  • In an effort to salvage a video I came out with this one. I have been messing with a screen recorder on my Autel 908 and it really messed up on the first vid to the point it just wasn't usable. Needless to say I drag you along for "Part 2" and try to salvage what I can. Oh well, some days you get the bear and some day the bear gets you. -Enjoy!

Hi Eric, After the injector swap and you fired the engine and reviewed the scanner info, you mentioned the slightly negative fuel trim averages and theorized that vapor pulled into the pvc system from fuel contaminated oil was likely he reason. Brilliant. Information like that is another reason as to why I follow your channel. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your vast depth of knowledge. I began my learning 60 years ago in the pages of my beloved HotRod magazine. I still read it (Street Rodder et. al. have just been cancelled as a print media, sadly) and for some years now CZcams has been a huge contributor to my continued attempt to learn. I recently had a sudden dead cylinder misfire issue with my '06 G6 V6. Got a P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) along with the flashing CEL and lean codes. Went through troubleshooting steps: swapped plugs and wires between cylinders, checked spark with inline tester, checked compression on that cylinder (was 190-200PSI). Was looking like a fuel delivery issue. Tested the injector coil resistance and it was good. Checked as much wiring as I could and nothing seemed amiss. Checked the signal from the ECM to the injector and it looked good. All evidence was pointing to a clogged or stuck closed injector.
I replaced the faulty injector (new bottom o-rings for all the others too) along with plugs and wires for good measure. Was a bit of a job due to having to remove the top intake plenum and everything in the way. Got it all buttoned back up and that fixed it :)

My 2003 silverado ss 6.0 LQ9 has similar issue. Spits and sputters. Drives ok for a minute and backfires and pops the next. Had a few local guys try to diagnose the issue and it still hasn't been diagnosed. Has random misfire code. Has codes for running rich and codes for running lean. Just frustrating to keep spending money for people to not figure out this issue. And I have a beautiful truck sitting in the garage that I can't even drive. Once again. Awesome job the people in your area hopefully realize how nice it is to have you for such issue. Stay healthy and stay positive

Gotta like the way the scope recorded the results, at about 6:21, and it was helpful to see how you had the pressure sensor attached later. Of course the slight variance in the pause between each test doesn't make any difference, since the duration of each 'on' time was identical. Cool to see the test automatically boosted rail pressure to exact baseline before each cylinder test. Excellent point about how excessive fuel in one cylinder causes lean misfires on the rest of the bank. It is so nice to see another SMA video!

So crazy other mechanics don’t use the tools you do to diagnose issues, I took one automotive class in college and learned how to diagnose issues like this with an o scope.
My open lab teacher also told me to “not dry hump my injectors”. People who don’t know how to diagnose things end up throwing parts at it, “why don’t you change them all” ? Sometimes it’s not worth it sometimes it is, sometimes - if ain’t broke don’t fix it!

Interesting that you should post this. I just had an 06 2500 w a 5.3 that had been to 3 shops for a rich code that they couldn't figure out. They replaced o2s, pump, MAF, and oddly enough, intake o rings. Shop before them did coils on bank 2 and full ignition tune up. The 3rd was talking about a new ecm. When I got it, every cyl. on bank 2 showed misfires in history, but only 8 was current. I used my old school Snapper fuel pressure gauge with the scan tool hooked up and ran the balance test. #8 showed a 12 psi difference as opposed to the rest. Honestly, I'd not seen this style injector fail like this before, so your vid is definitely worth watching!

I just bought a used 2018 GMC Sierra so another reason to watch. Days after I bought it the fuel pump died and they replaced it under warranty. The truck was acting up when I took it in and when they did a test drive it completely died on them and they had to have it towed back to the garage.

Wait 24 hours and then no more slipping. Plan B is to purchase a work platform (about 12 x 30 inches) with rubber tipped legs made by Werner (not a sponser). Missed ya over the holidays. Hope your family had a nice Christmas. Good to get my SMA fix again on the big 5.3 chev-err-lay. Someone didn`t lube those o-rings...and gorilla`d the injectors in which tore the o-rings. Nice job Prof. O. Happy New Year SMA family. Be safe...God Bless.

Nice job, Eric. I don't know what GM's tolerance spec is for the variation between injectors, but i do agree that if it's running good and there are no codes, then it's fixed. If the pcm is happy, it's all good. I'll have to remember that about using dielectric grease the next time i have to remove and install injectors. Most of the time, it's usually specified to use clean engine oil. Thank you for taking the time to make another video, this stuff is helpful even to people that have been in the business for a long time.

Just goes to show how accurate that balance test is. PCM was pulling back 21% on the bank 2 fuel. The #6 injector flowed 6 p.s.i. more than the others which is 20% of 30. Excellent diag Dr. O.

Every now and then my money light comes on, i then check the codes and its 304 again, i then replace fuel injector and all other necessary things pertaining to it. I clear the codes run it for a week then the money light comes back on with the same old 304 on the number 4 cylinder on the v six 2006 jeep liberty. I am now considering the lifter to possible be bad causing a slow release of exhaust or not closing all the way in turn making it idle just a little ruff on that cylinder. some times the money light will go off for a week or two and then randomly come back on with the code of 304 on #4. Your videos help a lot in understanding the operations of things so thank you for taking the time for us to learn !

It looked like who ever was messing with the injectors was so close to figuring it out. I’m guessing they didn’t have a scanner to to watch the cylinder misfire move cylinders when they swapped the injectors.

Great diagnosis as always! Im a very old school tech. and even after diagnosing and correcting the problem Id still check a few spark plugs. Its just SOP for me like going to a doctor and checking temp. and blood pressure. With my luck, customer would be back in 2 months screaming warranty only to find the plugs had 100,000+ miles. Im still an analog guy adjusting to a digital world.

Just something I noticed, each sides fuel pressure drop was even on bank 1 and bank 2. All the even side pressure lined up to each other and all the odds lined up to each other... just a random observation. Keep up the great videos man.
