Miami Vice was a movie a week in its early years. Movie level production quality from, Miichael Mann, tight scripting, acting. The pan showing the shooter's donuts, coffee, how he was living - great attention to detail you don't see much now.

To help get potential cast members more into character, they were taken on stakeouts by the real Miami Vice unit. While auditioning for the role of Sonny Crockett, Don Johnson came into a script reading for the producers directly from an all night stakeout. He was tired, his hair was a mess, and he hadn't shaved that morning. That look showed the producers what a real life vice cop would look like following a long night of work, and he was hired immediately.

The first time, when they did the scene of his first shootout, it had to be redone because he was faster than the camera people could go. No, they hired him, and a couple episodes in, several factors (trouble in his personal affairs, complaints about the weather in Miami) led him to ask to leave the role.
It's too bad -- I really liked the character; that whole connection with Sonny was quite cool, but his departure definitely kickstarted the series as a whole.

There have been several comments made that the producers weren't thinking right to bump Greg sierra off the show. I just finished watching an interview where it was disclosed that it was sierra who wanted off the show.

Yes you could smoke in buildings, restaurants ,banks, on airplanes, etc. There were very few non-smoking places. There was even a smoking section in every public high school . the '80's were AWESOME.
