Belated means that something is said or done later than it should have, i.e. a belated birthday greeting or a belated apology, etc. But regarding your comment, I think there's a lot we don't know and that it's very possible they do exist. I, myself, have always believed Mermaids exist because history has taught us that Legends and myths come from somewhere. Sailors early on, have reported seeing mermaids in the oceans.

Look, my whole family were fishermen in Puerto Rico. These creatures are real and very smart, and they travel with wild dolphins and the gray ones. They can be found in the summer when the moon is full at hard-to-get-to beaches. They are from 6 to 7 feet and are really fast, they do not have long hair, they have a small fin, and they are not beautiful or ugly their skin is like a rubbery dark blue-grayish to light skin with big dark eyes, but not like Aliens eyes or evil-looking. Webbed hands, skinny, and they are more afraid of us than we are of them. See the govt has known them and captured them, and like many other living things they do not want us to know about them because it will change history by the stories we would then hear from them. Yes, I have seen them at a distance of 50 feet and every time we tried to get any closer they would jump back in so fast and be gone for months and years at a time, Ho they have sharp shark teeth with blueish lips and a dark mouth.

The one that claims it was filmed during the COVID19 shut down is from way before then. I had seen that footage more than 10 years ago. Also, how many fish have hair? none. Why? something that lives in constant saltwater and motion through the water isn't going to have hair like what you'd think.
Some of those were obviously fake, but the two on the rocks of the river bank in Canada would have been very difficult to fake. The body shape was human-like but very skinny, and the way the closest one to the camera flips itself over the rocks, to the water, would have put some serious bruises on a person.
The footage of mermaid in surf riding the waves got me thinking that one real.
