Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Prince Markie Dee went on to write and produce some classic records, do your research on it and become amazed at some of your favorite songs you would have never thought he wrote and produced, start with Mary J first album. Crazy because at a real young age I remember being like "eh" when they dropped Wipeout and then the Twist and started looking at them as gimmicky, and this is 88 when everything exploded and they were left behind. RIP!

Yeah, that was the exact moment. I was like “Nope.” But of course I’m sure when you’re young, with one source of income, and the ones in control of the money say “this is the move”, there’s HEAVY pressure to try it their way - especially in a group, if your friends are convinced.

Salute to Prince Markie Dee 🇵🇷 The Fat Boys were doing it all.... Acting, Musical artists, endorsements, videos. These brothers made a dent in the industry.
R.I.P 🙏 thank you Soren for capturing Mark Anthony Morales what may be the last testimonial of his career. Historical content. The Fat Boys definitely have multiple tracks on the soundtrack of my life.

  • @shadowmixx
    @shadowmixx Před 3 lety +5

Wow The knowledge and the science behind what this brother was speaking about was phenomenal.
Management verses friendship. Frustrations of having control of your art verses representation. Creativity
verses commercialism. Future potential verses finances and a paycheck. At the heart of it all,...lies the behind
the scene 'feuds' verses the expectations of the 'fans'.
So many people have lived and learned the prospects and the perils of 'the business' as we call it.
So many have come and gone. All with their individual stories to tell.
Even at 17, Mark Morales was a visionary. One can only wonder what Fat Boys would have become if he
had been allowed to manage the group himself.
Of all the interviews I have seen on U A E, this one rocks me to the core. A lot like the news of Marvin Gaye's
passing when I was a kid and later in life, the news of Tupac. (sigh)
I didn't mean to write so much here Soren. I guess I just needed to vent a little. Anyway,...thanks again for this
platform. (Rest easy Markie Dee) Peace

Hip Hop music is about funky BREAKS in songs, not the songs themselves. People weren't "going off" "breaking" to the verses of a song it was THE BREAKS. All that Beach Boys and Rock cover song stuff was wack.
And to add, people...the streets, wasn't feeling Walk This Way. It was a slow buildup for people to accept it only because it was getting an unusual amount of repetitive radio airplay. Before radios disappeared from the streets and the last subway cars, dudes would fast forward and skip past Walk This Way. Sonically, it just didn't resonate with us. We enjoyed the video but not the song. It's Tricky had more going for it sonically, but the video was corny and wack as hell. Almost ruined wanting to listen to the song.
