    1. Vary your fasts
    2. Avoid processed foods (look to see if you’re eating toxic foods). Go clean foods!!
    3. Exercise- vary it and make sure to give recovery days

Mike from High Intensity Health says that walking is not enough. You need to have at least, at the very least, 8000 steps a day combined with exercise. Spiking cortisol when we:
Fasting - we spike a bit of cortisol, our body adapts well to a bit of stress. Do fasting variations so the variation ensures cortisol doesn’t stay high. Don’t do the same fast everyday, especially the OMAD fast.
Food - highly processed food spikes our cortisol. Sixty percent of grocery store foods are high in sugar and seed oils. Am I eating toxic food? Is my food clean…natures carbs? All the extra cortisol gots into fat reserves.
Exercise - when pushing our body metabolically through exercise we need to be sure to have recovery days. Vary exercise. Push hard but follow up with walks. Not every exercise has to be all out. Take walks, relax in the sunshine , etc.
Thoughts - our mind set matters. Listen to your self talk How am I talking to myself? Are my thoughts negative? Am I kind to myself? What am I reading? What types of people am I talking to?
Turn off the tv, find new positive friendships…immerse yourself in a positive environment.
Healing g takes time. Fall in love with our beautiful bodies!

I lost the belly weight by going keto, but before going keto, you have to be careful in advance to make sure that you supplement with all the vitamins and minerals that keto leaches out of you. Nobody told me about that! So, along with the fat, I lost a lot of collagen. It aged me by about 10 years in less than 6 months! And it's a lot harder to get collagen back than it is to prevent losing it in the first place. It's two years since I went keto and intermittent fasting, and I'm just now starting to level out and regain some collagen! But I have kept the weight off the entire time. I went from a size 6 to a size 2 in just 6 months!

Same. I have on my weighing app a whole year of going up and down 2-5 lbs. I was in the gym every day, eating very low cal for an entire year at 300lbs. I was super fit ...but fat. The fat would not shift. My cortisol was through the roof and I was starving. Weight loss happens with watching insulin (remove all sugars and sweeteners) and low grade exercise like walking and moderate lifting. Lots of sleep, water, light exercise, decent fasts but not too many, calming techniques, plenty of rest, and good whole food in a healthy calorie deficit... and patience! That is the key. This is all people need. I've been on this journey and researching for a very long time ...I've done it all wrong over and over. My eyes are open now.

Dr Mindy, most of us that are struggling to lose weight are doing all the right things that you mentioned and are abiding by your great suggestions, but they aren't helping because of one thing: stress. I'm not referring to stress from fasting or from exercise or from unhealthy processed foods, but real life mental and emotional stress - such as from our jobs or from caring for a very sick or terminally ill family member. I'm in my late 50s, post-menop, and prediabetic with NAFLD. I started my IF/Keto journey in Jan '24. Been doing all the right things and am now down about -33 lbs, feeling pretty good. Began wearing a CGM for about 8 weeks ago. Until reacently, didn't really have any stress in my life. My weight "plateued" in March/April, I think it was my body telling me to take it easy. I began walking 30m several times a week, tried varying my fasts, but my weight sort of just fluctuated -/+ 2-3 lbs, never really went down and stayed down. I gave up on fasting for a little while and stuck to healthy keto. Then in early May, I decided it had been long enough. I followed an 18/6 IF protocol for 6 straight days and lost 7 lbs! It was great to break through the plateu finally, but my body said "not so fast" (no pun intended) and I immediately added back 2 lbs. Then two weeks ago my job unexpectedly became highly stressful. For the last two weeks I have seen with my own eyes in the CGM app that my blood glucose levels are now way higher than they had been before the stress was introduced. Yesterday I fasted 19 hours and ate two meals. When I stepped on the scale this morning, I expected to see my number just a little lower or about the same as yesteday. I'm mean, why not, right? I'm doing what I've always done and it's worked in the past. Wrong! It actually went up 2.6 lbs. I was shocked! There is no logical reason for that. It's stress, I know it is. Or more accurately, it's the hormone cortisol that is causing my blood glucose to be high which is affecting my ability to burn fat. It's frustrating, but I just have to deal with it and stay patient. I will try a 3 days water fast to see what happens. If my weight doesn't go down or immediately rebounds, then I know that the only thing for me to do (for now) is to stay the course, trust the process, and stick to what I know has been working for me. Once the stress is gone, I know I'll start losing more weight again. Meditation, light exercise, yeah those are all good, but they don't remove the cortisol.

Goodness, too much exercise totally threw me back into cortisol imbalance and caused a rebound of insomnia a few weeks ago!!! I loove to work out, especially fell in love with dancing work outs, but they are really vigorous (basically 30 min of lots of jumping pumping). And then this all plays mind games because I failed amd this causes evem more stress, f ing vicious circle!!! Also with fasting I tend to overdo it, because I feel so good not eating. Goodness, I am an overperformer in so many areas of my life. 🤣 but its okay. Getting back now into track of loosing that weight, 10kg to go. And now that I know what caused that circle, that I really need to watch out for the cortisol for me personally. Magnesium helps me a lot here though. And God sure is the biggest help!!!

@brendakemp9060 for me, mindfulness means thinking about what I'm thinking about. If I'm ruminating on the people I dislike at work (a common theme lol), I catch myself and say two things. Say, I am in this moment right now, not the past or the present, but here and now being my best self, I put my hand over my heart and breath in purity. This is a question on fasting but not related to cortisol. I’m hoping you’ll still answer. I’m trying to heal naturally after a hormone positive breast tumor was removed Jan this year. (Skipped the radiation-chemo/drugs). I’ve been researching and have seen/heard conflicting info that fasting can starve tumor cells. But then also saw that it can cause them to grow. Would you share what’s true on fasting & tumor cells? Does it actually starve their blood supply & kill them off or fuel their growth??
