Great video! The bit about not looking at material really helps. I was looking at tabs while practicing and getting better at playing but not making much progress memorizing.

So, watching this video, I have this uncanny desire, here in Kansas City Missouri, right smack dab, 1500+ kilometers from the sea, to paddle into a glassy yet powerful head high left swell and walk up and hang ten, imagining I'm flying just above the surface of the sea. Then, as I'm right in the sweet spot, it pitches up on the first sandbar and gently curls into that hollow tunnel of indescribable serenity looking at the setting sun and blastin....
Oh I got lost for a moment. Nice longboard.
    So, love your style.
I'll share your page for sure.
I feel like you really get it. Wish I could play music with you some day.
I teach bass, surfing, guitar, sailing, drums, and vocal instruction, but never record anything.
I envy what you've done. I'll get over it, but dammit man. You are alright by me.
    One Love. .
    Keep rockin

Thanks Jacob, the surf board is more of an ornament these days! I'd appreciate a share. Let me know if you need with anything guitar 🎸

Interesting! I have the ability to hear in my head the next note or next several notes in whatever song I'm playing as its approaching (on songs I am familiar with obviously), so instead of just brute memorizing a song, that allows me to in some small way prepare for the upcoming chord changes. So I found your point interesting about knowing what chords are common in a song in, say, the D key, as you mentioned. I understand the concept of notes in keys, and can somewhat quickly recite what notes are in a chord, however as a beginner, I cannot yet find them easily on the fretboard (probably the most frustrating thing is not having the fretboard memorized), nor can I hear a note and know what it is by pitch alone. I don't know if that is going to make me either a sight reader or a brute memorizer, but what I got from the video is to learn a song in small chunks and build up to knowing a whole song, so I don't have to be either one. I feel like I know a few of the concepts needed to memorize songs well, but I just haven't gotten good enough at any of them to put them all together at the same time.
