- Victor Matfield was a rugby genius. He had a phenomenal skill set for a big man and dominated the set pieces, specifically at line out time and at kick offs. As this video shows, he could also run like a center and score some great tries.

The greatest technical lock of the modern era. I still remember watching the Tri-Nations I think it was 2009 or 2010 where you could literally see VM work out the All Blacks' line out calls in the game. Name a other technical lock to compare - there is NO OTHER MAN DEAD OR ALIVE better than Matfield

Who like Eben Etzebeth? Eben is incredibly gifted and at 28 / 29 has a world cup medal, will definitely go down as also one of the best lock we have ever produced. Don't forget Mostert, De Jager and RG. I think you should lay off the pipe, we have enough super Locks and even moreso today.
People whoha about retallick, but matfield and bakkies set the standard wrt mobility. They were way ahead of their times and athletic freaks. Once in a generation atheletes
With the greatest respect to Nathan Sharpe, Martin Johnson, Sam Whitelock (especially Whitelock) - Victor is on a different level. I would select him first before any player for test rugby

Miss the days of Matfield and bakkies botha. Way better that pieters steph and eben. Dont get me wrong en is a good player but boks did better with bakkies and Matfield. Matfield Is a LEGEND. I miss seing Matfield and John smits leadership.
