Canon C100 Mark II Review - After 6 Years of Ownership

  • Emmy Award winning filmmaker, Brian Kissig reviews the Canon 100 Mark II after owning it for 6 years. This is a good quality C series cinema camera, but lacks 4K functionality and the high frame rates that mirrorless cameras offer. Cinema cameras are great for people who are serious about cinematography, but is this one that you should be in 2023? There may be better options.

    Still waiting for a client to request a 4k project. They just don't seem to care. 1080 is plenty to view on a projector, monitor and online. What they do want is for us to tell a great story.

      Same here. I try to offer 4K but no one wants it (one even asked for 1080 delivery which he was going to upscale to 4K for CZcams, and turned down 4K delivery from me 🤷‍♂️)

    I'm a member of the C100M2 cult and I totally relate to the love. The C100 M2 is just so well designed and so reliable that its hard not be intensely loyal to it. The built-in ND's alone is one of the reasons I'm having such a hard time going to a good mirrorless 4K camera now. I really have been spoiled using a true cine camera and it's hard to go back. I still plan to hold onto my C100's for long events and concerts. As I said in my recent review, many C100 users including myself are amazed that such tiny files with a mediocre codec grade so well - just an amazing camera.

      I cant justify a 4k or 8k camera as I really dont need it nor would I get any benefits from it, this camera is great because it doesnt take huge video files and has ND's its just a solid workhorse and newer cameras arent offering anything unless you spend a boatload of money.

    • @Sutterjack
      @Sutterjack Před rokem +1

      @@pilsplease7561 I have a love/hate relationship with my C100 in 2023 (though it's so freakin' reliable it almost trumps everything else). Sometimes I see beautiful, sharp footage with painless rich color...but that said sometimes the lack of dynamic range and pixelation in the shadows really shows me how dated this sensor/codec is. I plan to hold onto mine as safety/B cams for long events, but the camera is obsolete - I'm just not ready to pay for a new cine body and faster computer that handles the 4k just yet.

    I've been using the c100 mk2 since 2016. It's been an incredible workhorse, and in my view the IQ for event / conference / live shows continues to be very strong. I'll continue to utilise this beauty till it drops.

    I definitely think it's still worth it in 2023. I've recently talked about this camera on my channel and it still holds up. People complain about not having 4K. Edit your video and export in 4K. Problem solved. Or better yet...throw all the clips in media encoder and re-export all of them out in 4K. The 8bit codec, while 8bit, still looks good and it's almost some sort of witchcraft that it still looks that good. I've also recommended the owlbot color profile for this camera as it looks WAAAAAAY better than the built-in c-log. The camera is only missing useable face tracking autofocus. You can also still buy the camera brand new through Adorama, but yes...B&H has sent the camera to the grave...well body only. You can still get it brand new from B&H with the crappy 24-105 lens and at that point...definitely not worth it.

    I have both MK1 and MK2, and the MK1 picture looks better, more cinematic. But the MK2 has actual continuous auto-focus and a lot of little improvements that make it much easier to use. If you're gonna use MK1's HDMI output, be aware it outputs PsF, which is a pain to deal with, but I discovered that if you plug it into Ninja Blade, and then use the Blade's HDMI output, it actually does a pulldown and you get real progressive HDMI.

    Just got an incredible deal for one of these cameras and they immediately fit in with my sony mirrorless. Using them as my "vintage" camera in my edits by adding tons of grain and 16fps plus handholding it with a 18-135mm makes it feel like a super8 camera more than just slapping on a filter on the sonys. Plus it's built like a tank which works for the weddings I do. They certainly made something amazing with this camera.

    Hey...I have this camera and I use it mostly with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8...I also bought the huge 50-100mm f1.8!! I use them mostly for interviews...but for weddings now I use a Sony FX30...however, I have decided that I will continue to use the C100 mk2 for weddings and some live events that will end up in 1080p- I prefer to use it on a tripod- but I have used it on a sturdy monopod. It's not too bad. Even though I shoot in 4k with the FX30 (and also a Canon 90D-it's 4k is not as good as the 4k from the Sony FX30) I always downrez to 1080p timeline-my clients don't need 4k for the most part. I won't buy a Ninja V or any external recorder-the original mp4 footage is nice even in Wide DR. I always bring lights to my events-even a little bit of light helps. Now to the question...I need a longer zoom for interviews and to record speeches- and some run and gun on a monopod- I have several STM lenses- the 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 STM is ok but I wish I could get a good f2.8 IS for video...the 24-105mm f4 L is nice (but it becomes 36mm to 150mm f4 on the C100 correct) and that F4 is not appealing...what lens would you get today in 2023 for the C100 mk2? I will keep this for as long as I can! The C200 would be too much...and a camcorder like the Canon XF605 (damn I like Canon stuff!) just won't give the same video quality...thanks for the video!
