DRAGONS IN PARADISE - TALES OF TIME

  • The first wave of Chinese immigrants arrived in Samoa in the late 19th Century. As time stretched on and the more that came (be it as free settlers or indentured labourers), they integrated into the culture, learnt the fa'asamoa, married Samoans, had Samoan families and eventually died in Samoa as Samoans.
    The legacy they left behind is powerful and can be seen in the culture and the people of Samoa today.
    Despite the history, the newest wave of Chinese to arrive in Samoa has upset a lot of the locals. Taking businesses that should be set aside for Locals, skirting laws set up to prevent them from doing so and funnelling money out of the Samoan economy, are just some of the issues being voiced by Samoans.
    This documentary, 'Dragons In Paradise', delves into the history of the Chinese in Samoa and examines the potential consequences of the latest Chinese influx that is sweeping the Pacific.

    Too bad there were no pictures & no documentation of him..so we would never know his family in China!! The only thing we have is a picture he had of Canton China! One of the most hard working men ever... him & the other Chinamen he migrated with😕

    Really enjoyed this short doco! puts a lot of clarity not only on the introduction of the Chinese, yet also the mindset of the palagi rulers at the time (segregation, monoculture etc). My concern is that people are connecting her story of genealogy with the current status of Chinese investment in Samoa. Being afa kasi myself it amuses me to read comments on how "we" look down on our Samoan brothers and sisters, or how the Chinese at least worked along side etc. My fear in the future of Samoa doesn't necessarily start with China, yet the current mindset of Samoa. China is now the factory of the world, a hungry business driven machine, with very little care shown to the population. We have a corrupt government which aren't even smart enough to get a good deal for themselves haha. I predict in the future that along side the Chinese investors, you'll see just as many church investors. Right under the noses of the people, Catholic, Mormon, Jehova, 7th day, methodist... The list goes on!! Where do you think there investment comes from?
    Some food for thought.

He said his grandfather always invited his Chinese boys over to play Mahjong and smoke Opium, he made alot of money selling Opium to the businessmen in Samoa. My great grandfather (Ah Ken) came to Samoa as an indentured laborer from South China, he fell in love with a girl from Fagalii and never returned to his family. Made me emotional thinking about the hardship and consequences he may have faced not to leave his new found family in Samoa. As for this new generation Chinese, were in a danger zone now, reportedly China has invested $230million USD to Samoa to date... does PM seriously think its a goodwill handout? hell nah! our country is indebted to China, clearly they have a world take over agenda and our PM is a sucker for letting pull the wool over our eyes, its definitely a modern day financial colonialism! I strongly suggest we boycot any Chinese business outside of the Apia district and those with lesser than 60% of their staff are locals.

      I was in Samoa for holidays visiting family last September and there were 3 local shops in the village, 2 of them being small corner shop type stores and the other being a large Supermarket type which had just opened a year before. Was told by my cousin, land the supermarket is on, is still owned by a local Samoan family however the business and all goods in it are owned by a Chinese family who had only been in Samoa for 2 years at that time. As the new wave of Chinese have access to cheaper goods coming from mainland China and massive buying power locally, the variety of their products and especially how less expensive their pricing is compared to the local Samoan shops bascially meant, everyone in the village was going to the Chinese run business. To put it in perspective, their pricing matches and is even lower than what is in Apia which a 45 minute drive from where I was and 3 other local run and owned stores have all closed in the last 16 months as they can't compete with the Chinese run supermarket. Like you said regarding the PM and gov't, they let this happen and unless something happens at the legislative level, Samoa will continue to get exploited.

    • @jjm4526
      @jjm4526 Před 5 lety +6

      Would you prefer the locals pay higher prices just so some other families can have a good business? Life is hard. Too many Samoan businesses have had a comfortable and charmed life with their high prices and are only now moaning because they have forced to lower their prices or they are being out-competed by people who simply work harder.

      please stop reading far right SAMOA OBSERVER propaganda shit, will break your heart to see how many Samoan's comment here are shaming Chinese ethnic, and denying Samoans are part chinese! the new wave has more capital, the old wave coolies didn't have any money, there's no difference between two waves of chinese, they both work harder than the local and push limit to succeed the most, the grandfather or Rhonezlee even went back to China and buried in China when he died, all of his hard work in Samoa left to Samoans. Samoa's government building was funded by Chinese in 1994, It's not $230m they borrowed, it's $1,3bn USD they borrowed from 3 east asian banks, and Chinese are buiding samoans everything they need. It's disgusting to read comments like Chinese Samoan need to be sent to Korea, disappear. You want to boycoot Chinese buisness, imagine they did that to your grandfather! Do you honner your grandfather's hard work? He built your family everything you have today thanks to him, Do you even know where your grandfather's from? Do you speak chinese and respect your heritage? Why the fuck is samoan culture more important than chinese culture? Chinese culture is richer and way more interesting than pacific island culture, you obviously knows nothing. Isn't this kind of SICK?

    • @juzzybot3455
      @juzzybot3455 Před 3 lety +1

      @@directorlunchie2322 While I appreciate the sentiment you're expressing, you saying that Chinese culture is "richer and way more interesting" than Pacific Island culture isn't really accurate. For one, there is no Pacific Island culture. Shared ancestry aside, there are Pacific Islands and each group of people from those islands have their own unique culture, something I know you're aware of. There is also no qualitative amount from which cultural richness can be measured because the considerations are arbitrary. It's comparing apples to oranges and seems like something said purely to piss people off? Your anger is clear, and we all know misery loves company, but if you want people on your side you probably shouldn't finish by insulting not only their culture but the culture of every other Pacific Islander. It really was an unnecessary and inaccurate comment that invalidated a lot of what you said which is a shame because for the most part I agree with you.

    Did she say hospital or hospitable? Mrs. Hospital is trying to say there's racism to the new wave of Chinese. She's mistaken, and ill informed. The old Samoans didn't have a choice of whether welcome the Chinese back then, because the palalagi brought them in as indentured labourers, hence they welcomed them in, bred, with them, and they assimilated. This new crop of Saiga are rich entrepreneurs hoping to cash in the local economy cause there's virtually little competition to what the Chinese economy can offer to terms of manufacturing. There has to be some sort of protectionism for the local retailers.

    • @joshmangere5809

      She never said these racism with the new wave of Chinese, she was talking about how her grandfather and his generation were treated, and why are you trying to make fun of the way she speaks? She is way smarter than you, she speaks two languages while you struggle with one. I guess it hurts you to know facts about how whites treated Samoans then, and even now. Funny how you've a problem with Chinese but don't bring that same energy about palagi's who came to samoa and felt like they could just rule over us base on the lagu of their white skin. It's obvious today with Samoans who have a little white blood in them thinking they're better than Samoans

    Although I love this documentary and how this lady was able to go to China to meet her grandfather's family, but please don't be blinded by the fact that China today and China back then are completely different. Today, China is a world power, still trying to convince the world that they are not a communist country, although they have deviated from that for a while, their history of human rights violations is appalling. Nowadays, they refer to themselves as more Capitalists..capitalism. China's military is the biggest in the world and one of the most powerful. It has nothing to do with being racist, Samoa has to look out for the welfare of their people and future. For a tiny island nation, they can be wiped from the face of the earth. Open your eyes and your mind, be smart Samoa. Don't be blinded by money! You have a Prime Minister there who is blinded by money, kissing the enemy's backside.

    They need to talk to the president of the USA! Make Samoa first policy. You wanna play in Samoa you need to hire Samoans, do not bring your own laborers. Allow Samoans to compete economically..... It’s not racism, it’s national security.... China is doing this globally to a lot of small nations. Especially those that don’t have a defense force. Something to think about eh! God Bless Samoa

I always consider myself as a full Samoan but people never think that when they see me first time. They would say that I look like a Filipino or mix of some sort of asian lol Chinese blood was really infused in my bloodline.

    Interesting that that Keni guy thinks the old Chinese weren't Chinese and instead Samoan? Denying their heritage and ethnicity to suit your argument against current Chinese isn't right. Also, the old "order" that keil guy is referring to was whites on top, taking all Samoan land, marrying local women and owning all businesses etc. Yet it was and is more widely accepted compared to Chinese ownership tsk tsk

    The old chinese married locals, had Samoan children and worked hard. The new chinese are marrying locals, are having Samoan children and are working hard. What is the difference? People like ken from the samoa observer cannot complain (as he always does) about the higher cost of living and then whinge and moan about chinese lowering the prices of everyday goods. We never really hear from the Samoans buying from these shops but always hear about the other (Samoan) business owners who instead of working harder, innovating, going into partnerships with other business owners, using more family lands etc etc, they just sit there and whinge and moan through the newspapers and on social media. I bet you that OLP guy is a local business owner who doesn't want to lower his prices.
