My Thoughts on Alberta’s Coal Development Policy

  • I have done a whole lot of research over the last month on Alberta’s Coal Development Policy that was recently rescinded with little to no public consultation. This is a policy that was put in place in 1976 to protect our headwaters. One thing I have always valued above all is how clean, pure and great tasting our natural water is here in Alberta. That is now at risk. I hope you take a moment to watch this short video I put together with footage from my rides in the mountain ranges that are now threatened.

    Being able to walk the mountains and get excited with the view, feel the sun on your face or the icy wind that comes down from the top of the mountain range, are things that I always enjoy on every trip to the mountains. And at that moment when thirst is pressing, being able to dip my hand in a river, a lake, or a spring, and drink the clear, fresh water that comes from the thaw is a privilege that unfortunately few people consider important. For many people, business and money are more important than preserving rivers, lakes and glaciers. Wherever I go, it is always the same: governments and private companies (mostly mining) litigating with local people for the preservation and conservation of water. Even when some areas are declared national parks or protected areas, policies change according to the interests of governments and private companies. I understand that many countries have other priority problems to attend to, but water should be a priority for everyone.

As residents of High River, we see every day the Rocky Mountains to the west of us and consider ourselves truly blessed to have them so close. Our local Town Council, on which I serve, has passed a few motions asking the Alberta government to reinstate the 1976 Coal Policy, stop all exploration currently underway and put a stop work order on future exploration, until the people of Alberta have had a say in the future of mountaintop removal coal mining. On a personal note, my wife and I love Heartland. It's a Sunday evening tradition in our home. We love having High River as one of your sets. Best wishes.

But you guys are some of the ones with the greatest platforms to influence. Had, over the past 50 to 70 years, so many not remained silent, the odds rise, as with those beautiful mountains, that we all would have found ourselves living in a very different, much better, world than the one we are finding ourselves in, and the one that is heading straight at us...

I know it's really off topic but I have been sitting here crying for the past hour thinking of all of my favorite moments in the show that include both of you. You both are amazing actors and I can't wait for the new season to come out! When I heard the spoiler I couldn't help but feel like a little piece of me died along with him. He will for sure be missed from us fans and from the people on set. You have been one of the biggest role models in my life on and off the show! I never heard of the show until last year, then all of a sudden a watch the first episode home alone and next thing you know I'm on season 5! You have inspired me to keep going forward with my dream of working with horses, thank you so much for that! I really can't explain how much you have done for me! This just showed up in my CZcams feed today. I know this is far from Alberta, but this was done in eastern Ohio near the Pennsylvania state line. Here in the eastern part of the U.S., we call it strip mining and the Appalachian foothills were extensive strip mined for coal. Our once beautiful foothills are now gone along with the brown bears and other wildlife that called those hills home. Colorado calls it surface mining. Around Cripple Creek, CO, they are removing mountain tops mining gold and silver, leaving a huge scar in the Smokey Mountains. It’s absolutely a shame to deface the natural landscape like we do.

    My happiest memory (other than birth of my daughter) is the weekend trip my husband and I took to the mountains, we enjoyed the gorgeous and relaxing hot springs.
    Growing up in the US, the Midwest, I always wanted to go to the mountains. I went to Mexico once, laid on the sandy beaches and lazed around in the sun... but I don't feel like I would miss it, if I never went to another beach again.
    The mountains stole my heart their beauty, it is and always will be a dream of mine (of ours) to move and live in the mountains someday. It was because of this amazing and magickal mountain trip that my daughter is here today. She will turn 2 in June and I wish nothing more than to go back and revisit the mountains with her, since we weren't able to for her first birthday.
    We met the most amazing and kind people on our visit, and we actually both said how much we would love to raise a family there, in the small mountain town.
    If anyone watching this, and reading this comment has never been to the mountains, I truly believe it is an experience everyone needs to have at least once in their lives.

    Totally agree with you Amber. Here’s the reason big business wants to exploit the Rockies and open up coal mining....
    “As Canada's 5th most valuable mined commodity, coal mining is an important economic contributor and adds billions of dollars in direct and indirect impacts each year. The industry also benefits Canadians through employment, investment in physical infrastructure, taxes and royalties.”
    As usual, it’s all about money! I guess it won’t stop until all our beautiful scapes and vital resources are depleted or razed down to the ground.
    We’ve installed solar on our home here in Nova Scotia and haven’t paid a hydro bill since Feb2020. It’s clean and not at all unsightly. There are alternatives. Fossil fuel companies have to adapt and stop undermining the alternatives that are being offered. Fossil fuel contamination and the destruction mining it makes, has to stop. There currently appear to be outstanding issues surrounding Orphan oil Wells.
    “In 2017 there were 450,000 wells registered in Alberta with about 155,000 "no longer producing but not yet fully remediated". In their 2017 report, the C.D. Howe Institute estimated the cost of clean up of orphan wells was as high as $8 billion.”
    Should this issue not be addressed first before approving another disastrous mining venture and leaving this planet scarred and polluted?

      Here’s the thing... as population increases we need more energy and the best sources of energy are fossil fuels. They have the highest output and smallest input comparatively to any other source of energy so it just makes sense. Other energy sources are absolutely great and needed! However they can be just as damaging to these lands you are discussing. Solar energy is great but where do you think that metal comes from? MINING. Where do the metals for batteries come from? MINING! Same thing your against with coal mining just probably not in your backyard so it doesn’t bother you as much. The reality is that it’s not as simple as amber and everyone commenting makes it out to be energy is complicated and costly and no matter what energy form you choose there are going to be consequences and some sort of mining or drilling FOR EVERYTHING. So please try and understand that. Also for a lot of people especially governments it is totally about money but like I said fossil fuels have the lowest input meaning cost the least and use minimal materials to produce so it is logically a great option. Coal mining isnt the greatest form for energy because it’s messy, dangerous, and ugly. But it is one of the most used and best sources for electricity.
      I’m not saying I’m against everyone saying this is awful for Alberta because it definitely is and so sad. But, everyone uses energy and everything is mined so it’s not as simple as so many seem to think

    • @plantsoverpills1643
      @plantsoverpills1643 Před 3 lety

      @@maddiev4862 You’re right. It’s not simple. But what about recycling the tons of metal that’s already been mined and sits around in huge scrap heaps? What’s all the big talk about reducing our carbon foot print for, if plans to open up more coal mines move forward? How about waste-to-energy incineration? That would be killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Removing waste and creating energy as a bi-product. It’s done in Europe. I do understand that it’s more expensive than simply dumping garbage in our landfills; but those landfills are filling up. Canada is going to invest over 2 billion on a space program, while the garbage piles up sky high down here on earth. There is something very wrong with that picture. We are in the 21st century. We should not be regressing back to the practices of the industrial revolution.

    • @maddiev4862
      @maddiev4862 Před 3 lety

      @@plantsoverpills1643 you’re right! We totally need to recycle so much of what we have used. The smeltering process can be difficult for mixed metals and definitely expensive. But you are right investment priorities are so off it’s insane. Unfortunately fossil fuels can’t be recycled and are so widely used it would be impossible to replace but can be used little by little! I’m a geologist and have worked in the oil field and see first hand how important it is and how many petroleum products we use. I also have seen how government and investments in certain priorities change the industry. A lot of oil companies also invest in alternative energy so that’s great and under reported. But yes recycling needs to be a priority! I think it’s important to have these views and ideas to recycle and move forward as a community but also understand the industry and complexity of energy and where it comes from. That way it’s not cancel this and cancel that and invest here or there.

I told my guy that that was in Canada and I wanted to go there some day cause it was SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL 😍 And he actually didn't believe me...he said "I've been to Canada before and never seen that kind of scenery" Apparently he's never been to Alberta. And let's not forget all the wildlife this nonsense will kill off ☹☹☹ #SAVETHEMOUNTAINS!!!
