- This is my first How To DIY video! I show how I kill rust and restore a Chevy Artillery wheel. Check it out, you won't believe your eyes! No chemicals necessary! Just 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% water!
I love that method. I have a couple of 1940 Ford wheels in the brew right now. I'm going 100% vinegar, it shaves off a couple of days. Years ago, I took some 36 Ford 3 window coupe doors and submersed them, came out great, inside and out.
I am witness, I did it with my B2000 rims for 1 week and is unbelievable how it looks, 100% recommended.
You should use the Vinagar 100%.
After you rinse you must Neutralize the Vinegar.. Put the part in the tub again with clean water and a box of baking soda and let sit for 20 min...then rinse.
If you don't the Vinegar will keep eating the part even though you rinsed it off..i been doing this for 10 years now....
How long would it take to do the rim with straight vinegar? And how big of a box of baking soda? Thanx
I was going to ask about using it 100%...
Same as warrior... I'd like to know more details on duration and so on...
Thanks in advance.
Hell yeah!!! That was satisfying. Lol. Thank you for the video.
Chuck gravel in with the rim to save a bottle of vinegar
Thanks for the technique, I just picked up a set of 15” arts for my 38 Chevrolet sedan. I was using a drill and wire wheels removing too much material in addition to the rust. I am going to use your technique, less destructive for my 1938 artillery’s and I will apply this to rear quarter window vents I have on the way too. Thanks again
That is amazing can't believe just the acid in vinegar does a job like that going to try it thanks for the vid
Good job and good video. Don't throw the water/vinegar out, you can use it to kill the weeds in the garden/driveway. Keep up the good work.
Brown painted rim....vinegar lifts the paint. Definitely does a good job. Glass bead cabinet...20 minutes....soft finish, all markings visible and un damaged...dry and ready for primer and paint....or powder coat.
WOW! I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS VIDEO BROTHER. I HAVE A SET AND I AM GOING TO DO THIS TO THEM. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING AND HAVE A BLESSED ONE!

If paint is peeling off I think that is a good thing not bad. Just another benefit. Cheapest paint remover I.ve seen and not toxic. Very impressive.
I used a minimum amount of vinegar by placing the wheel into a heavy duty garbage bag wrapped tightly around the wheel and tied at the top. This also reduces evaporation.
.
Good suggestion, lostallmymirth. Why don't other rust-restorers use this method ? So far I have not seen others using it.
This is so unbelievably smart, Im trying to derust a propane tank and I was in despair about the amount of vinegar I'd need but this makes it feasible now! Thank you
This is awesome. This formula works. Thank you very much for sharing this secret with us.
Good technique, good ingredients, n good vibes!!... you're da man, bro!! lv u..
Got to be a Wow for that. Nice video, great advice and result.
That's pretty good thanks for sharing !!!
going to try on my camaro rims now!
never seen this before, cool trick, thanks
500 hundred hatters and climbing!! This is awesome bro! Go Raiders!
Very impressive!
Wow 😯 amazing.saves a lot of time.
Thanks for this video... How simple is that and without having to grind, sand, scrub the rust off!
As has been said before, I'd like to know about using the vinegar at 100%???
Good shit mate you got it well done
OUTSTANDING ! Thank you ! 5/16/18 SPOKANE WA !!!
Guauuu, it's incredible,,, thanks for the tip...
More useful video..thanx..waitng for nxt video..
Go Raiders! Raider Nation for Life. Thanks for the video.
Dang!! That is impressive!! Thanks and i5 will try it out.
How do you seal the metal from fusting again? Clear coat.?
YOU HAVE DONE GREAT BY SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Good as new.
Great job
Nice! Purple Power works immediately
Is it removing paint as well? Any recommendations? Should I remove paint first before doing something like this?
What!! That’s awesome
Well then! You did that man!
I'm now going to submerge the chassis of the Classic 1955 Series 1 Landrover I bought today in vinegar!
Thank you very much
so what do u recommended putting on the wheel or piece that one would be working on. is there a bear metal sealer one would use to protect the metal before paint or powder?
in my experience electrolysis or the works toilet bowl cleaner are a lot more effective, but in any of them you will need to add a flash rust inhibitor such as wd-40, or baking soda, etc, and be sure to have adequate ventilation
I get what you're saying with "No chemicals necessary!," but it's still very difficult to refrain from further commenting on it! Awesome video, btw.
I also like the electrolysis method.
Thx bro great video thank you
amazing
Add molasses as well it's great!
After the process does the metal flash rust straight away or do you have some time before the coating process can begin.
Don't soak any ferrous metal in acid due to hydrogen embrittlement. That wheel won't do you any good if it breaks under load. There are other products specifically made for rust removal or get a blasting cabinet.
I'm making a cowboy cooker and have a rusty plow disk that I put in a pan of distilled vinegar. I can rub my finger across is after 4 days and the rust rubs off and I see black steel. No grinding so no grinding off metal. I will leave it soaking for another 3 days and then take it to the carwash and pressure hose it clean to get the vinegar off. This plow disc was rusty AF and I don't own a grinder so I believe I will be able to clean it off with a wire brush. I didn't think it would work but after watching this video I figured why not try a cheap home remedy. Cheapest place to buy distilled vinegar is Walmart or if you have Foods 4 Less in your area. Less than $4 a gallon or the 2 pan at Sam's Club or Costco is dirt cheap.
Thank you.
Think I will try this on my 46 chevy.
What do you spray on it afterwards to protect it cause it'll start rusting again right away correct? Thx.
I need to find a big enough tub to put my VW Splitty in! 😅
Wawo
Plastic 55 gallon drum cut down to size. Maybe a 35 gallon plastic would do.
Bravo!!!!! 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Hi power laser will do the job as well, if you manage to borrow 1.
awesome
That is amazing! Can't wait to try it!
wow!!!
Thanks!!
I was in ultimate shock.😲😲😲
Would this work with painted over (Rust oleum Rust Reformer) rust, take the paint and the rust off?
What did u put on it to make it shine before you painted it because it looked like you put a coat of finish.
If I we're to do like 1/4 water 3/4 vinegar is it safe enough to remove the rust faster than 7-8 days?
good
Vinegar is an acid so it would work.
Use the P-laser to remove rust.
Ka L where can you get one
Thanks
After you took it out of the tub and washed it off it didn’t get surface rust ?
Bravo
Will it harm chrome ??
That was beautiful. I've heard about vinegar doing the trick but seeing is believing.
Nice that is an awesome way to remove the rust that's for posting
Perron muy bien
That rim looks galvanized... and the rust looked like paint peeling off of it...
@Tabourba That DOES look like the paint peeling off of the steel!! Not rust. Look at the first large pieces the he peels off, they are FLEXIBLE, obviously not rust, since rust is brittle! The best way to restore rusted steel and iron (think cast iron pots, skillets, etc) is to use a 12v battery charger, a plastic tank (like 55 or 60 gallon drum half, or whatever the item fits in...), washing soda, and a iron or steel electrode... this works like plating, but is actually doing something like reverse electrolysis of the rust...
can i keep my tyer on the wheel or will it get damaged after a week of being in the vinegar?
Have you tried this method with Chrome Rims? Was just wondering if the vinegar would hurt the chrome .
Do not do this with chrome rims. You can and will permanently destroy the finish. It should only be done on steel rims. There will be a chemical reaction and it could make the chrome fall or flake off.
This works with all rusty iron parts. Can heat up the water, and use a fishtank-bubbler to keep the water moving to increase time. Great vid! Dont forget to wash thourogly and treat bare metal fast, tends to rust quicker after this treatment. I use baking soda water to neutralize the acid..
Do you pour baking soda water on the bare metal?
Pure in Nature's Garden When using vinegar does not really require the baking soda if you wash well with water.
But mixing baking soda will neutralize all azids
The catch is cleaning afterwards...it flash rusts immediately and the rusty water stains EVERYTHING. You need to be careful with vast parts too as it’ll eat into the metal.
Damn bro thanks for this I’m restoring my 69’ c10 and the rims are like yours but I’d say a little bit worse I’m gonna buy a kid pool and fill it up with vinegar
You can use acidic masonry cleaners to descale metals fast. Just watch your eyes.
Can we use this liquid in a spray gun for bike with Aluminium Foil For Scrub ?
Reply me Sir :)
sir I have a honda brio inside door edges are rusted what would you recommend, please help me..
Rustoleum rust remover
Can I do this to a chrome wheel or will the chrome peel off ?
Anywhere the rust creeps under the chrome it Will flake off
Why 50-50? wouldnt you want the full strength of the vinegar to eat away every single rust particle?
Looks like there is still some rust, for the money and time a small sand blaster could do 4 wheels in a day then rinse with some phosphoric acid and water then prime.
And no risk of hydrogen embrittlement.
4in a day my blaster does 4 in an hour
Blaster equipment, blaster sand, = $$$$$$
Impressive.
👌💯
Very impressive, but you have to have patience.
Safe for chrome?
Thanks for the inspirational video. I'm currently doing same using 4 gals of Heinz vinegar and equal parts 4 gals of water. 8 gals is enough at 50/50 mix for one 15" steel wheel in 16-1/2" plastic tub. My plan is 1 week per wheel. x4 = 1 month. In response to other comments below, both vinegar and Oxalic acid will do this. Difference is Oxalic acid is a nasty chemical to pour into drain afterwards. Vinegar is more environmentally-friendly. Make sure not to leave steels items immersed for too long as the solution will eventually eat the metal completely. Suggest 1-2 weeks should be all you need. Immersion of more than 1 month could damage the metal. Soaking / rinsing in baking powder or other neutralizer is also a good idea. Cola will also react in a similar way. Vinegar seems to be best choice. I used 3 x 1.32 gal. jugs from Costco. Cost was $2.99 ea. or $9. for 3 jugs.
I have two wheels that were done this way but were never neutralized and painted afterward. They are a disaster, might be ruined. Will try to save them because they are rare and expensive.
Can u use the vinegar twice
It's only $2 a gallon. I wouldn't.
I've had a vinegar tank going for month, that shit was filthy but parts always came out clean.
MR. BRICK HEAD Sure you can. I pour mine through a paint strainer, even a colander works. It’ll be dirty looking and smelly but just dump in the jug and stash away. Electrolysis though is oh so much faster and much cheaper.
Yes you can. You can keep adding vinegar to it. Once your done pour it on the weeds. Makes a good weed killer.
v nice bos
seria mais fácil fazer um jateamento de areia mais rápido já poderia pintar
That is almost as good as laser cleaning but probably way cheaper!
Is that really works sir?? Please
Can you reuse the 50/50 vinegar solution?
Yes
A week lol.. so if i want to do all 4 wheels i need 4 tubs & 16 gallons of vinegar & wait a month.
You do realize that you math is off right? Because if you are going to do the 4 wheels at the same time, then you need to wait only a week and not a month.
xNeFShARkx
I actually didn't untill you pointed it out. I stand corrected:)
How do you still stand correct?? Wtf????? If you are going to use 4 tubs then thats mean that you are going to treat all 4 wheels at the same time! So, because of this you will only need to wait a week and not a month!!! You are still wrong.
xNeFShARkx
I said i stand correcTED. That means you corrected me.
Oh, dam I've read it too fast haha. I saw correct, instead of corrected haha
Waste of vinegar and water. Just vinegar, by itself would have been better in half the time. Also, that extra 3-4 inches of depth is wasted water and vinegar. Better be ready to paint as soon as it dries. That clean surface is ready for primer/paint or rust; whatever gets there first.
Thanks for posting but derusting using electrolysis better and faster. Who wants to wait a week or more is just to long to wait. Using electrolysis it also Neutralize the rust. All you need is 12volt battery charger and a tub of water along with arm and hammer washing soda (not baking soda).
thankyou saved me 5bills on a set of 4...
That 🤖
Somewhere in that pile of rust is a date code stamp I forget where they usually put it but I thought that was cool. I am doing a 49 3100
Fuck yeah
wow 8D
