In this video I’m going to show you a new effects pedal I’ve just bought that’s been blowing my mind…
I’ve been having so much fun using it within my practice time that I wanted to show you how I’ve been using it - and more importantly WHY I’ve been using it.
I should also say, I’m totally un-affiliated with the company who make this pedal… so there’s no weird motives for me to make this video… the pedal’s just been rocking my world so much I wanted to share it with you guys :)
As always, I’d love to hear from you too… What pedals are rocking your world at the moment?! Lemme know what and why in the comments below the video…
See you in the shed…
Scott :)

I don't care particularly about this pedal, but I finally got to hear a little sneak of Scott the artist and I have to say I could listen to that drone jamming for a long time. Scott is more than a teacher I suspect.
One really cheap and important mod for this pedal (and EH's Kill Switch pedal too) is replacing the stock foot switch, which makes a loud click every time you step on it with a silent momentary switch. There are many to be found on ebay for just a buck or two, they are direct replacements, size wise, and require just a couple soldier points that anyone with a soldering iron can do. Takes less than 5 minutes, and you can dance away on the pedal without click, click, click.
Frank Calabria Yeah I really don't know why EHX keep using their loud switches, it's a shame because they do make great pedals
What's wrong with the click? In a live or studio setting no one but you would ever notice
@@Jessafur - I'm wondering the same
I just got one a day ago and it came with a soft switch!
@@Jessafur EHX foot switches are definitely loud enough that they’ve mildly irked me in a live setting when it’s small and quiet. That’s a rare setting but it would nice to be seamless.
After starting to search for "drones", I remembered your video...had a time trying to find this pedal available, but it's now on its way to me! Great stuff, Scott!
A brilliant video. So few bass teachers emphasise the need to practice modes over the fundamental drone. Without that it is just a version of the major scale! Love the freeze.
That rug really tied the room together...
I thought so too ;)
The Rug Pissers, Dude.
You're out of your element Gyula Soos!-)
Hope the drops don't dilute the beverages.
"...DID IT NOT?!" :P
Love it man. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the review Scott!! Nice pedal!
HAAaaahaa, nice too see your left hand Scott! Thanks for all you do man.
That pedal sounds awesome!
Great demo and info - love your videos!
That is awesome indeed, thanks for sharing Scott. Cheers !
As always - Scott's not only informative and advising, I'm always a little moore happier and warmer inside after spending some time with him!
Cannot thank you enough for this review. As a newbie, there was no way I had managed to articulate to my skilled guitarist friend how I felt I was missing something fundamental between the concepts of keys and scales. The MOMENT you played a scale over the drone, I bought the pedal and now want to tackle modes.
How cool is that? I nearly nodded off! Hypnotic!!
Great post. When you pointed out the water drops I thought you were going to segue a version of the Phil Collins song "The Roof is Leaking" .... I like how you suggest the approach of using it in the context of stuff we're practicing. Your enthusiasm is infectious. This was well worth 18 minutes of my time. Thanks.
Scott - dang, that was funny at 12:00 when you read the instructions. Perfectly edited, made me laugh hard. Also noticed the missing glove - hope that's very good news!
@6:00 I literally shouted at my screen, "just play the damn thing already!!"
Holy shit
Omg yes!
so I immediately ordered this pedal after watching your video and it arrived this morning. I absolutely love it.
very cool pedal. Methinks I want one. :)
I gotta have this! Thanks for the Demo!!!
This is a great tool for harmonic training, like the looper. Thanks for making this video!
Love the videos. This is my next pedal.
That sounds really awesome!!
Brilliant video!
That is pretty cool... Might have to pick one up
Awesome pedal Scott, also that electro harmonix octaver !!! ;- )
I had an EHX Freeze, but sold it once I got the EHX Superego. Essentially the same pedal, but with a few extra bells and whistles, such as an effect send/return, wet/dry mix, and gliss modes. Worth a look into if peeps want to see what else is achievable with this type of effect.
Wicked... I'll check it out. Thanks Adam! :)
The Superego is awesome, but sometimes the simplicity of the Freeze is nice.
You could try a "band in a box" like app for android and IOS. It's called Chordbot. I think it's really useful. Greetings!!
Helium Road oh yeah the Freeze is totally bang on the mark for what it does and use it for a fair amount of things.
What I found online was someone had modded a freeze to have pretty much all the features that the Superego does, charging to do the mod etc. All totally reasonable, but of course by the time you've bought a Freeze, paid for the mods etc you're better off purchasing the Superego.
The one thing I didn't do was see how much fun you can have with both pedals at the same time!
I hope Electro Harmonix is paying you for this, because this video just made me buy one of these
My man Damian Coccio hipped me to this one last year. I LOVE it.
I love Damian's playing Eric! :)
wow. I'm surprised you haven't had this pedal earlier. I have got this pedal on my board for the past couple of years. It's super fun and has so many uses even in improv. Your video of this pedal though is great!
That reading the instructions bit was hysterical, hahaha
Very Belfast Child. Love it. You've really got me wanting one of those now.
EHX must be loving this vid!
Yes, a drone note (or notes) is great to practice scales and modes over. I also use them a lot to create ambient soundscapes on my bass. It is also very easy to make continuous drone loops with a loop pedal, like a Ditto or a Jamman. I like to make looped drones because I can incorporate a repeating swell or decay of the drone note into the loop, which makes it more interesting and fun, in my opinion, because it adds a rhythmic, or pulse, component. Of course you can also create infinite number of drone layers on a loop pedal by overdubbing. On the other hand, if you want to seamlessly transition from one drone to another, it looks like the Freeze sustain pedal would be easier.
Such a cool demo. Thanks.
12:03 A Rule #2 Bassist trying to read something lol
Awesome playing and demo btw.
How great is that wallpaper?
Oh yeah - cool pedal mate...
sounds good Scott
Thanks for the new idea - I had only been using this with the EHX B9 pedal.
really great and informative video!
"Just hangin' out here with some pedals..."
Ladies and gentlemen, MR SCOTT DEVINE!
It was really funny when you stomped on all three pedals and none of them turned off at 12:53..lol I have been there.
I've loved the EHX Freeze since I first got mine! ....and a few years later I'm not even close to being bored with it. Great for practicing, and live I use it as a harmonic pad at times (we haven't a keyboard).
So cool!! And that wallpaper... LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And just WHAT is that thing by the wall with the cord???
I just bought one last Sunday! It is great. I love using it with bowing upright bass scales. Really great for focusing on intonation. The other cool trick I've found is triggering it on beat one while playing bossa nova bass lines. It's like adding a string pad to your bass line. So much fun.
Thanks for the great videos Scott.
Erin - That would be a cool trick showing a quick clip how you do it ..... I like my bossa
Great to catch up on the older videos... pre-gloves. I know why you wear them, but love these older non glove vids!
Cool video. I am fooling around with the DigiTech BP355 currently. Wish I had more time to play with all the features.
I bought the Freeze a few years ago and totally love it. It's a staple on my bass pedal board.
Sweet pedal!!! This isn't bass related but would you ever talk about a pedal collection (if you have one) or better yet, your hoodie collection & where you get them from? Your hoodies are just as cool as your bass collection, to me that is lol
Exactly what I've been looking for. I'm trying to get into minimal music, Steve Reich type of minimal. A lot of sustains in that kind of music. Thanks Scott for uploading this demonstration.
Scott this is ingenious! I always look for stuff that sounds inspiring to me - besides the bass or any instrument scale practicing it would be crazy cool for any musician. Think of a vocalist just freezing a tone and singing with him/herself droning around?
When I first bought my EHX Freeze pedal it was like the sky opened wide with possibilities. The Saturday night jam sessions i was running changed for the better. I no longer had to rely on another guitarist or keys player to get some interesting harmonies to improvise on. And can you say ambient synth pad sounds...? Next purchase for me is the EHX Super Ego+ !!!
Scott, you are one cool dude !
Scott welcome to the wonderful weird world of Mike Matthews and EHX🤟😎. Mike is my spirit animal😏
Scott,
The sound you have at around 12:40 is beautiful, and I'd love to try and capture that (with the help of those pedals) but I have to ask, is that Jazz bass fretless?
Thanks For Sharing!!!!
+1 for the Freeze. I looked for others but none do the seamless loop as well as this pedal. Also try the Superego pedal which does 'freeze-on-freeze' for full chords and also dynamic capture for 'freeze-as-you-go' depending on playing dynamics eg loud=freeze, softer=no freeze.
Cool, will get one.
Great stuff!!❤
By any chance have you ever experimented with any red witch pedals? They are fantastic. I think you'd really enjoy the fuzz god 2. Epic fuzz!👍 keep jamming sir. You're an inspiration!
while I was waiting for your 'context' idea to start to make sense my wandering mind was wondering about what happened to your glove?!?!? The context idea really made sense once you started playing over the note with the pedal - very cool
I bought one of these back in 2012 it's the best decision I ever made. My guitarist friend bought one two and he wore away some of the paint from using it so much.
EHX should re-brand this pedal as 'the context'. :-)
Haha about time. Been using it since it was released
Brother, let's get you a pedal board for these stomp effects we're seeing; nothing fancy, probably just a black surface with a camera mount for ya. I love your lessons & would love to see your cuts to the pedals so we can see your adjustments better. If you lived locally (US, California), I'd make one for you. At any rate, cheers & keep teaching me the ways =)
this is a brilliant idea I wish I knew earlier. I don't have those specific pedals but I do have a multi pedal that will get the job done. See you in the shed man!
Very cool (pardon the pun)! I bought a trio pedal a little while back for guitar but have been using it more for the bass, can't do the context thing without the click like freeze but I can still get context from listening to the bass line generated by the chords I play into it and then just turn the bass down and play with the drums. It's fun and the options to change the style keeps it interesting 😊
If you have a synth or keyboard with a hold key button you can do the same but its kinda cool with only the bass (oh and the pedal)
This is literally the most important pedal in my band. Both guitarists and myself (bass) use a freeze for drones under the songs. (Mainly have a low B droning throughout the gig)
Thanks man you inspired me 👌🏾👍🏾🆒
Great pedal and man you look like Andrei Markov!
Hey Scott! I have learned a lot from you! That bass look so comfortable and that string spacing too. If I am not mistaken it is 16mm. That is what I prefer on basses. Anyway, I love that pedal, and I can see many uses for it, and I would like to get it, but I am currently very much on budget. Can you recommend a cheaper alternative?
Even used one are more than 70euros.
I got that pedal too! Don't really use it though.. But maybe I will now. They only downside is that you have to have shoes on when you practice with it.
I really enjoy this pedal. Originally I bought it when I got my EUB for creating quick drones while practicing intonation, and have actually found myself using it a lot while going through your SBL Harmonic Layering Course. Also really enjoy using it while practicing arpeggios through standards and sustaining the root of each chord in fast mode. Out of curiosity what TonePrint are you using on your Flashback Mini?
Hey Scott check out the superego by ehx. literally the same as the freeze but with effects built in. I'm buying that freeze pedal soon. beast of a practice tool.
ahaha, love where you keep your toothbrush charger
where's the glove Scott? good vid brother, thinking of getting that freeze
Is it just me or is Scott always biting his gear lol. Keep em coming Scott. I love ur tutorials. FYI, I finally received my SBL One Strap. The quality is very nice.
love you scott
I've tried to do this with looper, it has more options. Can get there any single tone or chord sequence.
Kozmic! An electronic shruti box. Love the videos.
Awesome...
I guess if this pedal has 2 footswitches, one for freeze holdin(as it is) and one like "press to on, press again to off" would be better.
Yeah -- also having the effect level on an exp pedal would be cool. Both should be quite easy mods. I got one a few weeks ago and love it; always a bit scared to break stuff but I might do both of these at some point.
The EHX Superego is an upgraded version of this!
That looks promising, cheers for mentioning it!
It has the "latch" option on the 3-way switch. "Latch" makes it so that you don't have hold down the switch.
Oh, in that case it's perfect!
As far a drone tone it's useful if your working on intonation on an upright or fretless bass but as far as practicing different chord types maj /min / dim and so on you do not hear the whole chord all you hear is a root note I prefer to hear the whole chord the root, 3rd, 5th, 7, 9th and so on if that's what I am working on then I can really hear the chordal 'sound' can't get that with a drone tone
Scott! Check out the Shift Line Force pedal. Does the same thing and has an octave down setting!
I've been playing one of these lately, it's going to change the game for bass players everywhere
The single note drone had me wondering if Peter Gabriel was gonna pop out and start singing Talk to Me. Also reminded me of the end of Phantasm.
I’m always in shock when strangers mention Peter Gabriel and especially something like that from Secret World Live tour………..most meaningful artist in my life and especially that album, concert. Take care.
@@jdssurf Peter is a legend. There's no one like him.. And the SWL tour was one I'll always regret missing.
I wish Jaco would be around to use this. Sounds like what he did.
What's with the outlet??
You’re awesome! Thanks.
i love this teaching ..pls what is the names of this effect .thanks
I have this pedal and I was very strongly considering selling it, but now I'm not so sure. May use it with bass rather than guitar.
What kind of tuners are those? They are pretty sweet.
"I've got my bass" - funniest part
Freeze is a great little practice tool, and it's a lot cheaper than the Plus Pedal, which is also great.
My issue with the Freeze pedal is how loud the latch switch is when you stomp on it. EHX needs to use the kind Wampler uses.
Yes! man this pedal = so much fun! on my fav list since months...waiting for the tax return to add it to the arsenal.
It may have made sense but I was taking a shot everytime you said "context" and so now my friend is typing this cause I can't use my fingers at the moment! 😂😂😂😂🍸🍺🍻 Cheers Scotty ol' boy ol' boy! Context!!! 😨 😂😂😂😂😂
Love it!!!!! The Pedal not the Leak...
You should see the EHX Mel9 it is ridiculous! EHX is knocking it out of the park the canyon delay is cool as well
nice, thanks !
cool video, but I used to play guitar and got the BOSS ME25 multi FX pedal which has a the same freeze feature. Doesn't sound bad on my bass at all
One of my favourite pedals)
chucky likey. great tool. This would fit into live stuff as well. on order. thanks scott. always my favorite bass youtube channel. #oldbaltimorespeedway
