I worked in the Prop Department on seasons 2 and 3. Just before the movie was set to start filming I went to see Jim Beaver act in a play at a small theater. Before the curtain rose in walked Dayton Callie and Garret Dilahunt, so we huddled up and talked about our days on the series and being excited about the movie about to happen. I asked Garret if he was going to be in it and he said “ Oh I don’t see how I could be. I’ve been two characters already.” I replied “Garret, I bet that if you just showed up on set to say hi, David will put you in there somewhere.” He shrugged his shoulders and smiled. Looks like he visited the set, and when I watched the movie I let out a scream when seeing him in the show.

I was so impressed with Ray McKinnon's portrayal of the Reverend. He should have won an award for that.

His whole story line broke my heart. He played his part exquisitely. Doc’s soliloquy ranting to God for the Reverend’s sake while Al got the job done with beautiful compassion. The scenes with the reverend were done using heartfelt and well considered insight. Just truly beautiful but so sad.

Wu was every bit Al's equal as far as being a boss goes. Wu was the only one that could make Al smile and it was wonderful when we saw it.

They even cut about 40 minutes out ? Grrrr. Then, indeed, yes, give us a directors cut / extended version, so we at least get to see that as well !

On a film a few years ago I asked one of the actors from John From Cincinnati about Milch. He said Milch had the ability within a few minutes of meeting you to understand what makes you tick. He said within 30 minutes of meeting Milch he was a convert and would have done anything to work with him. He also said once they started shooting it was a crazy set where everyone was confused but he still was a convert.

Keone's grandchildren run around his yard shouting Mr. Wu's "San Francisco" catchphrase at the top of their lungs whilst intermittently giggling uncontrollably !

This happens to more people than one would think, even outside the film industry. You could be doing great work, efficient, and smooth with no problems making money for your employer. Invariably someone, usually in management, will come along and blow it all to pieces.

We were in Deadwood when we found out that there wouldn't be a 5th season. It was a shock and we couldn't believe that they would have cancelled such a successful show.

Sooo Milch let the show die rather than make a deal for 2 movies or 2 1/2 seasons.. then ultimately conceded to 1 movie 15 years later… i respect the guy enormously but I think it’s safe to say the stubbornness and hubris of his characters is a reflection of his own. Also, unpopular opinion: after rewatching season 3, I don’t think it needed more than 1 more season. It’s the weakest of the 3 seasons… some great moments, but the whole acting troupe plot.. i fast forwarded through most of as i had 15 years ago. I wonder if Milch actually had a long term idea for the show that required more than that; or if he just didn’t want to be told what to do and when to end it. Brilliant writer though

I knew why it ended abruptly after 3rd season… the 3rd season was a f*cking train wreck. I’ve recommended the series to many people… but I always tell them… “watch two seasons and then for the love of God STOP.” Of course they never listen… but every time they reach out to apologize and tell me I was exactly right… and they regretted watching the third season. But to this day I have no idea HOW it happened… what went so wrong. But obviously no… it couldn’t continue.

HBO wanted to put their money on John from Cincinnati which was god awful and the worst move in HBO ever made. Deadwood was and is a classic
