Apply some of your buttercream frosting on the cake board, then stack your cake and decorate on the cake board, then transfer to the cake plate.
@@charmanerichards7652 if not using buttercream, you can also use a dab of melted chocolate.

I just tried this and it works like a charm! Shame I can’t add a photo but it looked fab, especially when dusted with a bit of edible gold dust.
I did this for a cake at my bakery. We don't do chcolate garnishes, but I think it might be my specialty! ♡
