  • Oh Crap! Did your S197 Mustang Parking Brake Fail? This is Part 1: Parking Brake Overview & What Fails
    I had multiple components fail on the parking brake system of my 2007 Mustang GT right after I bought it. I wanted to put together a few videos that explain the system, how it fails, and how to repair each failed part.
    This first video is going to kick off this series and explain the overall parking brake system on a 2005-2014 Mustang, and what exactly fails to cause the system not to operate. In subsequent videos, I will show how to replace some of the different components of the parking brake system.
    Full Parking Brake Series:

    Part 2: • S197 Parking Brake Par...
    Part 3: • S197 Parking Brake Par...

    By far the best video on you tube this guy explains in perfect detail with phenomenal pictures you can see clearly and he explains i detail how the system works so you have an understanding of what your attempting. Last but not least thank god he gets right to the point he doesn’t tell you bs about what he had for lunch or why he thinks everything sucks or why his neighbor is an idiot The only thing wrong here is I hope like hell he makes many more videos come about repair. People out there making videos could learn a lot from this guy Again by far best most informative and to the point video on you tube Big thanks and perfect job

    Looool, wish this was available when mine busted about a year ago. I was in a Del Taco drive thru, went to pull the eBrake and the whole thing snapped and went straight up into the air. Pretty embarrassing at the time, but funny that it happened now. I fixed it myself, but god damn I struggled to get the actual rear brake cables to fit into that adaptor at the end of the new eBrake even after fucking with the rear calipers. Ford really fucked up on the quality of some of these parts on these S197's.

    Appreciate your thorough explanation on how the emergency brakes operate. That being said, if the cables and spring on the caliper all appear to be working properly and the brake doesn't engage, then I would presume the calipers need to be replaced. Would you agree ? Thanks!

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem

      So I would say most likely. However I would personally have another set of hands so that you can actually verify it.
      If you have someone in the car engaging the parking brake while you're at the caliper and you clearly see everything moving and the cable is tightening at the caliper, and it does not make the brake pads grip the rotor, then I would say yes there is some sort of issue with the caliper itself

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem

      And I would also make certain that the handbrake is adjusted properly. The beauty of this system is it's all visually verified. So if the handle goes up and has tension and under the car you see the cables moving and tightening, and then at the caliper you don't see really anything happening when that spring is compressed. Then to me I don't know how the caliper isn't at fault there. If everything is tightening including that spring mechanism, but the caliper does not compress The pad to the rotor, something's malfunctioning somehow with that.

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem

      And one other thought that just popped into my head. Make sure you have enough brake pad material on your brake pads. If they're overly worn then you're not going to get any engagement

    My parking brake stays on even though I put it back down and it was being abnormally hard to pull up and I thought it was just because it was cold outside so I just pulled harder and then it went loose and now when I put it down my parking brake stays on and when I try to move I can tell it’s on and my light is on on the dash that says it’s on so I feel like it got disconnected somehow but if it’s still engaged then idk what broke

      I’m having this same problem, have you found a fix yet ?

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem

      This is not a complicated system. You're going to have to look at your own car and look at each piece. It's a handle, two cables that connect to the calipers and that's it. If one part of that is not working, there's your problem. This is not the type of system you can diagnose through the internet. There is no electronic portion of this system so it's all manual cables and springs etc.

    • @jstample
      @jstample Před 10 měsíci

      Jack up the rear and see if one of the wheels is able to be rotated. If one does turn then you’ll know it’s an issue with the caliper or cable that runs to the stuck side. If neither will rotate, then it’s an issue with the actual handbrake lever assembly or the cable running from that assembly to the “equalizer block” (the little 3 hole piece that connects all 3 cables).
      Hopefully this will help anyone reading isolate their problem.

    I still can’t figure mine out. The brackets at the calipers are squeezing all the way down and the pads are barely contacting the rotor. The pads/rotors are brand new. Not sure what to check next. Everything is adjusted all the way tight and still not getting the pads to squeeze hard enough 🤔

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem +1

      You may need a second set of hands to put eyes on it and have someone watch under the car to ensure that your handle is not seized as you engage/disengage. It is just a lever system, so something likely is bound up.

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem +1

      I would also ensure that you have the parking brake adjusted correctly inside the car.

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem

      One other thing to check. These calipers needs to be "turned in" with the special tool when replacing brake pads. Did you ensure that was done correctly and the alightment spots are in the correct place?

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před rokem +1

      You'd have to check parts, a lot has changed in 3 years with inflation and the endless money printing. The handle I recall being a couple hundred. Cable was 40ish at the time I believe

      @@mfrain3870 You are welcome! I wouldn't let that deter me from buying the car as long as you know up front. But I would be prepared to replace both cables, and the handle. I just looked on eBay and from some of the Ford dealers, it's around 180 dollars for the handle which is right around what I paid

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před 3 lety +1

      There is a good chance it's actually the rear cables that are seized. The cables seize inside their casing. Very possible that's your problem.

    My ebrake handle is stuck down. Won’t even go up a hair.

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před 2 lety

      My advice would be once you understand how the system works you realize how easy it is. If everything else checks out I would safely secure the car and and go under it so you can figure out why it's not moving. If it's never been used those two rear cables could have seized in place. You'll have to check each part out.

    • @wroman786
      @wroman786 Před 2 lety

      @@3VJohnny seized open ? I just bought it from the original owner. He said 2 after buying it brand new it got stuck in the down position and silly him. He never took it back to the dealer to get it checked. Which I found odd. He always just left it in gear.

    • @3VJohnny
      @3VJohnny  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes because the handle only moves if the rest of the system moves. Go through each part of the system in the videos I laid out and you should be able to figure it out. If the handle doesn't move something is seized.
