  • In the latest addition of Fried Egg Guides, Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison take us through Alister MacKenzie's Santa Cruz masterpiece, Pasatiempo. Covering the unique landforms and features of the property, they explain why this might be the most representative MacKenzie course and how a (now approved) full restoration could make it one of the great public courses in the country.

Great video. I'm 75 now . Grew up in San Jose and my father and I used to play Pasatiempo every year near my birthday for several years in the early 70s. I was a scratch golfer back then and played collegiate golf at U.C. Berkeley. I still have he scorecard from Feb. 13, 1971. From the blue tees I was 5 over after 5 and shot 70 with a 30 on the back nine. Birdied 6, 11, 12, 13, 16, and 18. Always wondered if anyone ever shot 29 or better on the back nine and if my 30 is low. What a day and great memories. To shoot 30 on one of the most iconic nine holes anywhere.

I attended college in the Bay Area and used to play Pasatiempo. I fell in love with it from the first time I played it. I would shoot anywhere from 77 - 85 back then and really enjoyed it. Being from San Diego where we are basically a desert, this course really stood out to me as something special and it was. About a decade after college I settled in OC down in SoCal. Around that time, I took my parents from San Diego on a three day weekend trip to Santa Cruz. Me and Dad played Pasatiempo all three days. He was a much better player than me and he loved it too. Brings back good memories. Great video. Oh! This is the course Julie Inkster played growing up, her childhood home backed up to one of the holes.

What a fantastic golf course and club. Probably the longest 6500 yard course I've played. Many uphill approaches.

I never get tired of these guides. And if you want to play a MacKenzie course, Northwood GC up in Monte Rio, CA is amazing.

Was lucky enough to play here in 2019 when visiting from Scotland after hearing Andy and the NLU guys raving about it. The best course I've played outside Scotland. The video really captures what makes it special!

This is so sick. I remember watching the Tourist Sauce EP at Pasatiempo and thinking, why are these guys raving so hard about this course. Well, now I know. Massive kudos to whoever is whipping up these illustrations and visuals.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your analysis of MacKenzie's brilliant routing. Only played it once, was awestruck & mystified the entire round. Am going back in November to play 36 more, your video really has the juices flowing and I can't wait to get back on the property.

Thanks for this. It brought back wonderful memories of a round a few years back. I’m a mid-handicap hack, but I shot a respectable 89 with a shaky swing that day. The pro shop paired three public golfers with a member’s son. He was home from college for the holidays. He gave us lines off the tees, areas to stay out of, areas of the greens to shoot for, and general slope info in the greens. He was worth 5-10 stokes off my score. Nice young man, too. The guys in the pro shop had superb customer service. They treated outside golfers superbly. The tee shot on 16 just blew my mind. Just a wonderful experience and worth every penny.

It is incredibly disappointing that only ~370 people have liked this. The appreciation of golf architecture has a long, long way to go.

Drink every time they say Barranca. But seriously, I remember playing this course on one of the first golf video games. I always dreamed about playing it in real life. Thanks for another great video!

Great video guys. I'd like to see an article soon about what TFE would suggest could be improved at Pasa to make it an even better course than it already is. This is my favorite course by far. Keep up the great work!

I played here a few years back. It was in awful shape due to the drought. Going back next week, hopefully it lives up to the hype. The design is undeniable.

Yeah pasa looks super! A must play for sure in California. But the rough between the bunkers and the greens does my head in though...and I'm worried if you two guys came to the Melbourne Sandbelt you might not go home again...if ya need peak Mackenzie this is the place my hometown 🤠🇦🇺

Beautiful video! Question: when you say Pasatiempo and Sharp Park are the only publicly available Mackenzie courses, are you intentionally leaving out Haggin Oaks in Sacramento because of some redesigns over the years?

So is the proposed "restoration" of the greens going to be good or bad? I mean, they are original Mac greens correct? Has anyone seen the plans?

Andy, are you somewhat concerned with running into or crossing paths with Pat Perez? and if so are you above pulling his hair if necessary?
