    Fun Fact: After his guest spot on Miami Vice, actor William Russ (Evan Freed) became a regular cast member on producer Michael Mann's tv series Crime Story (which was inspired by real-life police and FBI cases). This series featured a number of actors who had previously worked with Mann on Miami Vice.

In fact...honestly, the baddest and coolest hairstyle of everyone on the five seasons of Vice. Both in terms of main/recurring characters to one-time characters. That swoopy hair with that white blazer! Right on👍👍👍👍👍 Evan was one compelling dude, despite how unhinged and disturbed he was. William Russ was an excellent selection for the role.

    To me, the best episode of Miami Vice (and Out Where the Buses Don’t Run is my 2nd favorite).
    This was a great episode. It dealt w/guilt, regret, absolution, and homophobia.
    The homophobia was dealt with with dignity and compassion. The issue of someone coming out and how others react(ed) was ahead of its time; especially when AIDS was starting to run rampant through the gay community. In the 80’s the gay community was demonized and vilified. This episode tried to paint the picture that you were just as human being gay, as well as being straight.
    Gabriel’s “Rhythm of The Heat” was (to me) a good foreshadowing of Evan’s soul, especially the line in the song “The rhythm has my soul.”.
    And “Biko” was a perfect ending, when Evan commits suicide by walking into the bullet fire, as his way of atonement and release from his past.

    • @motoman2WH3
      @motoman2WH3 Před 3 lety +2

      Aside from the spoiler(!), you're spot on. And this lesson is lost, because the streaming services ban this episode. Begs the question, Which is worse? That Crockett uses a "politically incorrect" word in the context of this lesson? Or that banning this episode means the lesson goes unlearned?
      (Also, I'd put "Out Where the Buses..." at #1 and "Evan" #2. Both definitely the best episodes.)

    • @kevinbuja4373
      @kevinbuja4373 Před 3 lety +4

      @@motoman2WH3 I’ve heard this episode is banned from streaming services (but not the dvd) because of Gabriel and copyright infringement.
      And either way, whether “Evan” is 1 or 2, they are the strongest, most cohesive episodes. And, ending “Out Where the Buses Don’t Run” with “Brothers in Arms” (I still think to this day, that that track is the best on that album. Aside: I think Mark Knopfler is one the most underrated guitarists and one of the best story tellers, “Making Movies” attests to that) was perfect.

      @motoman2WH3 Před 3 lety +11

      @@fever_spike Yeah, Netflix banned this one too. And on cable, "faggot" was bleeped. This is insane, because this episode was one of the very first mainstream shows to deal with homophobia: Crockett only said "faggot" when explaining to Tubbs how wrong he & the department were back in the day. The lesson was powerful, and is completely lost when this sort of P.C. nonsense fails to take into consideration the context.

      I'm going to assume you did not see this in its initial network run. Back then, homophobia (and homosexuality in general) was a taboo subject on prime time TV, AIDS was just entering the public consciousness, and heroes (Crockett in this case) were not supposed to be on the "wrong" side of history. Most such shows that did air were preachy and P.C. This one, anything but. In the story, it almost cost Crockett & Tubbs their partnership, and did cost a former colleague's life.

      For me personally, the two factors that elevate this above other MV episodes are the intro and the story. I think the intro speaks for itself; the tensions builds splendidly, the shots of Crockett and Tubbs on the roof + of the mannequins are awesome, and the way the action goes down is sweet too. As for the story, it's got solid crime plot mixed with real emotional stakes for both Crockett and Tubbs. The sensitive handling of homosexuality for a show at the time is also cool, but ultimately the cherry on top.
