I think study on separated twins who live in different conditions (like developed vs. developing countries) should help better. Swedish singer Alice Svensson and her identical twin sister is an example
So basically want to ignore the entire 11 minute video because the idea that people's behavioral traits are a product of their genes; because it hurts your egalitarian feels.
And how many of those could they collect for a study? Even here where there are hundreds of twins growing apart, they only had 17 sets when the video was made.
And this might actually work better because the twins have similar possibilities. Like you couldn't find out that the sisters had the same taste in clothing if they had access to very different clothing.

Specifically, how big of a sample size would you need to accept the overwhelming amount of evidence?

My oldest brothers are identical twins. They are completely different, though oddly enough have always lived in close proximity to each other most of their life.

As a molecular biologist I think it's ridiculous the researcher concluded its all nature not nurture... These children went through extreme trauma at a very early age before they were adopted and these early experiences have way more impact than we realize in shaping personality.

It's so sad when siblings are separated. My long term foster son has an older brother that has gone back to live with the biological parents and even though he's only seen him a few times in supervised visits over the last year, he often takes a toy to kindergarten that he calls the brother. This morning I had to pretend to hold the brother and the "baby" (him) in my arms and comfort them. When he's acting up before bed time and runs in circles around me while I try to put his pjs on him, he plays that his brother is there running with him. Even though he is almost 2 years younger, he is so worried about his brother and keeps asking if he's sad or if he's all better now... it breaks my heart.

All these clips are leaving out the best part of the story. I saw an original documentary when the babies were adopted from China. It was quite a miracle what occurred. The mother went on the day her country was supposed to pick up the baby but the husband was sick and didn't go with her so they wouldn't release the baby. The next day she went with her husband on the day another country was coming to pick up their babies. The two women had happened to buy identical outfits to put on their new daughters. That's what caught the attention of the two mothers. The babies were dressed the same. Then they looked the same. They asked but we're told the girls were not twins. That's the most amazing part of the story to me.

"mirrored identical twins" is really interesting phenomenon.
It's caused by fertilized egg splitting in the last possible moments (before it would've started to develope as one single fetus) and that causes the splitted eggs' cell structures to be mirror image of each other
-- aka. One twin is left-handed, the other is right-handed and in some rare cases the left-handed twin has his/her heart and other concealed organs in opposite side than usually
(eg. heart in the right side of ribcase and so on).
Mirror-Image Identicals are rare thing, something like every 300th to 500th pair of identicals are "mirrored"
