    About this video:
    In this video Axel Beats, creator of the One Piece: The Modern Odyssey (A Literary Analysis Video Essay) does a chapter walkthrough of the Kimetsu No Yaiba (Japanese) or Demon Slayer (English Dub) manga and anime series. AxelBeats retrospectively reviews the manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge, which was later published by Viz Media in English and adapted into a popular anime by Ufotable and Crunchyroll. The story takes place in Taishō era Japan, where a secret society, known as the Demon Slayer Corps, has been waging a secret war against demons for centuries. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted and intelligent boy living with his family in the mountains. However, everything changes when he comes home one day to discover his family was attacked and slaughtered by demons. Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko were the sole survivors and Nezuko is transformed into a demon. After an encounter with Giyū Tomioka, the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro is recruited and trains under Sakonji Urokodaki to become a Demon Slayer. In this video, Axel explores the arcs Final Selection Arc (Adapated into Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Season 1), Kidnapper's Bog, Asakusa, Tsuzumi Mansion, Mt. Natagumo, Rehabilitation, Mugen Train (Adapated into a movie), the Entertainment District Arc (Adapated into Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Season 2), the Swordsmith Village Arc (adapted into Demon Slayer Season 3). No stone is left unturned as we explore all of the lore, theories, and analysis of Kimetsu No Yaiba: Demon Slayer in this high definition historical retrospective and video essay. Whether you watch Demon Slayer sub or dub, you’ll find something to love!

    I know I'm in the minority, but I've always loved the final fight. I've seen a lot of hard-won final battles, but the sheer sustained effort it takes to kill Muzan was very fun to read. It really feels like an unending slog in the best way. And every slayer is so consumed by united spite that it really feels like the full weight of fate and karma is baring down on Muzan, even if he spends most of the fight winning. Tamayo is the key to this, as her words to Muzan are so cold and snarky that it shows through her just how much everyone hates and reviles this man and his actions. He goes out as a big baby getting kicked to death by everyone he traumatized and that just hits different for me.

    Tamayo did mention it in season 3 about nezuko remaining in a child like state, my theory is having a child like mind wouldn't express the idea of killing and feeding on others more of innocence, being meek, less dangerous more controllable, and that was contrasted when she transformed into her original form in season 2 as an adult who would purpossfulyl do evil things, shows lack of control as an adult, her innocence faded and her intelligence increased, so that she knew that she needed to feed. Gonna be honest I think Tanjiro isn’t as plain as everyone makes him out to be, yes, he is kind but he is also shown to genuinely hate people, yet still pities them. In a world so cruel, watching someone who goes through so much shit yet remains so kind. In a world full of hate and death, he stays himself - cares and loves no matter what. He doesn’t see people in black and white, he understands the greys of people. He understands no one is pure good or pure evil. Even Muzan.
    Regardless of his sympathy and kindness, he’s still stubborn, brash, doesn’t think things through. Can struggle with his own emotions, loves far too much. And, gets angry. A lot. Tanjiro is willing to understand and sympathise with everyone, doesn’t give up on people. Is constantly parallel to the two uppermoon siblings, a path he and his sister could have gone through.
    He’s so interesting to me and still my favourite character.

    About the muzan actually conquering the sun, i think it would just be more difficult to believe he could even be defeated. His ONLY weakness was the sun. The blades at this point werent doing anything even after he was nerfed to the ground. The spider lily being so specific to be found during the daytime was just there to say he could never actually conquer that weakness of the sun. Also personally i like that he was so strong that they needed literally everything the slayers got to defeat him. Everything with the every living hashira at that point having the mark and also using the red blade, and that drug that even allowed them to actually have a wining chance. He was a demon for 1000+ year's, any lesser showing of his power would just be underwhelming to me

  • @johnlindsay7301
    @johnlindsay7301 Před 10 měsíci +10

    One sign of Demon Slayer’s brilliance is that it doesn’t need the 3 episode rule. What makes Demon Slayer so good and so accessible is the writing. Just watch how quickly you feel for these characters in the first chapter. Stories don’t have to be complex to be excellent. Many great writers have taken simple plots and made them into masterpieces thru brilliant execution of writing and storytelling. And in the anime medium Demon Slayer executes it’s storytelling and writing in an as well as any competitor. I think of Tanjiro’s visit to the village. As he leaves home he talks about how happy his family is. And that when times of happiness end, it’s almost always in blood. Some pretty blunt foreshadowing. But after he leaves for home he is stopped by a man who lives at the outskirts of town. He tells Tanjiro to stay with him for the night because that’s when the demon’s come out. More foreshadowing. So we’re not surprised when Tanjiro gets home to see his family slaughtered. But we are surprised to see his sister turned into a demon. And we’re even more surprised when she protects him from the demon slayer. His kindness, his love for her, in spite of her turn, has turned her into a demon with compassion. His love created her love. And her love ended up saving her. I would call this brilliant and even complex. And it’s enough to hook any viewer at episode 1. So yeah it doesn’t need the 3 episode rule, because if you aren’t yearning to see more by episode 1 you must be dead inside. Or at least pretty cinical.

As a massive demon slayer fan I can agree it’s not some kind of new masterpiece but it’s a story that honed its blade to the upmost sharpness. Exactly. People always criticize it for being simple, but that isn’t a *bad* thing. In fact, the simplicity benefits it, because more “average” and casual anime watchers and people outside the anime circle would be able to follow and understand it more. It does it’s story very well. The only major gripe I have with the story is the basic and bland MC. I REALLY dislike Tanjiro, but the side characters make up for it by a long shot, the Hashira are my favorite of the entire “powerful top ranked good guy group” troupes in shonen (i.e the Kages in Naruto and the Gotei 13 from Bleach, I haven’t watched Bleach yet so that might not be it lol)

    3:45:45 I do get why people get a bit uncomfortable with Nezuko's change but it's not really an unrealistic change.
    First, Nezuko isn't an actual toddler, she is actually 14(12 when turned).
    Nezuko doesn't just shrink herself she changes age to match the size(maybe it somehow saves energy or is mentally easier on her).
    It stands to reason that when making herself bigger she may also age herself as it could not only give her the power boost but also a mental boost.
    As for her... endowments in her older form. Her clothes don't change with her.
    While most of those clothes are made to grow with the kid a bit and only drag a bit in her little form, a grown woman can't wear the clothes of a child without some wardrobe malfunctions!
    Edit to say: I typed that before your views were said and we agree alot but I'm still leaving it because my point on the clothes is still valid.

    Like, empathetic characters and themes aren’t boring. In fact I think it’s infinitely more interesting to choose empathy and kindness and love over revenge, because I’ve found revenge is the easy option, and that is one thing that will forever make me love this series. That it’s characters aren’t not afraid to chose kindness even when it’s hard but also that kindness and empathy aren’t always the right choice in any given situation.

    just one thing: Tanjiro is DEFINITELY a chosen one. it's not from a prophecy or something, but a chosen one. his family has the strongest breathing that he learns by... nothing, he just knows - or because his father danced when he was a child -, he has the mark superpower, and they didn't kill a moon whatever for 100 years until he appeared, his sister is the special demon who can walk on the sun and live by sleeping, not eating humans... he has all the strongest characteristics of the universe without do nothing to earn or deserve it. you know, A CHOSEN ONE.

    • @AxelBeats
      @AxelBeats  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I disagree with this for the most part. I wouldn't say his father or grandfather were chosen ones based on them knowing the breathing style - and of the known users, tanjiro is the worst at it; with his body being unsuited for the form even if he CAN technically use it.
      He has the mark, but he wasn't born with it - unlike his father who was.
      They didn't kill a moon until he appeared, however HE only kills one of of them. Rui is killed by Giyu, Akaza Takes his own life, and even Muzan is just burnt out. The only one tanjiro actually takes out is hantengu, and that's only after HUGE help from Genya, Nezuko, and Mitsuri. He basically got the last hit in, but it wasn't like he was the be-all-end-all in the fight.
      Even if killing a moon DID mark him as a chosen one, does that make Zenitsu, Giyu, Inosuke, etc chosen ones? I'd agree with the idea of a chosen generation, but not a chosen "one".
      His sister being special doesn't really reflect on him? I wouldn't say kokushibo was a chosen one because yoriichi was. Nor would i say he has the strongest characteristics. He isn't the fastest by a long shot, he isn't the strongest - gyomei is, he isn't the most talented - muichiro is -. He's just above average at everything and a master of nothing.
      The only chosen character in the series is Yoriichi, everyone else is just varying levels of lucky and talented.

    • @PROPAROXITONO
      @PROPAROXITONO Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@AxelBeats I don't disagree with you, we are just talking about slightly different things. you are talking about the chosen one inside the story, I'm saying "chosen one" as the trope, how the story of that world is affected by a guy that just born that way (not saying he did nothing, but some power-ups appeared from nowhere at very convenient timing).
      like you said, other characters have some of the same characteristics, but he is the only one that has ALL the characteristics.
      imagine the same story of Demon Slayer but with a prophecy saying that the game will turn against the demons when a boy with a mark on his face that takes care of a benevolent demon appears... almost anything else in the story would have to change to Tanjiro be the chosen one.

    I think the emphasis on Demon Slayer’s other characters is part of what makes it such an amazing anime and manga. It’s not afraid to let it’s side characters outshine the main cast at times and it lets all the characters have their moments, giving every single one of them time to be in the spotlight.

      Yeah, and I think that is a totally fine approach for a shonen story. Yes, I like HxH precisely because it is not like that at all, but I don't think it's wrong to make your main character...the main character. But Demon Slayer is, especially for shonen who often have large casts and tons of characters, one of the worst when it comes to side characters.
      Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Black Clover, even Fairy Tail do this much better, for example. And I am not saying these are better shows, but still. wtf.

    Massive respect to you, Axel, for this video. The amount of effort you put into these is evident and should be a guide to others who wish to do similar videos.
    I agree with you on all points of this video except one, which was really just an opinion, but I think Tanjiro is an interesting character. He’s this sort of unassuming, not special “chosen one” who doesn’t have any special skills, talents or power from birth or whatnot; what makes him interesting is that he struggles to become who is and maintains a kindness and gentleness despite everything.

    • @tompsonhsu
      @tompsonhsu Před rokem +7

      He literally is a special "chosen one". He has this supreme breathing style that was passed down by his family, the first in literal centuries. He and his family are these descendents who manage to perfectly be demons that are immune to sun, the first in literal centuries. He has a slayer mark that makes him super powerful, the first in literal centuries, and empowers his allies just by proximity, the first in literal centuries. He is the first in centuries to encounter Muzan and be targeted, simply because of his earrings which represent essentially a prophesied "chosen one" gift from the strongest person ever in the past. Ever since he shows up, he is integral to defeating members of the Twelve Moons for the first time in centuries.
      Literally none of the plot has anything to do with his character or his struggle. If Tanjiro was really rude and mean-spirited, the plot could operate exactly the same. His special skills and talents from birth are this weird thing where he can smell demons perfectly, and the breathing style that is innate to him from his father who watched Yoriichi and this genetic mutation that allows his family to be sunproof demons.
      There's literally no argument that you can say for Tanjiro "oh he struggled to work with Sun Breathing, it took a big toll on his body" that isn't reflected in Naruto's struggle with Kurama, or Deku's struggle with his power's toll on his body, or Ichigo's inner world struggle with his Hollow version. If you think those characters are chosen ones, then so is Tanjiro. If you don't think Tanjiro is a chosen one, then none of them are either.
      Throughout the story, if you replace every instance of "the slayer with the Hanafunda Earrings" with "The Chosen One", you get literally a prophecy story beat for beat.

    I love these long form content and you did such an amazing job of breaking down the story. The only thing I'd like to add is Muzan is made as a simple villain to compliment the simple story. He's done all those, what we think is intrinsically dumb decisions, is an example of his ego. He doesn't do it himself because he believes he's above doing the dirty work that his underlings could do as he's busy with what's actually important. But time and time again its proven that his biggest enemy was always himself. He was the one that made him weak to the sun is because he made the decision to kill the doctor.
    He also killed the other person who knew where the blue spider lily was. In a Sengoku secret comic panel, Tanjirou hints that his mother once showed him a place with beautiful blue flowers. So, lol not only did he not kill Tanjirou because he didn't think humans were worth it, he killed the doctor who could've saved him and massacred the family that knew where it was. He's epitome of narcissism blinding you to the answers to your journey.

I like the character analysis and the references to the actual japanese folklore of some of the characters, I didn't know they were allegories for stuff in the manga and thats sick to me. I definitely agree with you on the muzan fight. The fight imo was good and I didnt have a problem with the baby thing, but the plotholes of muzan never just killing everyone himself always put me off a little. I def think a kars situation from jojos p2 would have suited it much better, where finding the blue spider lily would have given him those ridiculous powers. I also wish that the spin off of the characters in the future would have gone on a bit longer, I always struggle to let series go, and that for me would have been a much more satisfying end. Thanks for making this video, cool beans.

    Just thought that I should mention that despite Koyoharu Gotoge's pen name and anonymity, it was actually confirmed by Shounen Jump that the author is a woman (which makes sense as the manga industry is famously difficult for female artists and they often use pen names)! You refer to them as "him" at the beginning of your video, but I think it's important to acknowledge that they made massive and incredible achievements in an industry - and genre (shounen) - that is famously unfriendly and difficult for female authors and characters.

      It was not confirmed by shonen jump that Gotouge is a woman. This is a misconception stemming from a 2019 panel at Madfest 2019 in Australia; in which translators mistakenly translated "kanojo" as "she" in one section despite the rest of the panel using gender neutral language - just as i mistakenly said "him" or any of the dozens of other grammatical slip ups in the video.
      That said, i think it's important to acknowledge that if the mangaka wants to remain anonymous it isn't my place, nor is it your place, to reveal their gender to the world. Allow them their privacy.

    In Japanese cultural iconography, crashing waves symbolise relentless tenacity, and what Finns might call sisu. I thought that was a neat detail in Tanjiro's first major clothing change.

    Thank you for this amazing analysis. It's clear that a massive amount of effort went into this. Excellent work!
    This story has given me so much peace of mind surrounding death. I will live forever through the love I have shared with others. There is nothing to fear. My ancestors believe in me and I believe in those who will come after us.
