- Everyone always thinks the "Boer War" is just the second one, but how many of you knew about the First Boer War of 1880 - 1881 when the Boers gave the British Empire a hiding in the Transvaal?

A big round of applause. This is the first video I've seen on CZcams where the narrator actually got the Afrikaans accent right. Well done sir. As an Afrikaner I thank and salute you.
Billy Kruger He’s dutch so it’s not that impressive.
Nie rerig nie maar dit vorder
@Bruno56 Why in the deuce did you think this was a good context for this kind of comment? Time and a place, man.
@Bruno56 if you really believe this blatant untrues, brought to you by jingoistic media since the early 1800's, sir, you are mercifully free from the ravages of intelligence, brave keyboard warrior from abroad.
It's Afrikaans with a Dutch accent.
There was a veteran of the 2nd Boer War who went on to serve as a senior officer in the 1st World War who wrote in 1921 that if the British had not fought the Boers in South Africa in 1899 - 1902 and had entered the 1st World War without learning all the lessons they had had to learn in South Africa , which entailed almost completely overhauling the way the Army was trained and run , then the 1st World War would truly have been all over by Xmas 1914 and the British would have lost it.
He wrote in his memoirs saying that 'Paul Kruger was the best friend the British Army ever had'. For the implications of losing the 1st World War would have been infinitely more catastrophic than losing a war in South Africa. Interesting. It was a kick up the arse needed just at the right time.
Also recall listening to a veteran of that war being interviewed sometime in the 1950s i think it was on the radio i recall him saying '' oh lord, those buggers ( Boers) could shoot..lol
Lol
so...you're saying the entire war happened for piets sake?
That's one way of seeing it :)
No the british put our children an women in consetraition camps
Alexander, nee Man! Dit was die TWEEDE Anglo-Boere-oorlog.
Alexander Smit is die eerste boer oorlog
Sheugnet Jones tweede vryheidsoorlog. 2nd freedom war from the boer perspective. 1899-1902. Their success in the first war might have made them a bit too cocky when the second time came around. They should have let the brits drown in gold while they maintained everything else. Avoid total war

Fire and movement was the historical innovation. A sniper is a marksman but not all marksmen are snipers.
what about Confederate soldiers in American Civil War?
I reckon the Boers and the the rural (Southern) Americans are somewhat the same. They're armed, know how to shoot and ride horse. Living in either texas, queensland or South Africa in those days would have been hard, probably still is (as a farmer anyway).
Black Templar
I'm getting sick and tired of being called Dutch, a third of our ancestry is Dutch and a third German. Why don't you call us Germans? Although they are weak and spineless Europeans like the Dutch, they are at least marginally better.
Callie call me boer , proud to be a boer. The boers invented guarilla warfare , before us everybody fought with brightly coloured clothes. The rest off the world followed us on how to fight under camouflage
You say early in the video that the British "should really have learned lessons from the American Revolution." The British in fact had learned the value of riflemen and sharpshooters from the Americans and used units such as the 60th Rifles and 95th Rifles to great effect throughout the Napoleonic Wars. The trouble was while during the Napoleonic Wars most troops were still armed with short range smooth-bore muskets deployed in lines and columns, rifles had a great advantage in range and accuracy at this time and trained soldiers could pick off officers almost at will. By the Crimean War and later still the First Boer War, rifles were readily available to all soldiers but the tactics for using them hadn't advanced much. Consequently lines and columns of troops all armed with accurate, long range and quick firing rifles were having at each other on European battlefields and in the American Civil War too causing enormous casualties. The Red Cross was set up to help deal with the huge amount of wounded soldiers around this time.
The Boers themselves as you say were expert marksmen, they had to be, and the ponderous formations of British troops made for excellent targets. In the second Boer War at the battle of Spien Kop the Cheshire Regiment was almost annihilated by the Boers, the vast majority shot through the head.
im dutch and i have never heard of the boers or anything to do with them before i found your channel. I really love these vids you make about them. Keep up the good work and im looking forward to more!
Glad I could introduce you to some South African history :)
Thank you - and welcome!
It's really sad that so many Dutch people don't know about your own history and people that were forgotten in Africa.
Kosta M. We never even got it thought in school. It kind of was like we had colonies in south africa and we didnt talk about it besides that.
Pieter den Boer Yup the Dutch wouldnt have any Afrikaaner return and didn't recognise them as citizens. Disgusting to turn your back on your own people.
vuurvlieg123 There are more then 4.5 million white people in South Africa of whom majority are Boers, no other colonial nation managed to leave a legacy like that, despite having colonies far longer then Netherlands.
Excellent video. Please do more Afrikaans history
Thanks man! I've got a few more coming :)
agreed, more Afrikaans history is very much apreciated. I love all your videos man. I have always been a sucker for history and Dutch-related history especially. Far too little is taught in school even when you chose history as a major in Gymnasium.

Phrenomythic Cheers man, really appreciate it!
Could you please make a video about the 1914 Boer Rebellion? (Also known as the Maritz Rebellion.). I think it's such an interesting chapter of Afrikaner history, and it links up very well with your Boer War videos.
Two of my ancestors fought in the Second Boer War, and one was captured and held prisoner during the 1914 Rebellion.
Thank you for making such insightful videos. Keep up the good work.
Groete uit Suid-Afrika!
Thanks for pronouncing everything properly, you don't know how much it hurts when people say it wrong.
keep up the good work Hilbert
Cheers man!
A bit of background history info here that few people know: The Boer War started when the English tried to hang 3 Boers accused of theft in my hometown of Potchefstroom. The ropes snapped 3 times and then the British decided to shoot them and so the rebellion started. To this day there is a monument/laager just outside Potchefstroom. And it was also a gentleman's conflict where they took a break in the middle of the day from fighting, had coffee and tea together and resumed fighting after.
Excellent. But the second Boer war was definitely not a gentleman war...
Even during a battle the Brits have to have their tea
Goeie dag sal jy my whatsapp ? 071 753 7683 Sal graag bietjei wil gesel en meer hoor van die storie.
The Boere were probably the best fighting men ever.
They were intelligent in war fighting also
I think the Spartans, Mongols, Vikings and Romans would disagree.
@@robinsinpost Pretty sure a battalion of Boeren would wipe the floor with any of those forces ; )
Great video. I am slowly and gradually learning more about this great and heroic people, the Boers. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for an excellent summary of that part of the South African history. The "Boers", however, were not only Dutch descendants. Some French (the Huguenots) and Germans (and few other Europeans), immigrated to South Africa after the Cape Colony was established and then formed the "Boer" population who started the Groot Trek. Dutch was initially the "mother's milk" who fed Afrikaans, but other languages also influenced the forming of Afrikaans as an independent language.
True! I'm Afrikaans ; and I was surprised to find in my family records that the vast majority of my ancestors were German; some French and actually very little Dutch. That and of course a few Indians, Guineans and Malays.
Great video, from a Boer's perspective! The modern Afrikaner still fish and hunts whenever the opportunity arise, we are proud Protestants! I love ALL history!
Hi History With Hilbert. This was excellent! Please don't stop making these informative videos.

Man, I really enjoyed this. Jou Afrikaans is glad nie sleg nie.
You are quite good at the phonetics. I'm new here, so I don't know if you've said it before, but do you have Dutch ancestry or are you just crazy about linguistics? You really entertained me with your accurate accent.
Wilco Boshoff Thank you very much! I'm glad my Afrikaans wasn't too bad, although I figure my Dutch accent is pretty strong haha 😂 My parents are Dutch so I was raised bilingual with that language and English :)

TY for posting this. As I live in the US theres alot of history that they dont teach us & though some college classes mention the 2nd Boer War as the immediate precurser to WW1 they only refer to it as the Boer War & no mention is made that another war in the exact same area took place a decade earlier. Speaking of history NOT taught in the US , could you do a video on the Spanish Civil War ? or perhaps 1 on the role Franco's Spain played in WW2 as that is just NEVER discussed. TY again & keep up the good work
Its not an American battle at all but there was at least one movie about 1930s England when an objectionable Prime Minister brought on the Germans that he heard of a barbaric prison camp which was the prototype for Hitler's execution and extermination facilities. An ambassador kindly reminded him of a UK tactic during the 1900 to 1903 war which was along those lines.
all boer wars are taught at westpoint U.S
Great video, it's refreshing to hear someone who can actually pronounce Boer correctly.
Thank you for your accurate prenounciations of our moedertaal (mother tongue). It did not go unnoticed☝️.

It would be fun to hear you trying to do a video in Afrikaans (though, as an Afrikaans L1 speaker myself, I would have to say it'd be cringe-worthy as all hell as well).
If you like, you can contact me and I'll help you with pronunciation. I also have access to a few history books on the Second Anglo-Boer War (written by South African historians)
still awewome though
Excellent video well done
Plenty of good reliable and accurate information on the history of the various republic’s in Southern Africa available in various institutions . Must admit I enjoyed the video
Nice stuff. Good work.
I love the comedy you threw into these
Great video of our history, baaie dankie!!
Just a fun fact, I have never heard it referred to specifically as the Boer war in South Africa, in English it always the Anglo-Boer wars, or rarely the freedom wars, and in Afrikaans it is the Vryheidsoorloë or Anglo-Boereoorloë.
Great video good job
geweldige video !!!
Great video 👊👊
Thanks man!
The rebellion of 1914 is one of the most important and most underrated parts of the Afrikaner history. That actually defined to a large extent the future of the Afrikaner in South Africa and the situation they are currently in. This explains why South west Africa (now Namibia) was part of South Africa for a long time. This explains how and why the political system in South Africa came to resemble the British one.
This part of our history is not taught in schools, most school who still teach Afrikaner history focuses on the Groot Trek etc. If you are interested, read "rebelspoor" by l.j. Bothma.
A video by Hilbert would be great!! (Maybe after the 2nd boer war video :P)
I like the way you explain these videos. Can you do one on the second boer war?

"You don't object to our help do you?"
"It all depends on what you damned English want for it, afterwards"
The lines that led me to my first introduction to the boer war.
This is a fair assessment. Just to add a little: it is said that once on the mountain general Colly believed their position to be very secure and he wrote a letter to his wife saying "We can stay here forever". Which is somewhat prophetic as a number of them are buried there.
Top video weer, Hill Bird.
