It had to be this long because of all of the historical references that needed including. The day the music died was Feb. 3 1959, the night Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and JP "Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash.

Byrds had the song "8 Miles High"
Girl who sang the blues, Janis Joplin
Satan - Mick Jagger at Altamont,
Father, Son and Holy Ghost - John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King

Mick Jagger is Jack Flash, as in "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Satan was the Hell's Angel who killed a man in front of the stage. The rockumentary "Gimme Shelter" covers the whole thing. Social historians sometimes point to that murder as the end of the sixties. "Did you write the book of love" -- "Book of Love" was a giant hit for The Monotones in 1958.
The line "pink carnation and a pickup truck" references "White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)", a hit for Marty Robbins in 1955. "'Cause fire is the devil's only friend" -- Grateful dead released a sort of bluegrass styled song "Friend of the Devil". They were supposed to play Altamont but refused to go on because of violence in the crowd.
Some speculate that pink carnation is referencing Marty Robbins White Sport Coat (Pink Carnation).
This is a very cryptic song. Don McLean has been asked hundreds of times what it means. His answer has always been. "It means I never have to work again."

A lot of references in the song are made to many artists from the early days of music including Elvis, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Byrds & others. Now you need to react to Home Free's version. Don McLean asked them to collaborate for the 50th anniversary of American Pie. They do a beautiful version!

I was going to post something similar but you already said it. The song starts off with remembrance of the 3 who died in plane crash (Holly et al), then expands into the history of rock and roll up to that point in time.

"What's a Chevy on a levee?" was the question I asked my mom the the first time I heard this song when I was four or five years old way back in 1972 or thereabouts. I bet she was glad I didn't ask her about whiskey and rye! The day the music died is the day Buddy Holly died in a plane crash in 1959. One of his biggest hits was "That'll Be The Day", with a chorus that ends with the line "Because that'll be the day when I die". So the good old boys drinking whiskey and rye were singing an ode to the late Buddy Holly. I grew up with this song and I've always thought it was one of the greatest. It defined t hee early 70s radio play. I saw Don McClean in concert and every single person in the cconcert venue sang every word to this song. When he performed Vincent, it was pure silence. You could hear a pin drop. Thaat was t he reverence the audience expressed to McClean andf the song. It was amazing. Dream come true. Wedding receptions still have American pie on their play list even today.

Learned all the words before I knew what the song meant… knew it was sad but didn’t know about the plane crash. Later learned Country Singer Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane Buddy Holly was flying and the guilt was horrible on him for many many years.
That's not the complete true story. Waylon told the whole story in a documentary. He never gave up his seat on the plane to Buddy; they all drew straws for seats on the plane, and Waylon drew the short straw. As he was getting on the plane, Buddy told Waylon jokingly, "Have fun freezing your balls off on that bus." And Waylon jokingly said back, "Yeah? And I hope yer f**kin' plane crashes." THAT'S what ate him up for years.

@@micheled6111 Maybe I was mistaken about the straw thing. I'm probably remembering the movie scene from "La Bamba" with that. But Waylon did say that a couple of them tossed coins for the seat. So there's that. And the fact remains that the very last thing Waylon said to Buddy was "I hope your plane crashes". Yeah, it was a joke when he said it,, but given what happened....
At just over 8 minutes, this #1 hit had to be split in half because the entire song would not fit on the one side of the 45 rpm single! Don's follow up single is a shorter song called Dreidle.

I remember reading that the "levee" was the name of the local bar where Don McLean and his friends drank when he was in college. Drove his Chevy to the Levee but the Levee was dry (closed).
My favorite Don McLean song is 'Vincent' - a beautiful song about Vincent Van Gogh - the famous artist - he is a great songwriter - but if you decide to react to it - do the older version - not the one when he was old.
There was a 3 minute version that the radio stations used but most people liked the song so much they wanted the long version.
I love the on and on storytelling of this song.

The importance of "American Pie" to America's musical and cultural heritage was recognized by the Songs of the Century education project which listed the song as the number five song of the twentieth century. Did you know that this song was about the crash when Buddy Holly, the big bopper and another one I have to look it up crashed the day the music died. I did not know that I’ve always loved this song, especially the part where he sings, and the three men I admire most the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost. That part gives me shivers. But yes, this is about a tragedy. But a beautiful, classic tune.

Took a long time to get this on the air because of the length. It became an anthem for the greats we lost.
😂😂😂 Biz, as you can see from the other comments, the explanation is longer than the song - that alone is a clue to its greatness. Yes, in minutes, it was long. It was a breakthrough for recroded music that they played it on the radio. Played the hell out of it. It was an instant and enduring (more than 50 years later we are still glad to hear it and singing every word) classic. Undeniably so. Even our parents and grandparents had to acknowledge that.
Understand, nobody is angry about your complaint about the length. Older viewers like me (63) probably found that amusing. You’re a young man, none of the references in this song would have meant anything to you. For those of use who began life in the 50s, lived through the tumultuous 60s…we could have listened to another 8 minutes of McClean’s brilliant storytelling. He perfectly captured the times and where we were at that time. It was urgently needed - I think that is the first part of his brilliance, sensing the hole we had in our lives and filling it. Young Americans, until we heard this song, didn’t even realize we were ravenous; voraciously so. As a generation. We spent much more time looking forward than back.
I’m liking this video because I like you, and you did a great job of being you. I read an interview with McLean several years ago. The reported asked him what American Pie really meant. He said ‘it means I don’t have to work any more if I don’t want to.’ 😊

English is my 2nd language. like someone else has said on here I knew the words to this before I could even know who all the characters were. Even without getting into the lyrics just see the range of Don's voice in just one song, the song is not too long people's attention span these days is next to zero, appreciate your honesty but if you start choosing songs or whatever by their lenght you will miss out big time.

Ut had to be long to get in all the references to the music and musicians of the 50's and 60's--it's a history lesson in music and lyrics. Without that it's just a kind of catchy song. I'd just add the mentions of Jack Flash, the Devil, Angels from Hell were abiout the Rolling Stones at the Altamont concert, when Hells' Angels murdered someone in the audience and beat up band members--coming a year after Woodstock, it was also considered the "day the music died."
Woodstock was August 15-18, 1969. Altamont was December 6, less than four months later. I was seven years old at the time. I grew up listening to “American Pie” and hearing about Woodstock but I knew nothing about Altamont until the last year, when I read about it in the comments of another reaction video. I mentioned it to my sister, who is three years older than me, and she’d never heard of it either.

Yeah, coming into this song without some reference it's no surprise it seemed long. He's referencing an era and many of those references are extremely dated. If you don't get all the refences (and there are many,) it's just confusing.

Nope, takes the whole 8 minutes to tell the story and express the hurt and loss felt by so many due to the deaths of these great performers and paying tribute to others as well. Probably impossible to understand every aspect of this great song.

It was never one of my favorite songs either. I respect it for the way it pays tribute to the history of rock music up to that point in time. And this was a hugely popular song. Just not a favorite of mine.
Sorry to disagree with you. There's a lot going on in the lyrics of the song. There are a number of sites with an insight to the lyrics that may change your mind on the length of the song. Personally, I don't think it's too long at all.
