I have been watching Ian McShane since the UK Series Lovejoy last century. He is a main character in American Gods(Amazon Prime). I have been in lust with Timothy all these years. See him in St. Claritas Diet(Netflix)
Rhiannon Walker i didnt know about american gods until you just brought it up! Thank you for introducing me to it. If youre a fan of tims work in Deadwood i may suggest you watch Justified. He plays that role incredibly and reminds me of deadwood!

Deadwood will go down as THE best western Series. The writing, acting and sets were just amazing. So looking for forward to another of Al's sililoquy's in the new movie.

It is likely the best series of all time- not just the best western. The writing was magnificent, acting was brilliant, and the storylines were complex and fascinating. Add the constant tension between the characters and you have a masterpiece known as “Deadwood.”

Around 35:10 when Frienberg is describing a "Deadwood moment" and he describes the scene where the minister goes in the hardware store and asks Bullock and Starr and asks them "Are you guys my friends?" (because of the brain tumor playing up on him), I literally got chills... and I haven't scene that episode in over 10 years! That's how good David Milch's writing is!
I knew exactly what scene he was going to refer to as soon as he said S1 E10. I just rewatched the entire series over the last month or so, so I have that advantage. But that might be the most beautiful scene in the series. The preacher was amazing and one reason (Keith Carradine being another) why S1 is the best of the bunch.
I'm rewatching this series now, and man that scene is so powerful. Many of the scenes that involve the minister are incredibly touching.
The fact that McKinnon was never even nominated for an Emmy for that performance as the minister is absurd.@@Joe-zk7ps
Jane was a one of a kind character, that we may never again see within our lifetime. Amazingly done, love you so much!
I loved the scene where Jane confronts Al in Doc's house, as Al approaches Sophia.
So many of them are; Farnum, The Preacher and Joanie, Trixie and Al, Doc and Charlie, Wu and Mr W, Jewell, Dan, Alma, Cy...each unforgettable characters....We may never see their like again, or forget them.
RIP Powers Boothe. What a pleasure it must have been to have acted on a show like that!

Pancreatic Cancer killed him from what I understand. Gosh if he only could had lived long enough to be in the movie. I hope it shows up on CZcams movie selections. .

Joannie Stubbs is one of those often overlooked minor characters but the more I watch 'Deadwood' the more I like her character because she's actually a caring, good person. McShane's Al of course was the crowning jewel in this ensemble. Al was of course villainous in many ways but Milch would bring out these little glimpses of goodness in Al. Small they were, but they were epic whenever we the audience had the privilege of seeing it. I wished I'd appreciated this series more whenever I'd catch an episode during it's run. Much like 'Rome' I expected shows like this to last at least 5 seasons. Instead both were canceled in their prime to make way for the fantasy series which shall not be named that was like flogging a dead horse after the source material was exhausted. Cherish the 3 seasons and consider ourselves lucky that the movie was made for fans to settle things.

Thanks for posting this segment, Great seeing the cast after all these years; Robin Weigert's (Subtle) laugh reminds me how much i missed of Calamity Jane...all great actors working in conjunction, performing a great conclusion... I'm going to visit Deadwood, SD, just because of this show...
Thanks so much for this, what an interesting & touching tribute to Deadwood, the Deadwood movie, and David Milch. As a fan from the very beginning of the show it’s rare to hear new stories or experiences from the people involved but there were quite a few from the panel. I found myself laughing and getting a little teary as well. It was delightful to watch for those of us who couldn’t be there.
Still my favorite show, ever. Western or not it was just epic.

It is very rare to see so many actors glowingly talk about a project, and say the same things. It often seems that once a project is done, the actors don't want to talk about it anymore, much less reference the character in future interviews. You can tell this was truly a special moment for all involved. I can watch this series over and over, and revisit it every 3 to 4 years and seem to enjoy it more with each passing viewing.

Thanks for the post. I just finished watching the movie but I wasn't quite ready to let go of the feeling of having Deadwood back. This hour has given me the chance to say goodbye.
The scene they are talking about where Reverand Smith is with Sol and Seth is a beautiful emotional scene.

Love it, never thought it would happen but this series is hands down the greatest thing filmed, movie or TV that ever happened. It had everything; Writting (dialogue and story lines), Acting, Production, and anything else that goes into it. The things we don't know but notice if it's absent. It seriously ruined TV for me because I judge everything now to this standard. People are telling me all time about new shows and the first 5 minutes I watch, I am picking them apart. There are good works out there, but if they're lucky, they hit this standard for a portion of a season, let alone every episode for 36 episodes. Not a bad episode, not a bad line and nothing that coould be removed without changing the whole dynamic. Truly an astronomical talent.

I rewatch this series every few years and every time am blown away by the caliber of the cast at every level. It's like a whose-who of the most talented character actors of the last 40 years.
Such a well written series ,from Al to Jewell all the characters are memorable ,loved it.
A heartfelt thank you for posting this. For what it’s worth, here’s my opinion as an audience member & a 50 yr old human, who originally watched this series during a time of great loss & upheaval in my life 13 yrs ago. It was enthralling then. You could see it was a masterpiece. I knew, that what I was witnessing had no equal at that time. It felt the same way when I’d discovered Tolkien, GRRM, watched Game of Thrones). It rose to another level. I didn’t understand why it resonated with me so deeply, & on so many levels back then. I hadn’t the wisdom yet. Now, having watched the film, having since watched some interviews of Milch (by the way, I’m a retired scientist.. certainly no literary or theatre expert), & having had the last 13 years to experience, grow, reflect, age, & contemplate upon the meaning of it all, well.. now I see this series for what it truly is, bc I’ve been there too now. David Milch, without ever knowing it, helped me (& I suspect many others), raise myself to another level. Upped my game in understanding my own human condition.. & that no matter what pain I suffer of the heart, or failing of the body, somebody, somewhen, has felt it all, experienced it all too. Among many many things of which I’m not qualified to opine on, David Milch is a polymath, & a true genius. For myself, I feel deep gratitude he shared his storytelling genius with all those absolutely brilliant cast members, writers, & directors, and with audience members like myself. Having read what I just wrote, it sounds like I’m trying for my own Oscar or Emmy lol. Nevertheless, f**k it. I’ll let it stand.

Brilliant series and a great film to wrap it all up at last...
32:29 I just realised.. there was no camera work like you see today. No tracking shots that followed someone’s run, only different angles, power angles and slow stationary turning type shots. Lack of camera work made us focus in on movement and therefore the characters like some voyeur.... fucking brilliant!
One of the best in this century so far
I just watched all 3 seasons this past week or so for the first time. NEVER have I become so attached to TV/movie characters in my life. I am 38 years old and just found mt favorite TV show. The Office is the best written comedy ever which Mr Olyphant once had a cameo.

I discovered the series about a year ago (I'm from Europe (Germany), I suppose it was more popular in the U.S. 🤷🏻♀️?).
I was looking for a good book about Deadwood, and I stumbled across the series, and thought, hmm, why not take a look. That "take a look" turned into binge-watching all three seasons, then buying the DVDs 😂. Was completely captured. Now I'm waiting for a possibility to watch the movie (I think in Germany, it's not available yet 😕).
I got to meet Will Sanderson this week he lives near me. Great guy. Deadwood is amazing and I told Will how much the series meant to me. I am so glad we finally get this finale we deserve.

Regarding the question about Milch on spirituality and death, Molly Parker's oration to Sophia on the subject is one of the most perfect and moving soliloquies in all of literature.
They made one of the true great westerns
Best tv show ever. Nothing tops it. Not The Sopranos, not Breaking Bad. It’s not a western, it transcends genre. The most beautiful written dialogue and some of the most incredibly multifaceted characters ever. No one person is good or bad. They’re just people. No show better encapsulates society in microcosm than Deadwood.
cant wait for the movie but afraid of the crash afterwards knowing it is finished. this to me is the most fascinating viewing i can do when i sit watching or even just listen to the dialogue when im busy doing something. it is as if i am there living this story with them. what an amazing time in American history

this is the only show I've ever wanted to watch behind the scenes. It mystifies me as to how they created something so vastly superior to anything else
The movie is great. Not perfect, but a fitting, emotional ending to one of the great all time TV shows.
"gary cooper" the "strong silent type" mentioned repeatedly by Tony Soprano, and it's concurrently aired show on HBO, Deadwood's writer David Milch mentioning the Hays Code which gave birth to this archetype, and which he manifested in Sheriff Bullock.

A fabulous gathering for Deadwood fans, but they couldn't spare an extra camera? Why on earth didn't they have more than one? All we can see is the back of the host's head, and can't see the actor's expressions. Really frustrating that he cut off Kim Dickens every time she began to speak. But I watched it anyway.
So weak! A camera set on a tripod and that's it.
Never been a fan of the Western genera in my life, but Deadwood changed all that. This is perhaps one of the greatest stories Hollywood has ever told, with characters so rich it’s almost inconceivable. Seth, Al, Jane, Sol, etc, most of which are based upon real people, are now forever immortalized.
I truly envy the actors and writers who worked on "Deadwood". By all accounts, it was an incredible experience.

The movie was good but for a show as exceptional as Deadwood......I really wish they would have given us a 3-5 episode series ending instead of a movie that isn't even 2 hours long. Still grateful to even get the film. Easily one of the greatest shows ever produced

Deadwood Moment: Al and Bullock are fighting in the mud of the thoroughfare, Swearingen is preparing to stab Bullock to death, and he sees the boy, looking at him. He has no idea the boy is Bullock's nephew/son, but he stops, looks the kid in the eye and says “Welcome to Deadwood!!” THAT's the Deadwood Moment.

Half way through they still not bring up how David start to rebase his writing on actors hired in the show, not his story roles any more. He talked about it. And this is unique in this show and about David. The fearlessness is pure insight and ration backed by ocean of passion
The show lasted 7 seasons, but was knocked off the air with a Garth Brooks Christmas Show. The original Al Swearengen was played by William Shattner.

I can't recall a finer farewell to a brilliant series, and I couldn't ask for one. Magical, especially when you take into account David Milch's cognitive decline. So happy that he was able to write the end, beautiful.
Just as when I got to the end of Season 3 the first time I went back to the top to watch a second time, I watched the movie, welled up, and watched it again. I surprised myself by shedding tears when Charlie was murdered. I was so angry. How fucking good is the ability to create that kind of drama. I wanted them to kick Hearst to death.
The longer I listen to this, the more the sense strengthens that David Milch who, it has been reported, is in the 'middle stage' of Alzheimer's, is not faring well. I hope he's comfortable. What a great gift he gave us in Deadwood.
