  • House finds a tumour in his patient that's too big to operate on, bringing him to cleverly shrink its size so that his patient can be operable.

Season 1 Episode 6 "The Socratic Method"
A mother, Lucille Palmeiro, collapses after a blood clot travels from her leg to her heart. After arriving in the hospital, she begins to vomit blood, causing House to expect a Vitamin K deficiency. House's team discover unused Ampicillin and frozen microwave burgers, supporting House's diagnosis. An ultrasound of Lucille's liver reveals cirrhosis and a cancerous tumor. House treats the tumor with ethanol, but is unable to explain the cirrhosis. However, Lucille, in a decision House claims to be inconsistent with her schizophrenia, calls Social Services to take her son. House realizes that Wilson's disease explains the cirrhosis and an eye exam shows copper-colored rings around her irises. Lucille receives treatment, is healed, and reunites with her son.

I know the USA one is different in some regard but I don't know the differences. Anyway, no, they don't make a living off breaking up families. If anything, they go through extensive efforts to try and keep families together. I can't give specific details because of confidentiality but the amount of family files and phone calls I had to look through is quite crazy in order to keep children together with blood relatives. CS does get involved, but breaking up the family is usually a last resort unless it is more extreme case. Break ups DO happen, that is a duh statement, but the reason they are always seen that way is because those are more loud. For every break up there are dozens and dozens that are mended without it coming to that. I was actually a part of one that was fixed without the child having to be taken away. Media just has a REALLY bad habit of playing CS as the boogeymen or the baby snatchers. The Social Workers working there are people who are trying to help, it is just more often then not, they are completely overloaded with cases and burnt out.
