There is lots of old knowledge lost in time. I believe the sun is key.
La or Ra as we pronounce la coz we lazy like that lol sun worship was prevalent in ancient times. Traced back to Egypt.
I also believe in our folklore holds a few clues as to who we are and where we came from. Tagaloa or Tangaroa was our god in ancient times. The only family that I know, that traces back to tagaloa is Tui Manu'a, and the descendants of this great king came children of moa. Or Sa Moa, descendants of Moa. Like Sa Malietoa, Decendants of Malietoa.
When the missionaries arrived, a lot was lost due to missionary intervention. They abolished a lot of our customs and practices. Like the tattoo or pe'a for example. All men was to receive it. But the missionaries abolished it via interfering with our politics and way of life. The chiefs at the time didn't want this so they compromised and said only chiefs and sons of chiefs can get the pe'a.
Pulemelei could very well be of Tongan influence. Or it could be ancient polynesian people. Before they were recognized as samoa. Keep in mind, Tui Manu'a was first then Moa followed, then decendants of Moa. The first king of Tonga was a descendant of Tui Manu'a, which explains why Tonga was able to rule samoa. Samoa was not conquered, it was given to Tui Tonga.

I guess, the famous Pulemelei Pyramid is an ancient religious place. But the true knowledge is completely lost because of the disease after WW I., when all the matai's and people of villages nearby died, who did know about. As much as I remember at the moment, the great author Dr. Augustin Kraemer "Die Samoainseln" (The Islands of Samoa) [he stayed 1897 to '98 at all the islands of Samoa] did not mentioned the Pulemelei. Astonishingly he found out so much about the culture of Samoa, but nothing about the Pulemelei. I think, the matai's kept all about secret. Why ? Because it was probably "The Ancient Religious Place" on Savai'i. Though, after John Williams arrived there, all about the ancient religion became strictly forbidden. When I've been at the Pulemelei the first time (1994), the whole place was covered all over with plants, one hardly could make out the Pyramid. Fortunately the last time (2008), to my big surprise, the wonderful place was cleaned up. I stayed on the platform for quite some time and I got a certain feeling there, what I will never forget all my life. Awe Pulemelei !

What I think is funny is why is it that Hawai'i is even brought up? As a native Hawaiian I find it sad that we Islanders feel the need to compare and compete with each other. Of course this Wahi Tapu place would be larger than the Heiau we have here in Hawai'i, because Samoa is the origin of our religious practices, and many of our royal bloodlines. Samoa don't lower yourself to compare and compete with others! Take your rightful place as the Central Clan and mother of Kings!

"PULE- MELE'I" There is no such word in our Samoan language, such as "pulemele'i", that is why there is so much confusion over this issue. But with the arrival of the non polynesians to Samoa. The native (Samoans) heard them talking about the word PIRA-MID and I believe that is where the word pulemele'i came from: PULE= PIRA and MID=MELEI we do it all the time if a palagi come to our islands with his name JACK we will change it to SIAKI, JOHN will be IOAGE and MOSES will be MOSE. I myself hunted wild boars, and wild cattle, in the 60s and 70s from Palauli/Satupaitea Heights to Sili, Gataivai to Taga and Sala'ilua also Mt Silisili. And during those hunting time in the island of Savaii, we will always come across these mound of rocks, but the base size is smaller than confusion pulemele'i, but about the same height (as I was told by some of the village elders, the purpose of the hight of the mound is to get near the treetops, so the "tagata seulupe" (pigeon catcher) will be closer to the birds we call these mounds "KIASEU" (or tiaseu) Smaller ones looks like they were built for 2 or may be 5 people. There are words and proverbs can be trace back to these KIASEU: "kiaseu o kamali'i" "sopo le maguvale i kiaseu" "aua le seukafili le ga'a" "la'u lupe fa'alele" "lupe o le foaga" "lupe o malumaugu" "vae efu" Le seuga a Lefaoseu o Upolu ma Ulumu o Savai'i na afua ai le "gakia i vao ae puaiga i le ala" and so much more proverbs and words As a Samoan it is an insult to have an ousider come in dig up dirt and tell me where I come from, and explain me about my culture and my ancestors NO! NO! NO! we are rich in proverbs, songs, and words we can trace our own past kusa lava pe kala lasi Samoa leave it alone aua pe fananau mai isi tupulaga a'oa'oina i Iugivesike, e koe fo'i lava i Savai'i kalage o koeaiiga makukua mo faamaklaga sa'o E leai gi alagaupu, leai gi pese, po'o gi upu o faamakala ai se PIRA-PULE MID-MELE"I E le valea uma fo'i kamaiki Savai'i.

WOW I know exactly what this site is, this was in the backyard of my fathers childhood home, well close to it......my grandmother was born in 1909, 9 years later the influenza disease hit samoa in apia due to the dumb ship that came from new zealand with the sick cooks and other people aboard that ship. Well the story was passed down to my father and He passed it down to me. The pyramid is nuthing but stones that were piled up to keep the disease from spreading back out of the ground...why? their were so many people dying left from right, that they had to do something real quick, so a certain man, i dont know his name neither does my father remembers who his name was, i believe my father was about 12 when his mother shared the story with him, but this man decided to start digging, filling the holes with bodies unknown, first it was mostly my grandfathers and grandmothers bloodline...my grandmother was the only one out of her siblings, mother and father, to survive......but then death Crept over the whole island, and all those that were alive started to dig, Creating a bigger hole filling it with bodies all over the place. Towards the end of the Black Death season, a couple of High Chiefs from the Island were infected with the disease and were put into this giant hole with others from the island, and were the last to be put in...then the top of the hole was covered in stone and maybe was made to look like a memorial for all those that died back then...well hope this helped, i just watched the video and it brought back memories of when my father told me this WOW...Awesome

Two thousand years ago would be about the time Fe'epo, and, Atiogie started the rebellion against Tuitoga. The same time maybe my ancestor Fua Au Toa from Pago Pago chased them out.

Yes the Tongan engineered and built the pyramids but alot of its history has been lost due to the fact that the Samoans wanted it to be forgotten maybe due to its dark history. Samoans probably were forced labor to build but of course engineered by the Tongan Elite. It is fascinating but at the same time stuff like this is why some Samoans have ill feelings toward us. I wish we could just lie about it all and say Samoans built it for some ceremonial purpose but that would not be the TRUTH 😢.

We are one of the lost tribes of Israel called Naphtali. this is sort of monument is found all across Polynesia and was used as a meeting place where all chiefs from around the pacific would meet to prevent wars between the islands and chiefs. like our fringes on our matts and clothing these are practices bought over from the promised land when we were dispersed to the 4 corners like our brothers in America and south America the so called Africans. the bible says we will loose our ways and identity. these rock formation/s are recorded in Genesis 31:44-53. we are of Jacob who later was called Israel. Deuteronomy 33:23 tells us where we will be in the last days. please research Naphtali our forefather from Isaac and he from Abraham. peace be with you.
