- Alright guys, we're finally past the marathon of arbor press videos - time for a new project! Today we're working on an untested Miller CP-300 that we picked up on faith at auction and getting it stripped down, removing the old welding leads, replacing the MIG gun, giving it a new regulator, and more - and as can often be the case, things may not all go as planned. Stay tuned to see what happens in this welder repair and how we handle it!

Glad you are happy with my recommendation. I've had many trouble free years with my machines. But do yourself a favor, throw that dual shield crap in the dumpster and get some solid wire and C10. Your lungs will thank you.

Van that bar at 27:05 is the cable strain relief, all your leads should pass up thru it then connect to the lugs. Your are smart enough not to tug on the cables but its a good ideal to use it. All in all you made a great buy on that top of the line Miller, I enjoyed the video on getting it up and running!✔

When you were explaining how the smart board works I immediately began wondering “Wouldn’t the reason why the gas isn’t flowing be because you were testing it with pulling the trigger while feeding wire and thus w/o striking an arc?”
BUT since the relay was bad on the board you were never gonna be able to strike that arc so NICE PERSEVERANCE! I’m impressed Miller Support was willing to talk you through diagnostic over the phone for one of their products that’s 30+ years old.
I think a lot of people forget they CAN CALL a manufacturer and not just search google but also forget that for a company to maintain Service & Support you need people who actually understand the inner workings of the product AND CAN COMMUNICATE it to you.
Could the reason for the welder being auctioned off come down to something as simple as a failed 20cent relay?😅

The 1ga wire is large than the 2ga wire runs backwards on Amp size
At 50ft cable the 2ga is rated at 200amp the 1ga is rated at 250 amps
My mistake I must have misspoke then the wire I replaced was one size larger than what came off.
He had 1/0 on the welder and replaced with 2/0. Not 1ga and 2ga. Figured out what he meant after I saw the wire size
He meant to say "double ought." I saw the label on the cable and it is indeed double ought.
I was only half watching while cooking dinner but when I heard him say this, I came to the comments to check that someone had checked we weren't about to blow some fuses.

The bar under the lug connectors is a strain relief. It may not be necessary in this application where the cable is actually running to the feeder. But, the work clamp might benefit front having the cable pass under that bar.

Excellent job as usual. I’ve rebuilt a couple large heavy duty welders that I got for a song. One was a 30 year old ESAB and what an amazing welder. The other was a Miller 35, one of the first mig welders Miller made some 40 years ago. Those old welders just work. My current welders are an HTP 220 mig and the HTP Invertig, both good welders and take up little space. I really enjoy spray transfer on the mig.
Those are excellent machines. I like my invertig 220.

That had to be damn satisfying to fix that board for pennies vs. $700-1000! In our throw away society, it's certainly nice to FIX something vs. scrapping it.
It appears to be a well built USA made, heavy duty welder that should provide years of further use.

Peg a wad of felt around the wire just prior to the drive rolls, this will strip all the accumulated dust and dirt off the wire keeping your liner and welds cleaner. I replace the felt every spool and hood my spool, easy hack but effective if you park the welder for more then a day.

I think that contactor [8:41] is a "definite purpose" one, which is technically intended for HVAC equipment- they are less expensive as a result. It was probably intended to have wires put straight into them, rather than having those terminals, which is why they didn't fit well. I don't know if that makes any difference though. Probably not?

WOW again. You have many similarities with a Swiss Army knife. So you can see that recycling is a great alternative to buying new again and again. Moreover, it is a challenge to get it operational again. Big greetings from the Netherlands.

I bought a Linde Mig Welder about 15 years ago or more....same setup 3 PH Mig welder unit on top etc... 100% Duty Cycle...for $300 ( 🇨🇦 ) from a Farmer ( who bought it off an auction and didn't have 3 PH ) ...i had 3 Phase in the city shop i rented...worked Awesome ( had Pro Welders test ut and they liked it.... I added a Spool Gun for Aluminum welding ( Pro-Fax adaptor and Old style Spool Gun...) that worked great too... i moved about 15 years ago outside city to my acreage and had to sell it ( no 3 PH here )...i looked at getting 3 PH out of 1 PH but decided it was not worth the expense... sold just the Welder / Mig setup for $400... kept the Long Power Cird i made and Spool Gun and even the Fugly homemade Welder Cart ( i can adapt it for something later ).... so no real loss $$... sure enjoyed the short time i used it ( 1.5 yrs approx..) I still wonder if i kept the Mig Part i might have had a use one day? The Spool gun will be used soon again...i got a Miller Gas Welder i can setup or maybe find a 1 PH Mig Welder for it ( i have a smaller mig i never tried it on ( Lincoln 175SP )... it worked perfectly from the day i wired it up...and was a Solid unit...
The old units are the best. My previous shop was single phase. I feel your pain there.
CP 300s are solid machines. As much as I like inverter welders I am still old school and like the transformer machines. They just run smoother in my opinion. Good fix on the feeder. Just FYI the 1/4” round bar bracket just below the terminals on the machine is essentially a cable management system slash strain relief. Nice work on the repairs. As far as the dual shield, I am a huge fan of it especially if you are going to do any structural steel. That is the main wire I ran in all of my fab shops. Another shop tour may be in order once you get some more of that old iron online.

Unfortunately I own a small gasless welder and it’s all about money, I can’t make it positive earth as it’s hard wired but when you can only afford the cheapest welder you can’t expect good welds, it sucks that unless you have money everything is hard, I am 58yo worked all my life but lost everything to the ex, I am still paying credit cards off and can’t work and my only income is a disability pensions due to chronic back pain , Life is hard , I look at these old welders and dream, the old welders are so good but very expensive. Glad you got a great machine there that’s going to last you many year. zGod bless You , regards Andy

Pretty common with Miller for the boards to go bad.

I appreciate it. My luck is average maybe bad lol. But I work hard. So in that way I make my own luck.
Bypass the gas flow delay, will end you up white a pit at the end of te weld. I wouldn't want that. But $700 is a lot of money. Ardunio could be your friend here.

The item needed at 8:42 for the wires on the disconnect is a wire sleeve. Wire sleeves are thin copper and deform to the terminal connector.
Edit: Had a typo, it's called a wire ferrule not wire sleeve.

Hey Van. Great video. I was just wondering if those leads from the welder are suppose to go through that retention loop just below the welding leads? It kinda looks like it.

Nice machine, is it true they can be wired single or 3 phase? Always wanted a power source and a dual feeder like we have at work,with solid wire on one side and gas shield Flux on the other. but a pricey piece. great video, was hoping to see the weld cart build.

You never want to use plumber's flux on electronics because it will corrode the board and eat at the board

Awesome restore but why use gas if you use fluxed wire?

Try to get a rebuilt board. I have a Miller MC 300 VS. The feeder. is a Miller. Four roller feeder. The thing has two guns. you can run one gun at a time.
The board is fixed now. 4 roller would be nice tho
Van the inching switch should NOT open the gas valve. I think that arc saftey will not allow the gas valve to open unless you have the welding ground cable conencted and you are actualy welding. You seem to have fixed it with the new part.

If you got tips for that welder but they are too small...just drill one out to test your bigger wire....it just has to be close and a clean hole so it doesn't snag or drag on wire...

You don't need to hemorrhage cash to Miller/ITW for a new main circuit board as there are several board repair businesses that will fix your old board. I had my Miller Synchrowave 350's main board repaired in 2022 for about $200.
That’s cheap yeah the quotes I got were like 400-600 on the one I had for repair

There was a comment by another viewer against dual shield wire I can't agree with. While it's probably true not all flux-cored wire used with gas are great, Hobart's FabCO_XL-525 is certainly worth trying out.
At 9:30 that's a magnetic container. Looks like a 40 amp 3 pole just an FYI.

friend i bought the same machine with s-52e feeder and i will make maintenance like you is from an auction, i like to know what is the newest torch gun that i can put it?
I think all miller style guns would work you just may need to modify the electrical connection w a pigtail
right now i check the welder everything works the feeder the gas out the tiger of torch but no make the arc😢
@@brandonvidal3636 it’s probably an issue w the feeder. I had the same issue. No arc until I replaced the feeder board then it worked. Does the s-52 have a circuit board
@@VanoverMachineAndRepair i found the issue, in the wire diagram is the 16b R2, is a ceramic resistor that convert the 110v ac to 24v ac to activate a 24 v relay, the resistor is burn and I don't know the exact value of ohm and watts to replace it, maybe your welder have it, to know the value
