We all know and love the Eheim Skim 350, it does a great job in keeping aquarium surface clean from floating plant particles and nasty surface film. However it can become a trap for shrimps, fish and snails. They can get sucked inside accidentally, or they go inside on their own, while they looking for food and get trapped. No chance to escape.

Best protection is ladies black stockings secured with elastic rubber band. That also traps flouting parcels and you wash it and reuse it forever

Jurijs Jutjajevs I have Dennerle 6w and 8w led light and they shine too bright in my eyes when I look at my aquariums. I would like to make a light cover (cap) for the 2 aquarium lights. This is something I have been planning to do for some time but don’t have a 3D printer.
I have a self made timer but don't have 3D printer to design the case for it. So, i would probably make a case for that if i got the printer.

I actually designed and printed my own skimmer system which connects directly the HOB filters I use (Don't have room in the budget for the expensive pumps and stuff). I definitely agree on using the smaller openings on the floater👍🏻

A great topic, I have never used a skimmer, but have wondered about adventurous tank mates. I have found shrimp in filters and snail and shrimp outside the tank. This seems to be a good solution. Thanks, jim

love the concept of a central tower...
its a custom build 180p by the German aquarium manufacturer EMMEL, they have produced for ADA in the past. Staghorn algae features the same scape
I am more interested in that center mounted lily pipe system. That looks interesting
its a dry chamber so both filters, skimmer, sensors etc all are mounted in the center and the aquarium is free standing with no wires or tubings on the outside

I print almost everything these days, rc planes too. But AQ related I printed some different filter inlets, wider and thinner, depending on the size of my fry's. Thank you for showing us this! :)
Sometimes I would print stuff too, but then I don’t have a 3D printer and learning how to use it, would probably take a lot of time
@@JurijsJutjajevs depends, if you don't buy the cheapest printer, it's more plug and play. Only designing objects is not so trivial. If you need something printed let me know, happy to help a master scaper! :)
this is a great idea, as i own this skimmer and have stopped using it because of shrimp and fish getting sucked in. It's a great idea to have the winner of the giveaway announced on Liquid Nature's channel.
I put all mine on a WiFi plug, so the skimmer turns off at night which helps what ever is caught come out. Hope these come ready available to the public
We tried the Green Aqua version and it failed several times removing the scum.

Must had been an earlier one, that looked like a mushroom with a flat surface on top.
I'll be making heavy use of my 3D printer on my next paludarium build. Normally I use stuff I get from craft and hardware stores to make the scaffolding, backing, and waterfall pool for the tank. If I can figure out how to make it with the printer I can seriously cut down on fabrication work and get an end product that is sturdy and looks clean from other angles.

@@JurijsJutjajevs Won't be fast, but if I break it down into parts then I end up with tons of reusable designs.
A good example is I use acrylic boxes as upper pools for filter return and where my waterfall starts. Currently I have to work around the size of the boxes I can get, with my printer I can scale the pool to my needs instead.

Any chance you could do a detailed video on preventing algae. I have a 60L with some fish and do regular water changes but i can see algae developing daily. Would be super helpful!
I actually have 3d printed a safe guard for the eheim skim 350 myself. You can find templates for it online. Not this exact one, but a "netting" inlay for the original piece. In addition to that i have it on a smart power outlet where i can turn it off and on using my phone and customize intervals easily :)
if you can't get a 3d printed skim guard i highly recommend smart(or at least programmable) power outlets!

If you print these at home, it's worth noting that the main filament material in itself does not guarantee that the 3D printed object will be aquarium safe. There are chemicals infused in the filament that allow it to melt and dry fast for accurate printing which could be harmful to livestock. So always make sure the material you use to print your items is free of any of those volatile chemicals.
Hello I have recently lost my favorite beta who got their long stunning tail sucked in to the stem of my hang on filter. I have switched over to a sponge filter however I need a surface skimmer, but am worried about this issue. Would you say a beta would be in danger of this? I looked for a short fin plakat but they never sell at my local or large chain stores so they dont stock them. Don't want my new beta to meet the same fate.

just curious. why not use the glassware build in skimmer. why the choice of an extra(ugly) device in the tank? i see greenaqua doing the same thing, preferring the eheim skimmer over glasswork.
glass skim pipes take more place, the floater has a lot of issues, its sometimes a pain in the ass to adjust properly. it will bounce or syphon air ..
@@JurijsJutjajevs ah I see. I keep my glass skimmer fully open at the bottom and adjust the amount of air under the floater with a special tool I made until it skims to my liking.
I just cut a small piece of mosquito netting and roll it in to a cylinder shape and place it inside the edges of the skimmer.
Its good top for surface skimmer and safe for shrimp😍🦐🦐

Big improvement over the original but I think my Amanos would still climb in there.

I have an even cheaper option that I use on my eheim skimmer. Using a plastic container that the potted plants come in, if you cut out parts of it it fits perfectly on top of the skimmer and still allows it to float as it weighs nothing. I'd post pics of it but not sure how to on here. Unless I pm you on insta?

This ist the reason, why my scimmer works with a timer. Every our it is on for ten minutes, in the night IT IS off, because I have fish sleeping at the water surface and got suced in in the night.

Den Skimguard könnte ich sehr gut gebrauchen, aktuell habe ich ein Drahtgebastel, um die Schnecken zu schützen, doch das Ding setzt sich so immer zu und ist ziemlich unpraktisch. Danke für deine sehenswerten Videos & Kanal, @Jurijs Jutjajevs
Wären die Versandkosten von Liquid Nature in die Schweiz nicht so teuer, würde ich mir den Guard sofort bestellen :) Aber für einen 10€ Artikel 25 € Versand zu zahlen ist etwas viel. Falls ich nicht gewinne, hoffe ich also auf die Beruhigung der allgemeinen Weltlage, damit ein Besuch Wiens wieder realistisch wird - tolle Stadt, leckeres Essen und dann auch ein Besuch bei Liquid Nature wären doch schöne Aussichten.

I have never used one permenantly. Just at times when I can monitor the skimmer. For a time it was on a timer (1 HR on and 1 HR off) but the anxiety when you check after work wasn't worth it. One alive amano shrimp just doing fine luckily. But one other a time a dead pygmecory. Such an heartbreak. I only have it in short times when I constantly observing. Quite stressful.. My is @richardfinnman10
I mostly use only to get rid of trimmings or when surface film is an issue, and I try to remove after a while - sometimes it enough to keep it for few days and can be removed afterwards and surface film doesn't come back.. I dont like the plastic look of it
I still wouldnt feel safe with one of those unless I had some mesh covering the top. Seen too many of my shrimp climb up into my HOBs to trust an open top.
you can glue some mesh on top if you wanted, maybe LiquidNature read this and make a V2.0

kurzarbeit ahoy, würde sehr nice in mein betta/garnelen scaper tank 35l passen, da ich den skimmer nicht mehr im dauerbetrieb für die kahmhaut (welche immer wieder kommt) einsetzen kann. Die Garnelen verschwinden einfach immer darin :(

That is an amazing skimmer floater. Love the fin inlet and in black which is jus Fab. Well I had an issue with my Cobalt blue dwarf Gobi and my Yellow shrimp always perching themselves close to the floater and getting sucked in... so yea I hope I'm lucky to get one of these.

that is an awesome idea!! i used some stainless steel mesh to mod the weir on my intakes =) since it was flat it was easy... that round shape is super complex since it moves and floats super cool solution. I used a bunch of Lego bricks to build a desktop stand for a nano tank...
