The current record is held by hafthor bjornsson, just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean you can dismiss it

    • @GiantsLiveSTRONGMAN
      @GiantsLiveSTRONGMAN  Před 11 měsíci +214

It certainly shouldn't be dismissed. Hafthor did a great lift. However, the reason it isn't labelled the World Record in this contest - the contest that has become the gold standard of professional deadlifting - is because it simply wasn't done under the rules agreed that the strongman deadlift should be done under. Also -and this isnt meant to be in any way anti Hafthor - but his lift iis not the '' HEAVIEST DEADLIFT EVER'' even,. So were we to decide to use the highest deadlift ever, that can be done under any conditions, as the gold standard for the World Deadlift Champs , then the 'Record' still would not be Hafthor's record that we would be using!
(Please do 'SKIP TO THE BOTTOM' of this reply if you want the quick version, and to fully understand what we mean in that statement. Go to the last few sentences of this reply for the punchline :-).
Let me also say this - Hafthor Bjornsson has done the heaviest conventional style deadlift ever. End of discussion. But much like in weightlifting, powerlifting or athletics, when a standard is agreed upon and created, you have to respect that and if you want to break that agreed upon record then take the record on in the conditions agreed upon. Please allow me to explain what I mean:
Well, in 2014, the World Deadlift Championships was created. it followed on from other Last-Man Standing Style Strongman Deadlift contests that had been were run in Norway, Madison Square garden and Leeds Headingly (to name a few pro-contests that it began at and stayed the same. At these events the rules were laid down so that a real deadlift event could happen and it would really see how strong the athletes were in comparison to say powerlifting and any other strength sport that incorporated the gym deadlift in its training. Thus showcasing how good these strongmen had become at the conventional deadlift - note/ conventional deadlift and not the sumo. That is another key element. So too, is the format, in other words - how it is being run. it is a contest run in a high jump rising bar style, ie/ you continue to follow on from the man before you as long as you are both succesful or you may wish to pass the lift to conserve energy; but you weren't limited to three lifts. The straps were allowed to keep the hands from getting shredded at the start of a long contest that often had 6 to 8 events, But when the beast dead lifters in the world expressed interest in taking part, as it had grown into a very good spectacle to watch as an event and was a great way to validate how much you could lift in a proper deadlift when competing amongst your peers, we began to make sure other rules were tighter than previous strongman deadlifts. We decided to use the Okie bar as our standard lifting bar though a Texas deadlift bar would also work. Multiple international referees would check the calibrated weights and load the bar each lift. No dropping would strike strictly enforced. One deadlift suit was allowed only. No erector briefs or baby oil was allowed. And with those rules in place and a large prize fund created for it the World Deadlift camps was formed. So we aren't saying Hafthor hasn't lifted the weight he has lifted but he didnt do it in the format we set up this contest under. Hafthor was following his own rules - not the set of rules put in place for the strongman style of competition. It would even be arguable that it wasn't a competition at all. After all, he didn't win first place over a group of his international peers did he? He wasn't selecting the weights to pass or take in the same way athletes competing in this contest have to. A guide set of lifting weights is suggested before hand but ultimately the referees dictate the next jump in weight at the World Deadlift Champs. On the contrary, Hafthor went at his own pace and using the lifts he chose to make that record. There are other obvious issues that are becoming clear I hope now you have read this so far.
The list of differences goes on, it was a different bar that Hafthor used and we have no details on what actual equipment he wore on the day. There weren't multiple international referees on hand to check and measure everything. It must be said that Magnus Ver Magnusson was there to referee it but he has stated he didnt get involved in weighing things as it wasn't apart of the format set up. So th the hear referee did not weigh the weights. (NOTE = we too not think they were wrong - I dont think any tampering has gone on on and I want to state that - but you start to understand why when you put together and agree a set of rules to play by they must be followed to make the contest and any lift an authentic one).
Again - I stress - that doesn't mean his lift wasn't amazing , and it merits all the plaudits it got. it was a hell of lift. Hafthor has lifted the heaviest conventional deadlift I have heard of. That being said, are you sure it is the heaviest deadlift ever? (please, skip to end if you cant be bothered to read all my many discussion points as there is a punchline worth reading).
Anyway - in this instance I would draw similarities to the great shot putter Brian Oldfield as he had the unofficial shot put world record for some time and it was universally praised for being an extraordinary feat of athleticism. it didnt mean the IAAF or the Olympics had to use the throw he did under whatever conditions it was done under as their World Record. it would be unfair on the men validating their lifts under such conditions, as it was essentially done in an exhibition environment that lacked the necessary controls agreed by shot putters the world over.
So there is no ignoring the fact Hafthor has lifted 501kg. But in this environment it's wrong to put the lift on the same pedestal as the world Record conditions the men you see in this video are lifting under. Maybe Hafthor's conditions were harder?! Whatever way you see it it simply isnt the same scenario and thus it isnt right to pretend it is or we make a mockery of competition rules. The lift no doubt stands alone as one of the most amazing feats of strength. But that doesnt mean the World Deadlift Championships should recognise it as the true World Record and the one they must use. Just as the Strongman Deadlift shouldn't ever expect powerlifting to start recognising the Strongman World record as theirs.
In powerlifting you have other world record holders who have all agreed to lift under their federation codes and rules. I believe Danny Grigsby has pulled the biggest deadlift outside of the IPF system. He pulled a some deadlift of 487.5kg I believe. Still the highest conventional raw pull is Benedikt Magnusson at 460kg (or as of the time of writing it is) The highest equipped deadlift I believe is still mr Andy Bolton. The IPF deadlift record which is arguably the strictest of all sets of rules has a record of only - Wierzbicki Krzysztof with 420kg . So with all this info in mind - if you want to only consider Hafthor's style of record as the biggest ever then really it should be disregarded as in the same manner as Hafthor's lift, the same IPF lifter, Krzysztof Wierzbicki, pulled 502.5kg in a gym pull with some contest rules to it. It's on CZcams so please check it out. For us its a same deadlift which automatically disallows it, but it is actually the heaviest deadlift ever. However we won't be using that as the World Record either. Hope this makes sense and seems fair.

@@GiantsLiveSTRONGMAN first off, as much as you like to consider yourself the official rules of all things strongman that’s just not the case. There is no governing body of strongman so saying that it didn’t follow your rules so it shouldn’t count is bullshit, the lockouts on dumbbell at words were horrendous but were still getting down signals and good lift calls that was so bad that Brian shaw publicly made a call for judging reform. Had there been a record broken though, it would have been accepted (multiple national records were broken and accepted) just like when iron biby had a bent arm at lockout he still got a good lift and “world record” from your judge. That proves that despite there being no official standard(apart from no sumo) agreed upon by all federation, as a collective we can agree to trust the judging standards set by major federations despite some competitions and officials having significantly looser standards (giants live, wsm, mvm). We’ve agreed that we won’t discredit the athletes for the organizaters shortcomings.
Also strongman records are frequently broken in “exhibition” lifts, just a couple weeks ago at uks strongest man there was a couple records broken that were “exhibition” lifts, a few years ago at summermania Mateusz kieliszkowski broke the dumbbell record as an exhibition lift and my favourite example- the current log lift record held by iron biby which was an exhibition lift done at the giants live world tour finals, a lift which crowned him the 2021 world loglift champion and a awarded him a world record despite not being “in competition”
Saying hafthor went by his own rules is a bit of a stretch since it mimicked other max deadlift formats (to the bests of its ability) in a time when there was no other option. Secondly don’t act like Eddie didn’t get to choose every aspect of the night he pulled 500kg, we’ve all heard the testimony given by multiple athletes present that day who’ve said the entire event was catered towards Eddie pulling 500kg, there’s even been word that Eddie supplied the bad.
And yes the weights were not calibrated by multiple international referees but to the knowledge of the fans they’ve never been calibrated at giants live shows, we expect them to be calibrated but it’s never been proven. Are we just supposed to blindly trust you? I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that the weight on hafhtors bar was the listed weight, the same can not be said for any giants live competition because there is no proof. We can accept the claims of eleiko or mirafit or whoever else is sponsoring that event but there’s always a possibility that the listed weight is more than 0.25% off the actual weight. For all we know Eddie could just be the worlds strongest looking actor.
You say he didn’t take first place against his international peers, does that mean national competition don’t count? Might be time to look into britains strongest man and see if any records have been broken there. And again there’s been plenty strongman records broken by single competitors in single event “competitions”
Mvm can say he wasn’t involved with weighing anything but we can see him on camera watching while everything was being weighed giving a signal to the people placing the weights on the scale seemingly gesturing that he approves that they’re the correct weight. And again giants live has never calibrated their plates to the knowledge of the fans. We’ve never seen the weights on a scale, just on the bar
Drawing a link between strongman and shotput/Olympics is pointless because of how suffit he sports are. First off the olympics had its own records for everything, and only acknowledges records set at the Olympics(huh I guess not that different from you and wsm). Shotput I only know from 8th grade track and field so I won’t comment on that but I will use powerlifting as a stand-in for comparing sports is pointless. In powerlifting there’s a million different weight classes and age classes and amount of supportive equipment in order to provide adequate distinction between records…except there’s no distinction between wether the lift was highbar or lowbar squat, sumo or conventional deadlift and gymnastics or real bench press. There’s also no distinction wether a standard powerlifting bar was used for all 3 lifts like in the ipf or if there was different bars, danny grigsby pulling sumo on a kabuki bar and Jesus olivares pulling conventional on a power bar is very different lifts yet they’re considered to be the same with the only exception being weight class and one is drug tested the other is not. In strongman there’s a different record for every type of deadlift: there’s conventional, elephant bar, hummer tire, silver dollar, 18 inch, Ukrainian, car with front handle, car with side handle, axel from standard heigh, elevated axel and they all have different records. Do we know all the records? Maybe auntie Liz and the guy who runs strongman archives do but none the less they all have different records.
And lastly if you want to include deadlift variations (which is what sumo is) then neither Krzysztof Wierzbick nor hafthor would have the heaviest deadlift of all time, rauno heinla would have the heaviest deadlift ever at 580kg

Interesting thought…. Probably it is pretty unlikely when you consider it went from 463kg to 500kg in one night. So, I haven’t done this on a calculator - but I think a 37kg jump from 463 to 500 is an increase of roughly 8 percent. So, If someone were to put another 8 percent on 500kg, well, in relative terms it would take 40kg. That is to equal it by another 8%. So- 540kg would be needed. And, even if we are talking in absolute terms, then it’s still a weight jump of another 37kg = a pull of 537kg to get the same jump again. So it’s big!! Lol !! really big!

I don't think for a second any of the processes that went into his lift, from verifying the plates to how it was refed by Magnus, is anything different from a Giants Live event, WSM, etc. I think it's fair to point out that Thor's lift came at an unprecedented time. Comps couldn't be held and to set a goal, build toward that over many months, and to be set to peak to challenge the 500 get axed because of the pandemic is harsh. Once someone does it and another learns how the first trained for it and succeeds, then the weight becomes lifted by droves of people. The 500kg+ is slowly being reached. The problem is that the last guy (Hapthor Bjornsonn) that set the record left it difficult to replicate due to his unique build and genetics. I do not believe that will be a hurdle for too long. @@specialist812003 No, it counts for nothing unless under the competition guidelines, in my opinion. If he goes under the competition and does it OK. Until then, Eddie is the first and only one to lift that weight.

It wasn't 'his weights', the bar was one of two made for the event. It was certified, under BAWLA, the oldest weightlifting association in the world. Of course it was 'set up for him', he's the one that suggested lifting the 500 in the first place, when no one else did. No one said, at any point during this broadcast or any other "Thor's didn't count", it just wasn't done in competition, and this *competition* is called "The world deadlift championship".

Eddie Hall is THE BEAST!! he 100% earned that nickname,The Beast, with that half ton deadlift world record!!? He's awesome and in 2017 especially he was just unbelievable and 100% deserved his Worlds Strongest Man win in 2017!!? In 2017 Eddie was just insanely strong! He set this Deadlift WR and won Worlds Strongest man in 2017!! The things he did to gain weight and muscle in 2017 was unreal and was pretty dangerous!? I know he had 1 scare in event b4 Worlds Strongest man I think it was? He got a cramp in his chest and he even thought he mightve been having a heart attack!? He was probably lucky to have been cleared to compete in WSM by Dr's!? But he was cleared and apparently was good to go and was fine cuz he did what he had to do and won WSM 2017!!!?? I love Eddie Hall...him Brian Shaw, and Robby Oberst r probably my favorite strongmen!? I didn't really watch or know shit about strongman, I'd seen a few WSM events on tv b4 but didn't know any of the guys, but when History Channel came out with "the Strongest man in history" show I kinda got into liking strongman and got to know a Lil about Eddie Hall,Brian Shaw, Robby Oberst, and Nick Best. And from the show u really got to like those guys especially Eddie Hall cuz he's not only strong as hell but also funny as hell!? So is Oberst!? And Shaw is just amazing with his strength!

Makarov was close he just needs to improve that lockout strength which can be done by increasing his glute strength, he managed to do the hardest part so I personally think he will manage the 505kg in a few years or less.

Are there 2 categories in dead lift, one with straps and one without? If dead lift is all about who can lift the heaviest weight then surely grip strength without straps is, or should be part of that?
