Could be microbiological growth in the diesel. It grows in diesel that has been sat too long and the water content in the diesel increases over time. It'll block everything up from tank to injectors. I spent 21 years working for Esso and MBG was something that we had to regularly monitor. A friend of mine bought some "cheap" red diesel to put in his boat....the fuel had been sat too long and it made an absolute mess of the fuel system on his Volvo Penta Diesel.....he broke down in the middle of the River Tamar. I helped him clean everything up. Of course it could just be a relay 😀

Bought a '56 plate 1.8tdci hatchback about 3 years ago. Almost straight away it started to play up - occasionally stuttering or cutting out, with the instrument cluster also behaving weirdly. Finally it died and went into immobiliser mode. The AA didn't have a clue, but a local auto-electrician knew it was the instrument cluster itself. He took it out and sent it away for refurbishment, got it back, refitted it and hey presto! That was at about 111K, I've put a lot of faultless miles on it since then. Apparently its quite a common fault, and Mondeos can suffer the same. Love your videos by the way.

Just sold my wife’s 56 plate 1.8 tdci, 170k. Ford went over to a wet belt for the lower cam belt at around that year, so two belts, the earlier engines where chains on the lower. Total arse to change. 100k interval changes. Didn’t wanna risk it, so sold it. Also, these don’t have lift pump.. so are a arse to bleed. Vacuum fill the filter after fitting it and you may have to crack the injector pipes while cranking.

Then it goes and disgraces itself and reminds you why it is you don’t deal in snotters!! Guess it’s fuel, but bizarre that it didn’t miss or judder before packing up. I knew a fella that had a fleet of these nationwide, all 1.8 tdci’s - he liked them because they were cheap and easy to repair- but he swore that the engines would always fail at around 220k miles - you could almost time it, apparently- love the vids, can’t wait for the next one, Cheers.

@bill Bloggs Not sure the diesel TDCi has wheel sensor. Just to clarify to everybody, when I say mine cut out, it would actually go into limp mode which is just as dangerous as it drops down to about 15mph max. First time it happened was on the M56. I was doing about 80mph and the warning lights and ford sound went off on the panel. So F dangerous. I managed to get it quickly onto hard shoulder. No way was I sitting in the outside lane. I would rather the speed kept up and the engine melted than Fking limp mode.

  • @hojnikb

Looking at the engine bay and sound of the engine, this might be 1.8tdci, correct?
I'd start by looking at the cam position sensor, These tend to break after a while and engine will immediately stop running.
Then there's the usual fuel issues (1.8tdcis dont have a low pressure fuel pump, so you can skip looking at those). As others suggested, fuel filter, air in the system, sludge diesel or water could be the issue here. If you plan on changing the fuel filter, i highly recommend installing non return valve style hand pump in the fuel rail (easiest to do in the plastic rail just above the fuel injectors). This will get rid of any air, when you change the filter and make your life much easier. Renault DCIs use this kind of pump from the factory!
Snapped belt(s) or dead high pressure fuel pump could also be the issue, but probably less likely.
Also, i'd invest into a forscan compatible obd scanner (around 5-10$ on ebay, software is free). It makes diagnosing these suckers much easier.

Weird cutting out with no fault codes stored problems on Focuses (and related cars like CMaxes, Transit Connects etc.) can be caused by the solder joints on the main connector for the clocks cracking- this causes CANBUS faults. I think normally you get weird warnings and limp mode before it dies completely, but it's quite an easy job to whip the clocks out, dismantle them and re-solder the joints, so maybe worth a go. Took me about an hour to do my brother's.

Hope it's just the filter but I've had experience of a couple of transit connects with this 1.8 tdci which have suffered complete pump failure with no warning signs before hand. They like regular filter changes and not to be run low on fuel. Good luck!

Good luck bleeding and changing the fuel filter! It is an absolute nightmare! Well the bleeding part.
I would advise to change the insert filter and fill the fuel to the top of the filter housing before putting it all back. I have also poured the diseal into the outlet pipe going into the injectors and the reassemble. Only then it has started :)

ok buddy , not sure then , ive seen diesel cars travel a fair distance on the fuel in the filter and lines after the pump has packed in. But i think 20 miles would be pushing it on 1.5 litres of diesel..I had a call out to a diesel that had died about 10 miles after visiting a garage for broken wipers..the fuel pump was not running..i checked the fuses..guess what he had used the fuel pump fuse to replace the blown wiper fuse !! I got it running again with a fuse..then had to find the bad earth that killed the wiper fuse..such fun ..ok it was a long shot but looking forward to seeing how it goes..thanks again for the great videos..peace and love 👍🏻☮❤

Keep us bang up to date with this one mate, it's got interesting lol, and keep your eye out for more £200 challenges, great viewing. And.. new microphone much better. Cheers, Alex.

I would head over to the relay and fuse box...... I had the same issue with a vehicle i had. Driving along with no signs of issues, then the engine cut out, all dashboard lights came on..... After around a hour later, tested the fuel pump Relay, and that fail the test.
Replaced relay and the old bird sung again.....

Take the injectors out and try starting the engine. If diesel sprays out of the injectors it is not a fuel issue.
It could be a compression issue or a timing issue. It does sound like you might have had the cambelt skip a tooth, it as been sitting for a while somtimes the cambelt can get a bit stiff.

Another fantastic video Rob. 6 months ago, I had the same Focus but 59 plate TDCI, very similar mileage...best car I have ever owned (had it about 7 years). I commute in and out of London, the car cost me nothing but pads and disks, oil and the odd set of tyres. By far the cheapest and most reliable car I have EVER owned. It had the Lynx engine which was solid as anything. Started getting quite a lot of oil leakage at 160k, the cost to get an indy to clean engine and work out where the leak was was going to be costly, so sadly, I traded it in for a brand new ULEZ compliant car. Wish I could have kept it as it was solid as anything. Hope you can get this one sorted as I loved mine and did a similar mileage to your one in it.

Hey Rob; I drive a diesel Berlingo which suffers from Turbo-Lag especially when pulling out of a junction infront of a lorry or bus :-( ................... It also has a rather annoying habit of just simply cutting out without warning. I have to drift to a standstill, wait a few minutes, turn the key a few times and eventually it'll fire-up and won't happen again for several months. It runs 'perfectly' other than those annoying blips ................ I blame the turbo - don't trust 'em - Good luck though :-)

Only watching this now but I had a 1800 Mondeo which quit in the fast lane of a motorway in the same manner that was the diesel pump which took 4 weeks to get and needed to be calibrated according to FORD. The car was under 6 months old and low milage.

Looks like you bought it from a farmer. Manky red diesel? Check ecu for moisture. I had a golf gti that used to cut out and the windscreen drain holes were blocked so water slurped over ecu. Had to use to wait 10 minutes before it started again.
