For me, JC Superstar is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, both the score and the lyrics. A hundred years from now, when the classics are talked about, this will be included.
It needs a re write. JCS is the best, but if it got the level of attention that the Phantom got for two decades it would evolve into something amazing. Could have extra songs added as well, there are other aspects of the religious story to tell

Perhaps that song writing demanded more from the individual singers than the later musicals which achieved more with the more complicated musical layering - in places particularly cats. Guess I'm just wanting more effort on JCS since I think it more deserving than the later musicals which is the opposite of what I have heard A L Webber saying about JCS.

say what you want to about Andrew Lloyd Webber but you have to admit that he aspired with Tim Rice to breathe new life into the dying world of musical theatre in the uk during the 60s and 70s. and they really did restore and revitalise the musical and I for one thank them for it. ok some of his latest work hasn't been great but musical theatre is alive and well and because of their contribution xxx I understand if you guys out there disagree. just my opinion xx

This is a wonderful documentary. I was in a different cultural orbit in these years and missed so much of what was happening in musical theater. This is like opening a door to a world I missed and I'm so grateful to explore it now. It's one of the strangely optimistic results of being locked up at home for an extended period of time, to find fresh experiences within cultural history like this amazing composer's fine work.
Sir ALW is a unique phenomenon, because in addition to being a musical Genius, he also created musicals that no one would have dared to do and They Worked!! I mean, a musical about the life of a humanized Jesus and a redeemed Judas, a musical about a locomotive on roller skates, a musical about the wife of a South American populist dictator, A music about a cult of stray cats. Only a musical genius could have made those topics a success.

Yet is highly doubtful that this is pure inspiration, given the amount of his works that sound so similar to other artists works. If you inspired once i believe you. But he has done it so many times that i can not believe that this is unintentional. If you read his wikipedia page you will see that some lawsuits were made against him, some of them were handled outside of court, without letting the public know. Possibly he paid the orginal artist with that 860millions he made...

As the pointed out in an interview with Stephen Colbert, he knows that writing lyrics isn't his strength. Finding the right collaborator is vital. As he said, a lyricist has a certain turn of phrase that he lacks.
He's a musical genius. I have seen Phantom on Broadway, 4th row center stage and was blown away. The chandelier dropped about 4 inches above my head an kept going to the orchestra pit. I own the DVD of the movie and watch it many times a year. It my absolute favorite!
Oh, and I saw Jesus Christ Super Star when it was a traveling company before it went to Broadway. And I also saw Cats when a traveling company can through here.
I thank him and Tim for reintroducing the sung-through musical. The operetta was such needed thing for musicals. Classical Operas have list their beauty and glamour with the mainstream, yet the concept of opera being magical entertainment will never end. You just have to make operas relaxant to your audience. Wow, seems as if he was clearly a childhood prodigy. JSSS was a huge culturally iconic sensation when I was a kid back in the 70’s. Then Phantom and of course Cats. I’ve even if late seen him playing tunes in a GORGEOUS piano while sheltering in place just this past few months during Covid 19. Thanks for the memories!
I sort of wonder why critics think a composer is obligated to make his works sound like they came from different composers. That's like asking a parent to produce kids that bear no resemblance to them. Nonsense to say Memory could work in Phantom though, what a bunch of hogwash.
That one is on Andrew, really-"Memory" ALMOST could have worked in the Phantom, but only because the song is so different from everything else in "Cats". This is probably inevitable if you are a) one man b) make a musical with all kinds of various songs. I think it is still interesting to watch this documentary made over 30 years ago. The Phantom of the Opera and Cats were hits but no one knew where Andrew Lloyd Webber's carreer would go and no one could tell whether the shows would be performed decades after their original runs. Now we know they were :) I saw the Moscow production of "Cats" in 2005 (or 2006). They still perform JCS in Stas Namin's theatre.

If you'd come today you would have reached a Whole Nation,... Israel in 4 BC, had No Mass Communication!!!! my favorite line in the rock opera...The electric guitars were so advanced so far-reaching into my very soul...that I probably the first 12-year-old girl in my Catholic grade school to forgive Judas and have a heart for him!!! the words and music could change my whole perception of the betrayal of Jesus and looking at Jesus and Judas in parallel perception...Thank you Sir Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice!

Already watched this on YT a few years ago. 😴 Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music/vocal score for his then-wife, Sarah Brightman's vocal range. We saw the Phantom (and Cats) at the 5th Avenue in dt Seattle with Sarah and Michael Crawford. They spent $11M to update the 5th Avenue for the Chandelier scene, etc. Both were amazing. Still have the Book and CD/Soundtracks, including the Making of from each.
It takes talent and guts to do musical theater. It is so easy to bomb. Really high risk projects; you need lots of expensive talent, and you earn it night by night. All the creators are heroes IMHO. So much easier to make a movie where you can tweak it in post production ad nauseum.
So they show many women singing I don't know how to love him. But not the woman who made it her own and sang it in the movie and on stage originally. Yvonne Elliman.

I thought I was having a Nelson Mandela Effect Experience until I found this documentary; I couldn't find it anywhere. I first saw it in 1989 on the Bravo Channel, when The Phantom of the Opera was famous onstage with Michael Crawford. The song that stuck out in my mind the most, though was, Any Dream Will Do, sung by the children.
Have seen JC Superstar live twice with Ted Nealy and Carl Anderson and love it, but my heart will always be with Cats. I've seen it 3 or 4 times live and a couple times on video. I know most or all of the words to be scores, lol.

I certainly agree with all the wonderful and accurate comments I read above.The Disney idea is a great idea. I have seen quite a few of his plays but missed Phantom and also Jesus Christ SS which I regret. My eyes certainly have been opened. I always sat and enjoyed the play without a thought of all the effort that preceded such a fabulous creation.I felt a special admiration for this wonderful man when he sat and entertained us each day during isolation.He was so calm and unassuming.Now that he is back in the theatre working I view him as the lightning that comes after the quiet before the storm.A true genious that deliver what people crave and don't even realize until they hear and see it.💖
Of course the album J C was more popular in the US, I remember how popular the Godspell' LP was around the same time. JC is a very different point of view.

If I understand the video, ALW says that By Jeeves failed because it did not "hang together" as it was a collection of short stories rather than a story, but in a way Cats was the same - a collection of poems. So I wonder why Cats was successful but By Jeeves was not.
I think if you rewatch you will see he was not specifying Jeeves itself by that remark. He did feel that Jeeves failure was caused by the book and staging. But his original score is a gem.

Yes, but Lionel had Oliver! and his others were not similar hits. Sandy Wilson had a hit with The Boyfriend but the history of British musicals is heavy with flops. And the Brits did not have triple-threat performers at that time.

I loved it too but I will note that Andrew and Richard Stilgoe did listen to exactly what Frank Rich had said in this documentary. They went back and re-jigged the lyric of "Freight is Great.." to ridicule the silly lyric.
Actually that song contains three different melodies. One would be reused in "Aspects", one in "Sunset Boulevard" and one in the new version of "Starlight Express"

Madonna kinda ruined that for me.. hoping to see it with a proper singer one day
I sort of wonder why critics think a composer is obligated to make his works sound like they came from different composers. That's like asking a parent to produce kids that bear no resemblance to them. Nonsense to say Memory could work in Phantom though, what a bunch of hogwash.

That one is on Andrew, really-"Memory" ALMOST could have worked in the Phantom, but only because the song is so different from everything else in "Cats". This is probably inevitable if you are a) one man b) make a musical with all kinds of various songs.
I think it is still interesting to watch this documentary made over 30 years ago. The Phantom of the Opera and Cats were hits but no one knew where Andrew Lloyd Webber's carreer would go and no one could tell whether the shows would be performed decades after their original runs. Now we know they were :) I saw the Moscow production of "Cats" in 2005 (or 2006). They still perform JCS in Stas Namin's theatre.

I shall never forget the day my mom brought home the lp "Jesus Christ Superstar" I was 12 years old in Catholic elementary school and I thought I couldn't devour those coolest lyrics not to mention the doubly delicious ROCK MUSIC ...I found a golden vinyl in my hands and couldn't wait to learn the music and sing along with Judas&Jesus!! together as buds and brotherhood!... If you'd come today you would have reached a Whole Nation,... Israel in 4 BC, had No Mass Communication!!!! my favorite line in the rock opera...The electric guitars were so advanced so far-reaching into my very soul...that I probably the first 12-year-old girl in my Catholic grade school to forgive Judas and have a heart for him!!! the words and music could change my whole perception of the betrayal of Jesus and looking at Jesus and Judas in parallel perception...Thank you Sir Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice!

We saw the Phantom (and Cats) at the 5th Avenue in dt Seattle with Sarah and Michael Crawford.
They spent $11M to update the 5th Avenue for the Chandelier scene, etc.
Both were amazing. Still have the Book and CD/Soundtracks, including the Making of from each.

It takes talent and guts to do musical theater. It is so easy to bomb. Really high risk projects; you need lots of expensive talent, and you earn it night by night. All the creators are heroes IMHO. So much easier to make a movie where you can tweak it in post production ad nauseum.

I took my parents to see Joseph off Broadway, in the 1970’s. My mother, a Bible scholar, loved it.
So they show many women singing I don't know how to love him.
But not the woman who made it her own and sang it in the movie and on stage originally.

I thought I was having a Nelson Mandela Effect Experience until I found this documentary; I couldn't find it anywhere. I first saw it in 1989 on the Bravo Channel, when The Phantom of the Opera was famous onstage with Michael Crawford. The song that stuck out in my mind the most, though was, Any Dream Will Do, sung by the children.
Have seen JC Superstar live twice with Ted Nealy and Carl Anderson and love it, but my heart will always be with Cats. I've seen it 3 or 4 times live and a couple times on video. I know most or all of the words to be scores, lol.

I was the Investment Mgmt Officer and security trader of a Bank Trust Dep. I came up a couple of times a year to visit exchange and brokers. Would have loved your plays.💖

I certainly agree with all the wonderful and accurate comments I read above.The Disney idea is a great idea. I have seen quite a few of his plays but missed Phantom and also Jesus Christ SS which I regret. My eyes certainly have been opened. I always sat and enjoyed the play without a thought of all the effort that preceded such a fabulous creation.I felt a special admiration for this wonderful man when he sat and entertained us each day during isolation.He was so calm and unassuming.Now that he is back in the theatre working I view him as the lightning that comes after the quiet before the storm.A true genious that deliver what people crave and don't even realize until they hear and see it.💖
Of course the album J C was more popular in the US, I remember how popular the Godspell' LP was around the same time. JC is a very different point of view.

I think that would be like a great 90s style Melody Time! In fact I dream up movie versions of Andrew Lloyd Webbers musicals that should have been made. For instance:
1 Starlight Express (in 1989) at Disney - produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Jim Henson
2 Cats, the Animated Movie in (1994) at Universal - Produced by Steven Spielberg and created by the Amblimation Team
3 Sunset Boulevard (in 2001) at Paramount - directed by John Landis and starring Glenn Close

"Memory" from Cats was ghost-written by Don Black. I was told this by Lionel Bart.
Don wrote a lyric "Good Times" that was one of a few completed lyrics before the final.
And 58:22 was in Starlight Express for a time.

If I understand the video, ALW says that By Jeeves failed because it did not "hang together" as it was a collection of short stories rather than a story, but in a way Cats was the same - a collection of poems. So I wonder why Cats was successful but By Jeeves was not.
I think if you rewatch you will see he was not specifying Jeeves itself by that remark. He did feel that Jeeves failure was caused by the book and staging. But his original score is a gem.

Yes, but Lionel had Oliver! and his others were not similar hits. Sandy Wilson had a hit with The Boyfriend but the history of British musicals is heavy with flops. And the Brits did not have triple-threat performers at that time.

I loved it too but I will note that Andrew and Richard Stilgoe did listen to exactly what Frank Rich had said in this documentary. They went back and re-jigged the lyric of "Freight is Great.." to ridicule the silly lyric.
