David is one of the rare ones. Superior intellect but ALSO with a deep understanding of human nature. So many intelligent people I've met are also very sheltered and naïve.
It was a long time that I went without watching television, but Deadwood made me sit still for an hour every week, glued to the screen. I truly loved this show.
watched it with my parents, my dad looves westerns (has a framed pic of john wayne that mom will not let him put up lol) they loooved it he did get allowed to put it up in the spare room i sleep in when i visit, the room has no windows, and mom does not have to see it often. and dad still gets his john wayne pic, its a win/win
Greatest show ever on TV. Definitely the greatest-written show; only Mad Men comes close to the brilliance of dialogue and character development. Just gets better and better every time I revisit it. I find it even better than, say, The Wire and The Sopranos because it's more consistent - no weak episodes - and it's much less cynical and more compassionate. Deadwood is very dark and violent, but at the same time there's always this light of goodness that shines through in every episode. It finds the good in even the most flawed character. Every character is just beautifully written and all too human. And the way most of the people of the town gradually put aside their pride and connect to form one organism is beautiful, reminds of the Corinthians passage that the Reverend reads at Bill's funeral. Milch is a genius.
Watching the genius of Mr. Milch ,the acting and production talent brought into Maximus is addictive. The lighting is amazing, and the Gustavo Santaolalla music haunting .My family thinks I am weird watching it over and over, even not in episode order. Spectacular acting, wow, but disappointing that it did not continue for years beyond season three. Feel I have been denied some existential essence.
Very illuminating to see the process by which the show was made. Watching deadwood, there are so many times where there will be dialogue and I just ask myself, 'what did they just say?'. David is a master of language and human behavior.
A superb mini-doc showing a unique genius at work. Being an IA member, I salute my brothers and sisters who had a critical role in making Deadwood real, all working in tandem with the finest collection of actors in television/motion picture history. HBO, having broken our hearts on a decision based on costs rather than viewer popularity, I rate that decision as one of the most boneheaded moves ever. Kinda like the time Coke reintroduced itself to create a marketing disaster. It was the same bean-counter stupidity with this superb series.
What a brilliant and beautiful program. Such a shame that it was cancelled last minute by HBO due to studio politics and money. I would have loved to see the show make it 5 seasons or more. I know they were planning on depicting the first big fire, and we are all deprived of seeing that.
I watched and thoroughly enjoyed Deadwood and for good reason. The writings, actors and production value were top notch. Seeing the behind the scenes and especially the actors responses to the process made it all make sense.

To see David Milch's writing process, amazes me. W. Earl Brown who played Dan, had the perfect way of describing David's process for writing the dialogue. David Milch has one of those minds that you just don't see very often. It's not only sad, but quite ironic, that he now has Alzheimer's disease. What are the odds that someone so brilliant gets Alzheimer's. I can't believe they canceled this show after only 3 seasons. Other shows production crews need to learn from how this show was made. Deadwood could've been one of those shows that had 10 seasons or maybe even more. So damn sad. I wish they'd do a Deadwood revival, or a spin-off called "The Gem" and just have Al be alive, showing he never died.

So interesting that you would say that. My spouse swears that The Wire is the best ever. I think that I must place it fourth, after Deadwood, Mad Men, and The Sopranos, based purely on the quality of the writing. There has never been TV dialogue like Deadwood, ever. And there are so many scenes in Mad Men when I said to myself (or out loud), “wow, that is good writing.” The Sopranos and The Wire have amazing stories and characters, maybe the best ever, but the writing in Deadwood and Mad Men is unmatched.
I think I understand what you mean, even as someone who loves the show. But I don't think the writing process had anything to do with *why* it was cancelled in reality. I have a similar sensation, in my case, having this glimps of the process gave me the impression that it most have been too exhausting for David and the original team of writters/producers to continue. He and the others had the chance to taste the grand result of the method being used, but also somehow understood that that level of quality can only be sustained for a short while. Ultimately people have lifes to live, families to love, homes to keep warm; art cant be that intense without starting to take away too much of you.
I have yet to see the Dead wood series. And have never seen the movie. I wonder is the movie free standing ? In that no previous viewing of the series is required to understand the movie ? Or is it a requirement to see the series first in order to understand the movie ?

The problem with David Milch's writing is that all the characters sound basically the same. Although he may have written dialogue in a style true to the era, he got too lost in this and failed to recognize that it could not apply to everyone. And when one formula is spoken by everyone, there are no individuals left save for the clothes they wear, and the separate roles each of them plays. Calamity Jane sounds like Al Swearingen and Al Swearingen sounds like Seth Bullock, and Seth Bullock sounds like Charlie Utter, and Charlie Utter sounds like Dan, and Dan sounds like Trixie, and so on. I love this show as much as anyone. It was painful to see it end so abruptly. That was a huge mistake on the part of HBO. If they did have cause to cancel the show, it was for the reason I mentioned above. Every single character spoke, with a very small exception, in that same exact style of extreme profanity interlaced with pedantic purple prose, poetic verses of Shakespearian meets Greek mythological tragedy, and high speak of educated men in a camp where none of them, except the Doc, were educated beyond the 8th grade. (High school was almost like a college education is today.) Milch is a highly intelligent and talented creator who earned an estimated $100 million in his lifetime, but gambled it all away and now owes the IRS an estimated $17 million. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about two decades ago followed by Alzheimer's Disease in 2015. His memoir, "Written by.." was written with the help of his wife and two of his three children and published last year. Critics say it is both brilliant and depressing, and comes from a man who knows himself. He is 78 years-old.

You're right and you're wrong. True enough, if you watch and study Deadwood to the bone, as it sounds like you have, you will discover SOME repetition and overlay when it comes to certain characters and their internal and external dialogue; sometimes in the selection of certain words or in the larger rhythm and rhyme of the grammar. Two points in contradiction however; first, even though at times certain characters in certain episodes DO SEEM to experience some amount of "language blend" (this I shall call it) Milch ALWAYS manages to differentiate the characters and prevent a single voice from emanating through them all like a hive mind by ASSIGNING TOTALLY DIFFERENT MOTIVES
For me, Season 1 was perfect and 2 was nearly as good. I agree 3 is not the equal of 1 but it is not that far off from 2. To suggest that 3 was a "bad season" and shouldn't count as part of the genius of the show requires explanation indeed. Especially without getting S4 and S5 to finish that story and be able to view S3 in the full context that we were never able to. In some ways, S3 feels like a setup or a prelude to a future season in which Al, having learned from his first run in, finds a way to deal w/ Hearst more successfully. The movie seemed to fit this description somewhat, but with Bullock standing in for Al (who was a shadow of his old self in the movie).
I flew through the first two seasons, but I agree, I felt that the third season started to really drag. Nobody seemed able to make up their minds all of a sudden.
Man was a genius with the English language. If he'd only cut the cussing by half, (or limiting it to characters like Al, Jane, Trixie, Dan, Johnny, Cy and sometimes Bullock) maybe Deadwood would of been more popular with the general population and HBO wouldn't allow it to abruptly end
If you're referring to Milch, that's unfair. He's a highly empathetic person (as great writers are) and beloved by most colleagues. A loving guy, emotionally open, and he doesn't search for or crave power and recognition. Vain? Sure. Egotistical? Maybe. Obsessive compulsive? Yes, absolutely. And, by his own admission, a traumatized soul with addiction problems.

It may sound funny, but I wouldn't put it past him. Milch was obsessive compulsive and had very peculiar habits especially during his dope fiend days.
