  • Anacapa Island is the closest of the Channel Islands in Channel Islands National Park. This island is only an hour boat ride off the coast of California, and while it is small, it is still a fun spot to explore. I took the day trip in August 2021 and he is what I explored. On the island, I saw nesting gulls, Inspiration Point, and the lighthouse. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments.

I used to live right on the ocean in Santa Barbara, and I loved watching the islands off in the distance, when the fog lifted. I never had a chance to see these islands up close and personal. Thanks for this video, so I have a chance to remember that part of my life.

When I was a kid we had a boat at Channel Islands harbor. We'd go out to Anacapa to fish for Bonito. We used live anchovy fish for bait which we kept in a bait tank outside the boat. The sharks would come around and bump the tank. Seeing a shark roll over and stare at you with those dead black eyes was always a chilling experience but the fishing was great!

When I was overseas amid a stone age culture
I learned why they often extract all shark eyes.
Because by ancient means they produce a hard
translucent orb. Which women wear as woven
into their long black hair. Which I've drilled by
cordless tools and fitted with silver wire so a
man-eater glitter can be seen on pierced ears.
So, if reader has any stone age skills, you too
can use shark parts for jewelry purposes..

I hitched a ride with the park service for a story I was working on, also included was a short guided tour. Lots of nesting gulls when I was there eons ago. For swimming in the cove, water's chilly so bring a shorty wet-suit if you can. Park service has webcams on their website so you can view island life anytime, including an underwater cam in the protected landing cove. And I've scuba'd around the island many times too including an annual u/w fish count.

I have camped on the island and had a blast. The hard part is lugging all your water as there is no drinkable water available anywhere on Anacapa.
You are right. The sunrise and sunsets made the trip worth while. Also, I brought my wetsuit as the water is cold but lots of younger people just jumped right in and enjoyed their swim. By Late September to October the birds are gone other than the usual number flying around.

Camped for 1 night a few years ago in March. A lot greener. I had a good time. Definitely a lot of time for such a small island. Plenty of time to read and just zen out But after the afternoon boat leaves it’s just the birds and maybe some other campers. Great sunset and sunrise. Was good to do it once. Got me interested to visit some of the other islands. Hopefully I will be able to see others in the future.

Fun day! One of the things I love about Island Packers is that they do take time to stop for wildlife, or the arch, or the drilling platform. It's way more than just a shuttle to & from the islands. You didn't mention whether or not you actually did get pooped on - you said a 75% chance, so ... ??? Good video!!

Try Micronesia. Bathtub warm down to 30 feet.
The most frequent injury occurs when visitors
forget to not walk under coconut trees is windy
weather. Me? I learned how Stone Age culture
could transform shark eyeballs into translucent
orbs. Which women wore in braided scalp hair.
The cold glitter of man-eaters in moonshine
or at daybreak dares you to step-up.

How is everyone? I've been to anacapa Island twice. When I was a teenager about 17 years old me and my two buddies took the boat there with our little dinghy they allowed us to bring and all of our snorkeling gear and spearfishing gear and camped for the weekend. We had an awesome time swimming through the beautiful kelp forests spearfishing swimming with the sea lions. We gathered abalone one lobster and speared a whole bunch of different varieties of fish. The biggest one that I speared was a calico Bass. The weather was great there was no wind hardly and there weren't a lot of birds at the time. At night we ended up having a big fish fry and sharing it with four or five other campers that were on the island for the weekend it was a great time. The second time I was at anacapa Island was many years later I brought my son he was 10 years old at the time. We got dropped off on the island. I brought some snorkeling gear. I did not bring my Hawaiian sling spear gun because at this time when we went there there was only one area on the island that was open to spearfishing in which you would have to swim all the way there and actually it's where all most of the sharks are. I had my young son and did not want risk him being in the water and snorkeling for his first time on top of it. It turns out that it was very rough water very murky that time. The biggest problem was that the time of year we went because we did not know was right in the middle of the mating season for all the seagulls it was a disaster it stunk so bad on the island like seagull poop and they're screeching was so loud constantly never ceasing. The wind blew so strong at night it was really rough I ended up with a major headache from the smell of pneumonia from the poop. But we had to ride it all out the entire weekend because the boat was not going to return till Sunday and we were the only ones on the island. So I suggest anyone going over there check to make sure that it's not the seagull or sea birds or whatever all the species were are on their peak mating season because trust me it was really bad. There is a sign there that says every single in the world was probably born right on anacapa Island or there's a good chance of it it says a very good chance so you can only imagine how many seagulls were there that weekend probably millions

Camped on Anacapa two years ago in early May, the island was definitely way greener and prettier than in late summer.
Was the only tourist staying overnight besides some maintenance workers. In my memory there were even more seagulls sitting around and screaming all day long, besides the fog-horn honking every 15 seconds. Was so glad when the ship came back after 24 hours, the noises drive you carzy there.
P.S. Carrying 90 pound of luggage up the stairs and to the campground is a good workout

My top 3 island camp dislikes.........
      1. A blowing fog horn at night is getting louder and I then recall the island has no such automation.
      2. Screaming yacht cocktail revels end as an ebb tide tilts their hull hard atop a rocky reef.
      3. Awakening on the beach when trod upon at night by hungry coconut crabs.

Josh when I was growing up my father was an avid sailor. We lived in California so the Santa Cruz Island channel was my camping trip although I was on a sailboat. Anacapa was especially amazing for us. The boat that takes you there now did not exist there were no tours we anchored off the coast. We took a six man dinghy and we went and explored the caves. Some were very deep. First of all let me make this clear this was illegal at the time the military was using these islands for different things and no one was supposed to be there. There was no light except for the light that our sailboat produced. If it was an especially rough night dad was up all night making sure that we didn’t slam into the rocks. When I say me I am talking about our two families mine and our neighbors about 10 people in at all. The wildlife was not afraid of us they hadn’t seen us they weren’t exposed to people. It was amazing the caves were filled with shells that cost a dollar.06 to $10 in Catalina at the Shell shops. They were covered with tar And as it turned out the year that we were there there was a terrible killing off of a bologna and other she’ll creatures which was very sad. We took homework treasures which we were not allowed to do and gave them out as soap dishes to all of our families and friends. My Tat was in the Navy retired he knew what he was doing but just for a little moment he got to be a pirate and that was all great with us. The joy of that island and the mystery that it behold has nothing to do with walking on it it’s going into it there’s your mystery there’s your fun. Go back at night bring a dingy.

I went out there maybe 25 years ago when I was in high school. My mom taught at Long Beach Poly and a bunch of teachers, administrators and their families went out to see the pinnipeds. We were actually on the sister ship of the dive boat that tragically burned a few years ago and took so many lives. We had to cut our time short due to poor weather, and when they tried to get us from shore to the main ship via zodiac the waves were PUMPING: Like 10 foot hollow shorebreak even though we were on the leeward side of the island! Anyway, a huge wave broke right on us and I got thrown into the water, fully clothed, mid-winter. I swam in and then had to hike to the ranger station, which was not close by. I was in pretty bad shape and they were going to air lift me out but the weather was too rough. I ended up with pneumonia, bad memories, and one hell of a story!

Guess I haven't been to Anacapa in a very long time, the vegetation looks all but wiped out & dead... is that normal this time of year? I remember it being much greener than this.

I think that is pretty normal this time of year with all the gulls and heat then it comes back in the spring.

@@californiathroughmylens That's good to know, thank you again for posting these videos. It's good to see parts of Cali that I've been to and others I need to visit.

The other channel islands are way better. The view is nice but other than that, its limited for activities.
