Rejected Cars of The Fast & Furious

- While there's always been controversy about which cars were chosen for the first movie, most people don't know what cars were summarily rejected.
Would the movie have been better with other cars? Or were the cars we chose the very best choices. - Zábava
An E36 would've been perfect for Jesse
They did use a terribly done E36 in the second movie.
Agreed
I mean at least a vr6t ... but a 2.0 authomatic.. common...
Nah, they wouldn't cheap anymore. Keep the price low. I really love these cars.
@@wingedstring VR6T was not common back in those days lol.
It really sucks how fnf have basically abandoned the car culture now the first three movies will always be my favorites not to say the others are bad but they don't have the same magic of the first three

I’ve always thought the 3000GT was underrated . It would’ve been insanely popular if it made the film
I always wondered why they didn't use 3000Gt VR4. Such a beautiful car.. still looks awesome today just the interior looks really outdated.
Yeah they only used one in the short film which explains how Paul Walkers character ends up in miami. Amazing looking machine.
It was used 2fast 2 furious hell it beat a Ferrari
Beautiful cars, its like the poor mans ferrari but they will nickel and dime you until you're broke lol.
My 3000gt was always the car everyone loved to come check out at car meets and the street races. It was slammed with foose 18" rims and a VIS bodykit, a huge wing and the most epic sounding exhaust system. God i miss that car!
The bigger budget is needed to accompany the planes, submarines, tanks and flying cars. 😂
Well, to be fair those were in the later movies. Bigger budgets with each movie kinda deal.

The maxima doesn’t sit right for me either
@@xkimopye The maxima styling was meh, but you're sleeping on Maximas a bit. Remember they have the same 3.0 v6 in them that the 300zx does. It's NA but its still pushes around 170-180 or so to the wheels, their relatively light as well, actually lighter than the 300zx, very predictable to toss around, and with the rev limiter disabled they just keep pulling. The biggest downside, finding one with a 5 speed is nearly impossible.
@@NightsN2dr3ams I had a 97' 5 speed maxima as my first car, absolute beast with all bolt-ons and only 3000lbs, it was the VG30 engine with 190hp and 205tq. The 2000up maxima had that 222hp engine but was heavier.
true, and it would make the race against the s2k be way more of a nailbiter!
@@NightsN2dr3ams thanks for the correction, yea it was the same motor as the 300zx not the 3000gt.
this mans intro killed me “if you don’t know who i am, you’re not alone” 😂😂
Neat to see this process. I always wondered how this happened for the first movie as I had a tuner shop on the east coast in Atlanta, Ga at the time of the first movie and we were modifying those American cars you made fun of. East coast customizing was completely different from west coast. People were already starting to get tired of all the honda civic drivers running around with an intake and generic high flo muffler (or just cut off completely) trying to race everyone, myself included. I even built a 4 door sedan with a solid 400 hp back then and started putting honda logos on the door like WW2 fighter plane kills whenever I beat a civic on the street. Interestingly enough THE car to have back then was the 3000GT because of the all wheel drive. Tons of fox body mustangs and mini trucks too. Civic vs Mustang was HUGE competition and then the GTs vs the Type Rs started coming out. The funny part was the ford fiestas and festivas and even the Geo metro cars were the fastest on the road. One guy put a 500 hp corvette motor into his Geo Metro. Literally redefined power to weight ratio and no one could beat him at the drag strip.
As much as it would have been so cool to see my E46 M3 in the first movie, I got my car in 2013 and undoubtedly prices would be well on their way up by then. Cool to continue learning the history of the best part of the franchise, thanks for still making more videos!
This contributes to why the first movie is one of the best. The budget limitations kept things raw and to the street. People could actually connect with them realistically. Now the overblown budgets just bring to the screen a heap of unrealistic, unrelatable eye-sores.
9 was a joke way too fake and far fetched to be taken seriously.
Agreed. Fuck this franchise
We don't want flip cars we want to see our car or our favorite cars represented.
Agreed
IMO it went downhill quickly after Tokyo Drift
It's just amazing how the first few movies made with considerably less budget is still more enjoyable than the recent ones. Truck hijacking with Civics is suddenly isn't so over-the-top anymore.
And that "Cars in newer movies are lucky to survive even one scene in the latest movies" statement is painfully true. You see Dom with a Charger, and you already now that poor car will be destroyed some way or another. It's just not right imo.
Yea they are straight up not the characters cars anymore. Just a means to an end. And to the detriment of the franchise. Too much focus on bank heists and action. Not enough on what made the first one such an iconic movie.
@@az_3kgt714 I feel with you, the cars should be an extension of the character. An what truly makes a car guy? it's a guy that cares about his car and if he really loved that car he wouldn't be swapping it out multiple times.

@@melancholypuppy3595 the s2000 has seen a massive increase in price. 3 years ago you could buy one for around 10k were as now they are fetching from 20k to 25k depending on year and milage. Even now sure a good DC2 type r integra could cost you 15k
If Tran drove a Mustang, Jesse’s confidence would have been even funnier. At least with the S2000, when it was new and the movie was made, tuning companies were having a really hard time with it. Most aftermarket parts made it slower. So you could make the argument that as long as the Jetta could run faster than the 14.1 a stock S2000 could do, he knew he would probably win.

I liked that he said that specific word, because for the time period the first movie came out, that 100% made sense. "Rice" wasn't a bad word back then....it was what graced every magazine on the shelf. The bigger the bumper and wings, the better!
I grew up in So Cal during the late 90s and saw first hand the street racing scene and the import scene you described. You hit the nail on the head with describing what cars were hot and people were driving.
Always wanted to see an Aussie Holden in the films, now I know why. No Australian characters. Still by 2005 they could've used a Pontiac GTO (a rebadged LHD aussie built Holden Monaro) Another awesome video Craig!
The smallest budgets force the crew to use the most amount of creativity and imagination, often producing brilliant results!
Great explanation!
Except...the failure to mention that Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that he just came into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS, and a Motec system exhaust.
Those Motec systems exhausts are some badddd boyyyysss lol instantly adds 100hp per liter and flows so well that you have to run forged pistons and rods because 11k is where your revving to once your running one.

The one thing that I always thought would add to the movie was a domestic versus import rivalry at race wars. The 2001 Z06 had just come out in the year 2000. Mustangs were also hot for drag racing. Not make them a large part of the movie but even a cameo scene touching on what was at the time a really hot topic. Our local race tracks had domestic versus import night frequently
They could make a spin-off and get this franchise back online by having dom's Rx 7 being found or even do something with any of the old og cars

The BWM in F&F2 with the Streetglow sticker, was part of The Jade Crew formed by one of my friends Ben Duen. I don't talk to him anymore, but his crew and his cars were awesome. I loved Ben's MR2 and wish I had the money to own one like his.
I’m happy the cars that made it into the movie did so. Here in the UK we didn’t get the Nissan Maxima, and the Volkswagen Jetta was called a Vento, but nobody really bought them. So it was good to see some original cars in the mix rather than the usual suspects.
What I find funny is the Jesse character for Midnight Club 2 was called Steven. He was super technical and talked about boost and fuel curves constantly and his character in the game drives the unlicensed version of an Audi 4 door called an Emu.
A 300zx would have been cool in F&F1. Could've replaced your Maxima or been made tech heavy for Jesse.

I have always have the same thoughts about how the cars were not abused/purposely crashed by the owners/drivers in the script in the first movie make them seem a lot more special and relatable. It also made the moments when the Eclipse and Charger get wrecked a lot more powerful. Civics wasn't as much as they was 3 on screen and were the characters main car.
Craig's pretty much perfect with the impressions of the reject cars like the Hyundai, Kia, Miata etc. My Friends and I thought pretty much the exact same thing. I hated Hyundai even more back then (and still kinda do, although theyve come a long way) because I always thought they intentionally made their name close to Honda.
I still don’t like them. Hyundai’s and Kia’s are always bought by people who don’t care about cars. They drive them that way too

@@ParvTV Friends have them and I also hired an Elantra a few years ago for a week. I stand by my comment.
Good point at the end. The first 3, possibly 4 movies, the cars were like characters with their own story arch. Brian’s eclipse gets destroyed halfway through, the Supra gets built and is used for the rest of the film. The Camaro and Challenger in the second movie, you know where those cars came from and what happened to them. In the new movies they’re like props. Dom shows up in a GTX with no explanation of where it comes from, one scene, it’s wrecked and then gone never to be spoken about again, they’re forgettable, almost like how the movies have become.
It's sad how many rare cars get destroyed for these movies...

I always thought the Skyline was more Vince's style. Even when I saw the movie in theaters the Maxima didn't look like something Vince would.
The 1997-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP would have fit in well. At the time they were pretty fast, lots of parts available. The supercharged 3800 (L67) was a damn near bullet proof engine. (If you replace the valve cover gaskets and convert to aluminum coolant elbows)
I read somewhere that the original Fast and Furious was supposed to have a Dodge Neon RT, but it was voted not cool enough or believable that it was Fast. Even tho they actually were pretty fast, especially with a bigger turbo than stock!

I always thought Vince should have had the R33 Skyline as he was a more dominant character compared to Leon who quiet frankly I barely even remember in the movie.

Leon's skyline was right hand drive, but if you chose any other car, the Toyota Celica that you mentioned would've been a great pick. I can see him driving a tuned red one
I have to say - I’m pretty lucky to be owning a 300ZX but the only example I have ever saw in the FNF films was a sticker of the stillen Le Mans 300ZX in Brian’s room... Craig, if I do remember - the fnf was inspired by street racing that particularly had a black 300zx as one of the main vehicles mentioned. Any reason why it was not even used as an extra vehicle in ANY of the films?
Some interesting cars here that I am both glad for some and gutted for others that didn't make the final films.
Quick question, dont know if you'll see this.
I'd imagine some cars were far easier to mod than others. Was there any particular brands or models that you just thought were real pain in the ass to mod for the films and for what Universal were looking for?
"They weren't rice out enough to get us excited" 😂😂 and I am genuinely surprised there were no 4th gen firebirds and camaros ngl.
Mustangs would've made more sense just because they're bigger in the tuner culture.
@Peter Angles When I say turner culture I mean the movement that started in the ‘90s with Japanese imports that people were modding both performance and body wise, not just having engine mods available in general. Mustangs were more widely used for an American go to during that time, and a large part of that was just because they were more popular cars overall, so there was a lot more companies catering that support specifically in body modifications (there were also a ton of riced out Mustangs to come out of that era because of it). Not to mention all the aftermarket companies building Mustangs like Roush, Steeda and Saleen during that time as well. That’s why it was initially planned to be Tran’s car.
cuz the whole point of the first movie was to showcase the japanese import tuner scene. that’s specifically WHY you didn’t see any firebirds, camaros or mustangs. dom’s charger being the only exception
Graduated in 2002 and my high school parking lot was packed with Berettas and fox body mustangs. Those 2 definitely out numbered everything else. Followed by sunfires and Grand Prix / am. Finally Ford tempos lol.
*No right-hand drive cars.*
*What about Leon's R33?*
I'm assuming that they let that one in because it didn't have a big role in the movie, no stunts or much screen time at all to speak of. RIP Big Bird.
Not the most accessible car for the average boys perhaps?
@ReboyGTR
It was just like Vince's car, not much screen time and they didn't have to make multiple copies of it.
The S2k, the Eclipse, the Integra, the EG Civic, and even Hector's Accord wagon were all included in the first movie...I realize that you know this, I'm just saying.
I saw the gold supra from To Fast To Furious on a back lot at Universal covered in dust with pallets leaning against it back in 2013.
Great vid craig. I died and screamed a little 7:20 at miatas
Oh, and no, no Hyundais or Kias back in 2000. I worked at a Chevy dealership that sold Kias as well back then and the only car they had was the Sephia and they were ALL bare bones. They didn't even have a radio. They were cheap turds...econoboxes. Hyundai all had Mitsubishi engines at the time, and none of them were turbo here in the US.
So did you guys get the scoupe turbo ?
It was not fast by any means but apparently it was there first entry in sporty car segment
Honestly, a riced out Hyundai would’ve fit Brian instead of the eclipse, because he kept getting teased and laughed at for being a granny-shifter with giant NOS tanks.
New intro is awesome!
good move on the Hyundai absence. Looking back I always thought the Tiburon was "forced" into the 2000s tuning scene via Need For Speed Underground and such.
Looking into auto cross this would be a good way to pick what type of car I would like to get anybody recommended anything for around a 6k Budget
