    Probably the most epic single piece of footage on motor sport.
    Ari Vatanen redefined the word "commitment" in rallying. When he first came to Australia to compete, he was introduced to Colin Bond, who at the time was one of our top rally drivers. He asked Colin how many times he had rolled a car, Bond proudly replied "never."
    "Hmm," said Ari, "then how do you know where the limit is?"

      Relaxed Driving, not a Care in the World !
      Group B, featuring the most amazing vehicles, came to an end after 3 major accidents.
      In the Portugal Rally, a car plowed into the spectators.
      Then, during the Corsica Rally, a Lancia Stratos trying to avoid a person, went of a clif killing both pilots.
      There was another major accident, leading to a Pilots" strike.
      Basically, the vehicles were far to powerful and fast, even for pilots of that calibre.
      Thank you for a crisp, intelligent comment.

    • @cr10001
      @cr10001 Před 11 měsíci +1

      I saw Vatanen in an Escort in the 1977 Rally of New Zealand. We went to spectate in Maramarua Forest, we sat opposite a turnoff into a side road from a hundred-yard straight. Well Vatanen came round the bend into the straight flat out and never lifted off, just put the car broadside half-way down the straight and swept through the right-angle corner sideways... everyone else after that was an anticlimax. And yes I've had Escorts sideways many times - there's a 'little bit sideways' and then there's Vatanen.
      (And the sound of a (non-turbocharged) Escort echoing through the trees was always magical).

    I remember watching that for the first time in the early 90s… it was amazing! Incidentally, the record run was the 1988 run, but that car also competed the next year with Robby Unser driving, and I believe that some of the film footage may have been from the 1989 run. That car, and Ari, also won the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1989 and 1990. In true Group B style it was an absolute monster with about 660hp and weighing just over 900kg.

    Livining are the base of Pikes Peak since 1956 at age 9, my family attended most every year. In the 70s & 80s, I raced motorcycles 7x with a class win, & 2 podiums. In the 80s, I was drafted to race an IROCZ Camaro in the Stock Car class, running exactly 1/2 -- 13th out of 26 cars in my rookie car race. (In a low-budget production based chassis car against high-$ tube-framed monsters. I retired when they paved it. PPAHC is a unique iconic legend in the motorsports world, alongside Indy, Lemans, Paris-Dakar... high point of my life. This is the best by far footage capturing the essence of the Climb To The Clouds from the driver's perspective. Not for the faint of heart and magically stirring for the spectators. I am not saying the other car class drivers can't drive, just that they have different skill sets, and rally drivers frighten the crap out of me. In Australia, we sometimes call motor cycle riders TAs (Tee Ays), or Temporary Australians. I think we can apply the same title to Rally Car drivers.

    People forget that this is 3 years after almost died in Argentina and after spending 18 months recovering from severe injuries to his body and torso and then severe depression (his seat broke from it's couplings and he was thrown around inside the car after it somersaulted at 120mph) and then to come back to rallying shows the balls of the man in my opinion one of the goats great driver Ari Vatanen.

  • @MichaelBrown-ds5ll
    @MichaelBrown-ds5ll Před rokem

    Ari Vatanen mentions on his website that he had to slip the clutch in order to control the tire slippage and power delivery to the ground, when you have over 900 hp (at the start) trying to go to the ground. The car would lose power and only made a bit over 700hp at the peak. His record up the mountain stood for ~10 years. When it was finally broken it was done in perfect conditions on dirt that had been treated to make it almost like pavement. This video was made the year after his record setting run which was done in conditions that included mud, snow and sleet as he went up the mountain. the engine was built to only last 15 minutes - enough for qualifying and one run up the mountain. You see Vatanen clip the mountain which messed up one wheel. He finished with three wheel drive. In the post race interview he laughed about it saying that the "lion" in him didn't want to lift even though he probably should have. The final scene in the movie is Robby Unser crossing the line. As I said, this movie is done the year after Vatanen set the record, Peugeot had returned to reset the record. There is no other video like it cause the road changed. Yes more people have gone faster but based on the day, the conditions and the road...no one ever went faster than Ari Vatanen.

    There's a similar video of Sebastian Loeb doing the run in 2013 in a 208 T16 Pug. Over 2 minutes quicker, but w-a-y more boring. Muted engine, semi-auto gear box, sealed road. Pfft!
    Ari at full noise, h-pattern stick-shit, 100mph into a hair-pin bend with one hand shielding the sun so he can see his braking point before the 1000ft drop 😳: Sir, I'm holding your beer!

    •  Před 2 lety +7

      Loeb also drove on asphalt. I hate they paved it.

    • @flo__60
      @flo__60 Před 2 lety +4

      it's a different race now period, i'm pretty sure Loeb would rather race it without the pavement as well but what's done is done i guess

      @@yardmeat7499 Yeah no one is taking anything away from Loeb, he is/was the best rally driver, no point arguing against all the wins (well I guess Ogier could top it), but the pure craziness of these 80s drivers is mesmerizing.

    when i was a teen, i i got an autograph from vatanen in Mali during the paris-dakar, the very same day when he got his race car stolen, he still took same to sign for a bunch of highscool students despite what happened to his race car. that was kind.

    Seeing as you've been loving the rally lately, I was curious if you're familiar with Group B. It was banned due to being far too dangerous, and was later reformed into today's WRC. Group B cars had way more power than even the fastest of the modern WRC cars, and they were racing back in the 80's.
    My favourite Group B car is also one of my favourite sounding cars of all time; the Audi Quattro S1. Give it a listen if you want an eargasm.

    Abd next Ouninpohja Incar.

      Peter Brock would be the first legend that springs to mind.
      Possum Bourne was a excellent rally driver too but he was killed in a non race incident on a public road in the rain I believe.
      Colin McRae also died in a non race incident. He was killed in a helicopter crash on my birthday, but the King of the mountain Peter Brock’s death the year earlier and a few days before my birthday will forever be the saddest day in my Motorsport memory.
