Today we have a 2014 Chevy Sonic with a P0016 code for Camshaft Position. I decided to make a video showing how to clean out the cam phaser valves and how to test the actuators electronically and mechanically. All you will need is some simple hand tools and a multimeter.
This is something I would try before I condemn the timing chain and related system. It is much quicker to do this than to pull the valve cover and timing cover. Sludge or debris can clog this system up and cause the codes listed above. Also note, this vehicle was pretty clean and well maintained, so this actually isn't the issue with this car. I will be adding a timing chain video later, as this car has an issue with the intake cam out of time. If I had to do it again, I would still have done this before going any deeper.
Let me know if this fixes your issue, and thanks so much for watching!

If this didn’t work for you, you will most likely need to change out the timing chain and all the components. I have a very detailed video on how to do that here: czcams.com/video/Agbsanjq_jA/video.html
Very informative,easy to understand
Man this video was AWESOME & FULL OF INFO. Thank you Sir. Great job
Thanks for watching Kevin!
Yes you can buy the seals separately , one per package so get two. I would replace the rubber seals regardless of the condition of the old one, cheap insurance. Make sure to note when you take the old seal off which side goes towards the actuator as the seal actually has one side that is slightly different than the other. Brake cleaner is great stuff but wouldn’t MAF Sensor cleaner be better to use in this case because it doesn’t leave any “ residue “ and you don’t want to chance it with these vital parts.
A very good teaching video and i will do as you say, its a 1.4 non turbo GM car, so thank you from Cheshire UK.
Thanks for watching!
Nice advice I've done this several times budd ...it does work...but sometimes it's a lil bit more but awesome information budd... changing the oil is a big one.
Thanks for watching!
Wow, great tutorial! More please
Thanks for watching Albert!
Great video. Thank you very much.
I put a new time in about oil change make sure everything was on right the way it's supposed to be reset the code in the p016 keeps coming back camshaft sensor replace camshaft sensor reset the code and still coming back been like that for years now it runs great thank God for that
Thanks for the video - I was always wondering how these worked on my car specifically. I can't say I've seen this type outside the GM 1.4L turbo engine. Lots of vids for the 1.8L engine but not this one. What's your experience with regards to exhaust vs intake ratio of problems? Is one more common than the other. I think I have seen many exhaust videos for the 2.$L gm ecotech. Just wondering if you seen any trends. Great job at explaining. ++ Subscribed.
Good video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Hello sir , does the camshaft sprocket have timing mark ? Because I disconnect the sprocket from camshaft can you give an idea how to set it back the sprocket to the camshaft . Thank you Sir for your CZcams channel it’s help me a lot . God bless you sir
Hi Mr. B, Thanks for the detailed video, excellent effort. My girlfriend just took herself out and bought a 2016 Holden Astra...aka (ASTRO Girl) She is very capable, as I teach her and she loves to learn all about her cars...
I had a heart attack thinking it had the LUJ/LUV 1.4 Turbo... not an engine I would remotely want or laud about,.
However it was the LE2 engine...a somewhat completely sorted powerplant.
Now, may I suggest the title or explanation about your work mention whether it is a Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged DOHC I4 LE2 or the LUJ/LUV series engine. This eases confusion for YOUR World audience. FYI, to date I have seen little to zero complaints on the LE2 engine...do you have any advice on known problems with the LE2 engine?
Thank you in advance. Keep up the good work.
Well what else should I try because I did the timing chain and guides and cleaned everything from this video. I am at a loss any help would be appreciated
Why is mine stuck? I can only get the cylinder, o-shape clip, and spring out. But not the assembly with the filter.
Just use some marvel mystery oil and every 4 tanks use 93 once a year use 1 can of berrymans kemtool 12 300 grand
I likelE dU nEd timing chain.. bt in the mEntIm.. wat makesU think the oil fluency effects the rotation speed of the exaust or intake camshafts?(not sayng U R rong).. this makes me wanna try that maroon oil treatment stuff(well known but forget name)✋😒
2012 kia sorento crank no start code came up P0076 P0079 p0031 p0445 p0091 p0037 what to check
What was the running issue with the car prior to this, or was it just the code ? I’ve got the P0017 on the same engine. I took the rocker cover off and the chain doesn’t appear to be slack up top anyway. The symptoms I have are sluggish on power and throaty engine note. Thanks
Did you found out what is the issue?
Yeah I did. It was the timing chain that need replaced after all. I stripped it and found the long guide on the exhaust side broken. I lined the timing up and the exhaust camshaft was out a tooth. All sorted now, I fitted a full chain kit last week.
Thanks, glad you sorted it. I do not have any codes, just throaty (louder) engine than before. I was thinking to clean the valves first.
You kickass!!!! My clip was broken! 60,000 miles! I subscribed right on the spot lol
Glad I could hel!
i got a vauxhall insignia 2016 showing p0016. Same steps you reckon?
It is worth a try
Hello, will this work for a P0011..? I have a real short rattle at a cold start and a P0011 but no CEL. Or is there another solution? I want to try everything before I replace the full timing chain and everything around.
You can try that
@@AutoScholarwithMrB When I replaced the valve cover (pcv was done and oil leak) I noticed the upper timing guide had a loose bolt, tightened it, code is gone, rattle unfortunately not, chain has almost no slack, but it still rattles and on a warm start it has some weird clunk... I'm clueless so I'm thinking just the whole timing has to be replaced.
@@jarno6870 probably will need the chain, unfortunately. I have a really good video on that as well here: czcams.com/video/Agbsanjq_jA/video.html
@@AutoScholarwithMrB yes, great video, will use it as a reference when ill have enough courage to do the joh myself haha, thanks!
Will this cause a rough idle ?
I had a 0016 then replaced the sensor . Now I have a 0017 . Idles rough still
I don’t have any vacuum leaks . Car has like 125k miles . It doesn’t misfire when brake torquing
what happens when you just have p0017 by itself? i have that on my 2008 e350 mercedes
I’m not sure what the next move is on a Mercedes.
How do check voltage on those ?
These are pulse width modulated, so a lab scope

What type of cleaner
Brake or carb cleaner works well
