That was just an example of a British vs American spelling thing. It may serve a purpose in American English but in British English, it's useless. Britain has many words containing an S where the Americans would use a Z. So I wouldn't say Z is important cuz if it was, why 80 to 90% of Z sounding words written with an S in British english? Not saying Z is a bad letter, but it's usage in english is extremely low for a letter that actually have it's own sound. Then again, it's the French to be blame with this s/z confusion in english
