- "The Phantom of the Opera" had its final performance April 16, after 35 years on Broadway. Playbill was there to capture the curtain call of the event, which included speeches from producer Cameron Mackintosh and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The curtain call ended with everyone on stage singing "Music of the Night," as photos of former actors that played the Phantom and Christine were projected on stage.

I feel so bad for Ben Crawford. I'm sure he wanted more than anything to perform for that last show, it must have been hard to be unable to go on and still have to put on a smile. Hoping he gets the chance to play this role when the show comes back, he's fantastic!
@lairdmackintosh admires Big Ben's @crawdady22 fortitude and artistry. He would have only sung the role if he knew he could do it justice. He stepped aside for the greater good and to be well to sing another day.
It’s not coming back.
@@bekarice6600 The most successful musical of all time? Produced by notorious money lover CamMack? It's obviously coming back.
It will 100% be back--probably in less than a year. I’m sure they already have contracts in place. But it will be with a much smaller orchestra.
@@bekarice6600 Andrew has already said that it will come back to New York. Though it will be a downsized production to the staging, cast, crew and orchestra… Probably a lot like the one in London right now
The dedication to Andrew's son has me bawling like a baby. That was beautiful
Forced diversity killed it
Everyone singing Music of the Night towards the end had me sobbing.
the power of his music of the night!
So beautiful that Andrew can not let Sarah's hand go. He is clearly in love with her and always will be, after all, she was his muse to write the phantom of the Opera.
I think hes just panicking, so Sarah is calming him. But it’s very cute to see them holding hands a lot 😅
@MoiEilelA well if you notice at different shows and events the way he watches her you will get what I am saying.
@@Hecate33 😅interesting… so you’d think he regret cheating on her and divorcing her😂 all these years even with 3 kids after. I mean yeah she’s his muse. Oh and yeah Sarah’s pretty hot for her age, I am sure any ex boyfriend still wants her.
Sadly forced diversity killed it
RIP Nicholas 'Nick' A. Lloyd Webber

Thank you for the music.
It was wonderful to see Sarah support a visibly griefstricken Andrew… She was not Nicks mother but it is apparent that they were very close
@@rickardnyberg4899 Sarah was their stepmom when they’re just young. She recalled a time when Andrew was grumpy and Nick and Imogen would ran to Sarah’s room for comfort.
@@rickardnyberg4899 yes Rickard I thought the same actually. It's rare when you see a former spouse able to remain friends as have ALW and Sarah Brightman all these years later. The mutual affection and respect is definitely still very strong. Honestly I think that it is quite wonderful Andrew's wife (and mother of his children) supports the mutual ongoing friendship. Wonderful to see especially now in his time of grief losing Nick (and the last ever shows of POTA), all in the same time period. My heart goes out to them all.
I love that Laird and John motioned for Ben to join them centre stage. That is genuine class right there!
I had the amazing good fortune of being there, what a night!
That must have been an absolute pleasure!! Do you know why Ben wasn’t able to preform?
Which phantom got the biggest applause? Was hard to see the names on the screen
@@Gabrielle_2022 I heard he was on vocal rest
@@TI_Tajador Thank you! I saw that he had an infection and had actually been out of the show since April 1st.
Love you Sarah Brightman always & forever~
The best Christine … I’m happy she was there 😊
I am so mad that I didn't get to see this on broadway. Hopefully, the show opens up again soon.
Same here, I’m with you. I had my chance 5 years ago, didn’t go for it, then Covid happened and that changed a lot. I can only hope they someday come back. 😢❤
Oh I have no doubt it'll be back
@@1Cheytown Broadway running costs for a show of this sizie ended uo at $800,000 a week ths year which was sadly the death knell for the show as it required almost full houses each performance which it was achieving. The show, the original, remains in London with a reduced orchestra.
@@williamgardiner2010 which is why u (along with many others) do believe that if a revival happens, it'll be on a smaller scale (i.e. smaller orchestra for one)
@Cheyenne Cook @w G Which obviously is far better than nothing, but still very disheartening as the power of the orchestra is so absolutely critical.
I don,t understand how the longest, most popular play can shut down.Phantom was the ICON of Broadway and NYC.I saw it 3 times. I remember walking past the Majestic going to school. Everytime you said Broadway you thought of Phantom. Broadway and NYC will never be the same again. Its just another nail in this once great city,s coffin.
The almost $1 million a week running costs I believe were not sustainable towards the end. They were losing an awful lot of money.
End the end it came down to $$$. This production was one of the (if not the) most expensive shows to put on and when the great white way went dark in 2020, Phantom never recouped the cost.
Everything comes to an end. I’m sure it will be revived in 10 years. I just hope the production is good, and not some weird, changed version like the one that tours around.
I would have loved to see it live, but I never got the chance. I have seen the 25th Anniversary of the Phantom on DVD.
Anyone else crying? 😭 What an iconic, historic, and beautiful musical. Definitely my favorite musical of all time, and I am devastated to see it go! It has had an incredible run though and I am so glad it broke records on both Broadway and in London. Hopefully it will be able to be revived on Broadway in the future! If it is, I am definitely going to see it! ❤
My late mother absolutely loved Phantom and my sister and I would listen to the Sarah Brightman version as little kids. I was able to see this masterpiece on Broadway and definitely made me feel like my mom was right next to me ❤
So sorry for your loss. Rest In Peace 🙏
Bring it back bring it back bring it back. Bring it back. Bring phantom on Broadway back. Bring it back. Bring it back Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I fell in Love with this production years ago. The story, characters and music. I Unfortunately never got the privilege to experience in person, but I can only hope, that in the near future the curtains will open up once more. Farewell for now, to one of the best Broadways. 🥺🎭 🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love how everyone cheer for their favourite Christine and Phantom!!
I got to finally see the show on Thursday night. This is the show that made me fall in love with theater. I love it so much and everyone was fabulous. Sad to see it go, but I expect to see it back on Broadway in 3 years for a revival
I never miss an opportunity to shout out my favorite Phantom, Franc D'Ambrosio. To me, he was the greatest. All those years in San Francisco, but all the love goes to Broadway.
Franc was AMAZUNG as the Phantom. I also got to see him at the Curran.
We attended the show at the Majestic about 10 years ago, it was beyond fantastic, a memory we will never forget.
I hope it comes back. It’s too timeless to shutdown. 😢
WHERE’S MICHAEL !!!!!!!!!! THE ORIGINAL and for some THE ONLY PHANTOM!! He took the genius of Andrew’s creation and gave it life. HE GAVE BIRTH TO THE PHANTOM. Some of Michael’s staging and little nuances that formed the character are still being done in performances to this day. He was and IS the Phantom. I really like many of the other Phantoms, especially JOJ, and Ramin but even they have tried to copy much of Michael’s style and movements ie: when Christine drops her veil, that was originally a mistake by Sarah but MC turned it into a tear-jerking moment when he picked it up, buried his face in it and sobbed. BTW, he always cried REAL tears in his performances. Not on cue but from really deep down getting into his character. Michael himself has said he really, truly loved the Phantom and pitied him. We all felt it. No matter how many times we saw it! I MISS HIM!!❤❤❤
I hope this show does a comeback
Ben Crawford deserves the role of being the Phantom of the Opera he has an amazing singing voice like you would never believe
I absolutely agree. It was unfortunate that he was sick the last couple weeks of the show so he couldn’t perform. Ben is a fantastic singer and I’m hoping he gets to play the role again in the future
The phantom will always be there inside our minds
Every time I went to Broadway, I could see "The Phantom of the Opera", and felt like performance would last forever. The arrival of the end was unexpected. There is only one reason why it ended. Declining audience. If we don't want to closing the performance, all we have to do is going to the theater constantly.
I don’t think it’s a declining audience that hurt Phantom-I think the rising cost of labor is what hurt them. To be clear, I believe that people deserve to be paid, but the huge orchestra is a major expense which is why the show will come back with it cut down. Which is tragic.
@@brittanyfischer1786 musical like "The Phantom of the Opera" costs a lot of money to produce. But it's not something that just started, it's something that's been going on for a long time. It’s reported even if the performance is resumed, there will be no ticket sales like before.
The severity of the hiatus during the epidemic may be a big factor.
best musical ever, period!
Well Done!!!! Will miss this musical. Powerful emotions!
The day after this, I sang “Music of the Night” at a bar in Brooklyn during their karaoke night. It felt apropos. 😊
Damn I’m crying
ITS OVER NOW THE SHOOOOW OF THE NIIIIIIGHT!! IM CRYING!!
Dear Ben Crawford, I just wanted to let you know that I prayed for you. I thought that you could use some prayer, and hopefully, you get to feeling better soon. Much love and respect to you. God bless you, Ben Crawford
Ugh!! I’m gonna miss it so much. 😢
Don’t worry, no doubt that it will come back. The Angel of music cannot die
Brilliant just freakin Brilliant.
The silence when child molester James Barbour's picture came up has given me incredible joy
So disappointed Ramin Karimloo was not recognized as one of the Phantoms. Sierra Boggess was but not him. I realize that their were many many Phantoms but he was GREAT. EVEN ORIGINATED, LOVE NEVER DIES.. The sequel to PHANTOM.
The slideshow was only Broadway Phantoms and Christines, as this is the closing night of the Broadway production. Ramin never played the Phantom in this production. Sierra got a mention because she was Broadway’s Christine in 2013.
I noticed that, I was bummed bc he is really my favorite Phantom along with Sierra being my favorite Christine. :(
@@naginoriette7857 Most definitely
Phantom's Broadway run may have come to an end, but I find it extremely hard to believe that it will never be performed anywhere ever again. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it does come back to Broadway someday.
My favorite broadway show and arguably one of the greatest of all time. I can’t believe it’s over. So heartbroken.
So glad I was able to see it ❤️
the silence for James Barbour 💀
Their biggest mistake was to cast him as Principal Phantom while Laird never got that chance
To me Michael Crawford was the best Phantom! His voice is ethereal! Without Michael Crawford, it just wasn’t the same!
Yep
I am so glad that I was able to watch this show in 2019 during my last trip to the US.
If i knew phantom of the opera was performed i would of booked. Just to see the performance. I jush found out, about the last performance through the news this morning. Hope they perform in the future.
I hope phantom will be coming back to Johannesburg south Africa i went to see it 4 times but if i could have gone every night i would have. I still believe its one of the BEST theatrical shows every made nothing could ever be as big and spectacular as phantom
My all time favorite
I went and saw this last december it was AMAZING!
I went a little over a year ago and only paid 59 dollars for the ticket including all fees. The closing was announced later that fall and ticket prices sky rocketed.
I love the absolute silence when James Barbour's name came on
I LOVE James Barbour so much. He is one of my absolute favorite Phantoms and stage actors. He has such a good singing voice and is such a good actor. And yes, I do know what he did which makes me hate him as a person. But as a singer and actor, he is so freakin amazing.
The elephant in the room- Michael Crawford’s absence.
He said on Twitter that he had to have an emergency dental surgery and was sad to miss, but still sent love to the company.
Michael lives in New Zealand and is 80 years old now. I’m sure he was there in spirit
I will really missed the phantom of the opera
BRAVO!
Keep phantom open a Broadway I want to see it this summer on Broadway
It'll be back. I think the reception it's closure has gotten is proof. Unfortunately it just fell victim to timing
Four words: A Live recording, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🥺🙏🏻
They did a 25Th anniversary recording
@@mercedezjones6974 that’s not what I mean.

No mention of Michael Crawford or Steve Barton😲I’m sorry but that’s just unforgivable and shocking. Those 2 men put in just as much work into their roles as Sarah Brightman did and they deserve better!
Agreed....especially Michael...the BEST Phantom ever
@@1Cheytown no other phantom nailed it like he did and no other Raoul nailed it like Steve Barton. Many men have tried and failed so thank goodness for the cast recording😁
@@amandanelson339 And you've seen them all to be able to make that judgement?
@@DistantCousin I didn’t need to see them all to make that judgment. Michael won a Tony for his performance in Phantom and Steve Barton is the only Raoul that made me take Raoul’s side when it came to Christine. They gave legendary performances and they’re the best.
I saw the phantom several times and was blessed to see Michael once. He was sublime and as the originator of the role should have. Wen mentioned. I was also sad that Ramin Karimloo was not there. One of the best phantoms
Am I the only one surprised Cameron *DIDN'T* mention people like *STEVE BARTON and REBECCA LUKER* in the memoriam section of his speech?
Puccini rose from the dead for the occasion to take credit for his motif from Fancuilla del West
😂👍🏻
if you're going to steal, steal from the best 😉
I’m still so pissed and sad that Broadway didn’t release a Live recording.
Ramon was my most favourite Phantom and gorgeous Michael Ball was my favourite Raoul
Love the Phantom the bestest show ever.
I will agree about BEN CRAWFORD and even Michael Crawford and evryone who gave so much to make PHANTOM the sensation that it was. But. like all great plays or MUSICALS, we need not worry! PHANTOM will be back, not in the very near future, but it will have a REVIVAL as it so richly deserves. A note about Sarah Brightman: I heard it was tough to get her as the lead Christine
on Broadway but I think Andrew LW made it clear, Phantom would not come to Broadway without her. I wasn't around then but I heard her glorious Christine. It's a damn pity the Tony Committee
did not nominate her for a Tony in 1988 as they did with Michael Crawford who did win the Tony as did Judy Kaye. I think there must have been some acrimony that an American was not the first Christine on Broadway (Transfers from London to Broadway and vice versa are so complicated and governed by many riles and regulations). In any case, Sarah did play Christine for over a year as did M. Crawford but Phantom lasted 34 more years. Sad to see it go. I thought it would go on forever, but it was time especially as the MAJESTIC needed a complete renovation that it will now get
with the sho's closing. After the long renovation, I only hope it will re-open as the MAJESTIC and not renaming this theater the HAL PRINCE. The Majestic (built in 1917) is too iconic to have its name changed. Yes, there should be a theater named after 21 time TONY WINNER HAL PRINCE, but choose a theater that doesn't have the history of the great MAJESTIC. I will be really sad if there's a name change as there have been too many Broadway name changes over the years. History is being forgotten and pushed to the side because someone donates a lot of money to Broadway and thus gets a theatre named after him...... and it's always a man. In Fall of 2023, a Broadway theater is going to be renamed the LENA HORNE..... so we have the Ethel Barrymore, the Helen Hayes, (Lunt)- Lynn Fontanne theater, we used to have the Virginia ....... but that's it. I don't thing any other theaters are named for women.
Bring the phantom back to Broadway
Omg!!!!!! Why are they closing down? How can this possibly be? The new generation will never know!! What's going on???????
How beautiful and special. 😇🥺😢 (ngl, I thought Sarah B. came out in Christine Daae's costume at first 😳)
Looks like everyone’s going to Denny’s now
Literally why are they closing down?? It was one of the most iconic musical and a steady cashcow of Broadway. Why??

No it (Phantom of the Opera) isn’t
Bravo!! 👏🏼👏🏼
No mention of Michael Crawford. Shameful. Saw the show with the original cast and probably a dozen times more over the years. How could they not recognize Michael Crawford. I just don't get it.
He hasn’t done much to pay tribute to the show… I mean yes he’s sung the songs at concerts and whatnot, but other than that he has to my knowledge done little to recognize any of the milestone moments that have occurred either during the shows time on Broadway or in London. Can’t understand why.
@@Mrnickstr89 Maybe he prefers to move on in his life. He was present for the 25th anniversary he might think at some point you let things go.
@@Mrnickstr89 He has been present on several jubilees in both London and NYC…. He may be feeling that he has done his part…
For this, he said he had to have emergency dental surgery. I guarantee he would have been there if not for surgery.
Why did it have to end? Y’all realize this was basically “thank you, you’re now unemployed” right?
So many reasons 😒 it didn’t have to . It was almost a million $ a week to run ticket sales dropped with the pandemic and didn’t come back up and even before then were slow . And basically lots of corporate greed . If it comes back it won’t be the same .
@@Fireinherveinzz needing for something to be economically valiuble and profitable isn't corporate greed it's a basic necessity. They know an hiatus will make a comeback all the more valuable.

No Charles Hart or Richard Stilgoe?!
They were unable to attend but they was mentioned
is Michael Crawford there?
He had to have dental surgery. He would have been there if not for that.
Who is the phantom?
This is the most supreme form of insincerity and shameless hypocrisy on the part of Cameron Mackintosh. Here he is heaping praise on a wonderful cast that he just fired because of the need for profit and a need to revamp to a cheaper watered down version as in the West End. He should have skipped the final night and given the night to the wonderful cast of the Phantom and its audience.
I understand how you feel. However, I saw an interview that Lloyd Webber recently did and he mentioned that it cost approx. $950,000 per week to keep the show going. There is talk that they might do a cheaper version of the show like the West End. I last saw the Phantom last year July and I noticed there were empty rows. The covid pandemic killed the Phantom. After Broadway reopened in Oct. 2021, costs went up and attendance was down. 2 months after I went, last year Sept, I think, they made the announcement that it was closing for good. I am a New Yorker - I am heartbroken that it's gone. So, I do know how you feel. ❤
People can hate him as much as they want… It doesn’t change the fact that The Phantom is the worlds most expensive musical theatre production that had been a loosing affair for a long time… If Musical Theatre is to survive at all, they need fo find affordable ways to continue
@@rickardnyberg4899 If Phantom was such an unprofitable losing enterprise why would it last in Broadway for 35 years? Out of the kindness and generosity of Cameron Mackintosh’s heart? The reality is the only way Mackintosh could terminate the unionized Broadway actors’ contracts and to improve his company’s bottomline is to cancel the entire show altogether. The only consideration is his business position and his business position alone. Not the Broadway cast. Not the audience. Profits alone - period
And it is also pure arrogance to show up on stage like - adding insult to injury - lamenting the death of a beloved production that he just effectively killed
@@jinzhang8241You are being extrenely intemperate. Can you name one producer who could sustaing costs that recently spirallaed to almost £1 million a week fof a show that has failling audiences. Rather than passing off the cuff remarks, I think the problem is actually the costs of putting on a Broadway show. Funny Girl had to really keep an eye on production coxts when it opened to poor reviews and collapsing audiences. Hence the re-boot with Lea Michele whcih saved the show.
