  • A brief history of Gambino underboss Frank DeCicco, also known as Frankie Cheech. He served under John Gotti taking part in the Paul Castellano hit on Dec. 16, 1985. He was killed in retaliation by a car bomb on April 13, 1986.

THE REAL TOUGH GUYS ARE THOSE WHO GET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND GO TO WORK TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY EVEN WHEN THEY FEEL TOO SICK TO GET OUT OF BED...THEY BUILT THIS COUNTRY AND THEY ARE NOT SAFE ON THE STREETS THEY BUILT WITH CALLOUSED HANDS...THESE MEN AND WOMEN I RESPECT...GIVE HONOR TO THEM...... NOT A BUNCH OF BEASTS WHO WOULD MURDER THEIR OWN FAMILY.

I think if Mr. Neil was made boss, with his ability to control John and with his masterful way of commanding loyalty from all his guys, he most likely would have chosen Frank DeCicco on his deathbed, as the new boss. Everybody saw Franky as smart, cool and collected. Few people would have argued with that, including John, who looked to Mr. Neil like a father and respected him greatly. People blame John for the downfall of the family--and rightly so, to an extent. He certainly is not the only one who should be held accountable for the fall of the family. But let's not forget that it was him on those tapes, naming names and talking about crimes, something Carlo never did so openly and so loudly. It was John's admission (on tape) about Sammy's direct involvement that spurred Sammy to talk to the Feds. Some ask, "What choice did Sammy have?" Well, for starters he could have kept his mouth shut, but...when the "Boss" isn't keeping his mouth shut, talking loudly about his people--people who were closest to him--then I can see how and why Sammy felt betrayed. I, personally, feel that John, with his flamboyant brass, his ego and flashy style, not to mention that he enjoyed the publicity (that he could not rein in his swagger in the face of the camera) were all contributing factors in the eventual disintegration, from within the Borgata's own highest walls. Simply put, he (Johnny Boy) lacked the discreet sensibilities as well as the ability to exercise and regulate self control that is required to head such a large and powerful organization. He was the opposite of Carlo, who was very secretive and extremely discreet in everything he did. But, back to my original point: It was Carlo's decision to make Big Paul new Boss that was what really brought the whole thing down. Big Paul was a "Businessman" at heart, and not a "Gangster" like Mr. Neil, who lived, walked and breathed "the streets" through and through. I think that the Family would have thrived, and lasted longer under Mr. Neil. Mr. Neil would have run it like a brotherhood, the way it was meant to be run. Big Paul was only in it for himself. He didn't care for his people whatsoever. All he cared about was the money and the power. He had no heart for anybody, unlike Mr. Neil who was always with his guys, around them, checking in on them. Big Paul, I think, was ashamed of them--the kind of people they were, but he had no problem taking their money and telling them what to do. Between Franky, Johnny Boy and Sammy...I think Frank would have made the best Boss. Definitely. He was the smartest, and I think that he would have been much more careful and quieter than John and a whole lot less reckless than Sammy. ( :E

Paul should’ve stayed on as a high level capo doing white collar crimes, I completely agree Neil should’ve been made boss. Paul and Gotti wouldn’t be constantly feuding, and money would’ve been made hand over fist. It’s kind of ironic how Carlo brought the family to the monumental heights, then brought it all down by appointing Paul as Boss over Neil

DeMeo wasn't a capo. Nino Gaggi was DeMeo's capo. In fact, DeMeo was the only made man in the DeMeo crew. The rest of the guys were associates and prospects who hadn't been straightened out yet. After Castellano had DeMeo whacked, Testa and Senter went to work for the Luchese family.

Frank DeCicco actually passed the hit off to Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso, who in turn recruited the “Gemini Twins” Anthony Senter and Joey Testa to kill they’re boss Roy Demeo. However, Roy was only a soldier in the Gambino family, he wasn’t a capo, he was in Nino Gaggi’s crew but Roy had a crew of associates. The Gemini twins were promised rank in the Lucchese family if they killed Roy. After Roy was killed, they were made in the Lucchese family. A lot of people think Roy Demeo was a capo, and that his crew members were all made soldiers, but that isn’t correct; Nino Gaggi was Roy’s capo. Also, John Gotti’s crew pretended that they were broke in order to gain support from other crews who were actually broke. They were making a lot of money off heroin, they didn’t start selling heroin because they were broke; Angelo Ruggiero’s brother Sal was a major drug dealer who died in a plane crash. Angelo then took over the operation, it had nothing to do with them starving for money.

    • @SantiagoBernebeu
      @SantiagoBernebeu Před 3 lety

I'd like to believe that the mess may never have happened, but based on Gotti's ambitions and flamboyancy, this was practically an impossibility. Let's assume as boss, Mr Neil having to appoint an underboss and since he did not favour Castellano, that would have been either Gotti or maybe DeCicco. If it was DeCicco, he would have been boss for only 4 and a half months with him dying in April 1986 and Mr Neil having died in Dec 1985. Bear with me here....if DeCicco was the new boss, he would have appointed either Gotti or Gravano as underboss. If it was Gotti, could DeCicco fully trust him? No! Gotti would have got itchy feet and eventually taken out DeCicco to become the new boss.
If the underboss was Gravano, Gotti who would be a capo doing the hard yards on the streets, would plot and scheme in taking out both Gravano and DeCicco. This would create a mess that the Feds could not ignore and ultimately would lead to Gotti's demise.
Whichever way you look at the situation, all roads leads back to Gotti and the inevitable mess he created by taking out Castellano. To be fair, Gotti had no choice as he knew with Mr Neil dead, he had to blink first. Had he laid low and waited for Castellano to be sentenced to life, he still wouldn't be safe as Tommy Bilotti as new boss would target him.

For some men who grew up poor in NYC back in the day and weren't academically inclined I could see where they could be lured in. Having money and women and an easy lifestyle might seem better than dying poor at 80 and experiencing none of those things. They'd rather take the chance of getting a bullet in the head at 47 or spending the last 30 years of their life in jail in exchange for having 30 years of living the perceived "good life". I could see the draw of the mob life back in the heyday when they had a stranglehold on NYC and before the RICO act. Still not good idea but I get it.
Joining the mob nowadays would be insane. You would have to be born into a mob family to even consider it. Everyone rats to save their skin and with DNA and modern day surveillance tactics it's pretty hard to even operate.

That was Paul Castellano's wife Nina Manno in the car with him, not Carlo Gambino but thanks BB this was a good find on Frankie Cheech. Not enough about him on the net.

I think Gravano might be partially responsible for DeCicco's murder. He might knew John won't come and tip Gigante.
He was "king of backstabbers" and also he needed to manipulate John, which was impossible with smart man as Frank in his place.
I think Gravano just needed John to take a rap. He was on his own all the time.
He did manipulate Gotti into killing whoever Sammy wanted.
What John didn't realize is every murder brought Sammy profit.
I really don't know (as in this treacherous world, even government whitnesses play their games) but I just think it's possible.

I truly think that is very possible. We also know for a fact he was feeling something of that nature because he was starting to get really aggravated with gravano. He was even bad mouthing gravano. But I have to say I think Gotti was mostly a prop to take the bosses position. The government and media was all over the place. It's hard to operate a criminal Empire when you're being recorded and conversations are being recorded all the time.

    • @DarlingNikki2

As smart as Carlo was, he should've realized that giving the top job to Castellano instead of Dellacroce would split the family into dangerous factions and ultimately lead to its decline. I understand he wanted things to turn toward more legitimate avenues of making money, but the truth is, the Mafia was built on the underbelly activities of loan sharking, gambling, prostitution, porn, money laundering and drugs, so the idea of turning it into some kind of Fortune 500 organization was ill-conceived. Also, Castellano did not have the same kind of shrewd understanding of basic human nature as Carlo did and removed himself from his underlings as if he was too good for them and treated them like peons. His dismissive arrogance coupled with Gotti's simmering resentment and ambition was a recipe for a disaster and when Dellacroce died, the die was cast.

This is an excellent video, I haven't spotted any incorrect data, and it is very helpful at summarizing the information on Frankie I was looking for for a book I am writing on the DeMeo crew and the cops involved. I am going to include you in an acknowledgement. The only thing I disagree with on the Roy part was that it wasn't really Paul's paranoia that caused Roy to get killed. Roy should have been whacked many times over for many reasons by the time he died.
