Episode 1: Measuring, Scribing & Cutting - (free) Online Metalsmithing Class by Estona Tutorials

  • In this video we will start out with some basics. How can you use your venier calipers, transfer a design to metal with a scribe tool and we are going to make a start with cutting / sawing. So if you would like to learn and master these skills, maybe this is the moment to give it a go.
    If you have always wanted to become a metalsmith or are interested in making your own jewelry than feel free to watch all 18 episodes of my metalsmithing course. You can find the entire course right here on my youtube channel. Just check out the 'free metalsmithing and jewelry making' playlist.
    The metalsmithing tool kits are no longer available on my website. It was taking up too much time that I would rather spend behind the bench. The companies listed below are stepping in and would love to help you out. Best part: they even offered some great discount codes!
    To end up, I would like to point out that all my videos are and will remain free. In return, it would be awesome if you could take the time to share my channel on your socials or with your metalsmithing friends. That's all. I think it's a privilege to create a community of people doing what I love most. So thank you so much for your support, it means the world to me.
    Have a wonderful day,
    Bregje
    Durston Tools:
    Go to www.durston.com/estona AND use the discount code estona10 to receive a whopping 10% discount on your order at durston tools. They provide all kinds of tools and jewellers furniture.

    Gesswein:
    And finally, there is Gesswein. A family business based in America, but they do ship worldwide. A wonderful company with people eager to help. Dear Bregje, your instruction is absolutely superb! Over 40 years ago, I majored in metalry and created over 30 pieces. I even learned the art of diamond setting. Well, life happened and I sold my tools years ago. I’m now rekindling my love of metalsmithing thanks to YOUR series! I cannot thank you enough for this! Warmly, Manny

    I’m glad I watched this video even though I was already taught how to saw, my own instructor didn’t have the time to actually show me what happens when you saw a thing wrong, so I didn’t know what to watch out for until I made a mistake already. Now I have a better understanding, I hope I am able to go to the workshop next week and try adjusting my seat to my height, I didn’t even think about trying to be comfortable....
    Do you know if there are smaller saws out there? Most of the time I’m having a hard time just keeping my saw straight because the handle is in the way of what I’m trying to cut, or I would be cutting an interior design and I would have to bend over backwards to not bump the handle against my piece every time I need to change angle.

    Thank you so much for this course. I will have to figure out how to set up a corner in my tiny home as a metal smithing studio😅. Thank you so much for doing this. I requested the materials for Christmas and am starting my journey. I am sorry if this is somewhere...but how thick is the metal you are practicing on? The pieces I got are a little flimsy and can be cut with scissors rather than a saw. I also notice you suggest wire as well...is there a gauge you recommend? Thanks again!

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  Před 2 lety

      That is so nice Danielle! I hope you are going to have a lot of fun while practicing. The practice metal is 1,5 mm thick. If you are going to work with wire you could use white that is 1 mm (for jump rings) or 2 mm (for rings) thick.

      If you continue in this course you will find a 'cutting like a pro' video in there. It's all about the right tention on your blade, lubricating it with something like a candlestick and not pushing to hard but letting your blade doing the work. I always use a 2/0 blade in all of my projects, no matter the thickness of the material. I believe the 'rule' is that two of the teeth of the blade should fit in the thickness of your material. But I just don't like switching blades all the time, ;-)

    • @Qnan857
      @Qnan857 Před 16 dny

      Thank you very much for your reply ! :) I did use a candle but it seemed that it was clogging my blade, so I tried putting the candle at the back of the blade instead and I think it works ok now… of course everything else that you’re saying is also true and I’m trying to put it in practice ! Thank you again for your help and all your wonderful tutorials! :)

      Hi Susie, I have never worked with inches before so I am affraid I can't help you out there. I don't know if maybe there are calipers that work with inches?

    Hey Bregje, do you remember the size of your practice plate, heighth and width? I bought a sheet of brass today, its 10 inches long and 4 inches wide. I dont want to mess up the whole sheet for practice.

      @@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials thank you for your answer, it's funny because my mother used to work with and made jewelry, I remember when I has a kid to help her out , doing earrings and bracelets, so now I'm 40 and I start to do it myself, and your videos are been an inspiration. One day I will have some stuff made and I will show you. Now I'm getting all the tools I need for it. Again thank you for the videos they are amazing 🤩

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  Před rokem +2

      Hahaha, that's a good question! When I started out with metalsmithing I followed a course. Everybody there had a different mark. Mine were the 3 yellow dots. That way, seeing as how we were all using the same tools, you would know at the end of the day which tools were your own.

    Should the calipers not be flat on the paper when making the dots for the parallel line so you know the opposite caliper leg is at right angles?

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  Před rokem

      Hi Richie, it has been a while since I have made this video so I don't know exactly what you mean or to which part you are referring. Can you add the timestamp? I can look it back and answer your question.

    • @richiec9077
      @richiec9077 Před rokem +1

      @@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials yeah sure at around 4:10 when you are marking the dots for scribing the parallel line. It just occurred to me that if your line of site is slightly off you may be holding the calipers at a slight angle and making an incorrectly aligned mark. If the calipers where held flat on the paper with the calliper leg aligned with the first line the marks for the second line will surely be more accurate?

    • @richiec9077
      @richiec9077 Před rokem +1

      It may be that you took this into consideration at the time and knew you were holding the calipers upright and using your line of site to compensate the chance of error but I was thinking for beginners it may offer less chance of minor mistakes I hope you understand my point of view thanks

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  Před rokem

      @@richiec9077 ah, now I know what you are talking about. I am only using the tip of the caliper here to mark. If I would lay the calipers flat the tips don’t touch the paper and then my measurements would be off. Holding it straight up or at an angle here doesn’t make a difference. It’s about the tip and where it touches the paper. That won’t change when holding it straight up or at an angle.
