I have not used them yet because I don’t really need them! But it is crazy to see the difference in your scape in only minutes! Looks so much better! Love that scape! See you at aquashella mate! Keep up the great content!
I use the All Pond Solutions Skim 2 on my 350 litre and it's on a timer to come on for 15 minutes before the lights come on and that's all it needs to keep the surface clear. My 110 litre Juwel uses the Juwel one and that works well too. I don't think you can go wrong with these things but I do like the protective bit on the OASE to stop shrimp getting in.
Great product review! I have used the Eheim surface skimmer for years, modified it a lil to keep it shrimp friendly and worked great. I now use the Seachem Tidal filter which has the built in surface skimmer and it works great! I have two Tidal 35s on my 29 gallon scape and the water and surface is crystal clear with plenty of circulation! A suggestion with the Oase would be if they had the outake valve as the Eheim but on the bottom like a floating eye so you can adjust it in any direction 180 degrees. Great to see you doing the shows a lot more! Awesome for the aquascaping community!
Food also makes a difference re oils/scum too. I use an All Pond Solutions skim2 on my Rio 180 and it runs all the time. I've also hacked it slightly to feed water to the top of my bio Co2 chamber that sits next to it for maximum exchange.
I’m so excited over this product!
I have used this skemmer All Pond Solutions Aquarium Surface Skimmer, its only a cheap one, but works really well..
Great skimmer, very happy with the Oase 600 for my 120 gallon tank. However, I agree with George that a black option (and the option to easily remove the Oase logo) would be great!
I have used independant skimmer units similar to the one shown here.
And I have used hang-on-back filters with built in skimming fitment.
The problem with all of them is shrimplets (and sometimes the smallest nano fish getting sucked in). This is usually fatal for the fish and inconvenient for me as I have to be careful when maintaining the filters - trying to rescue the shrimp...
Then the Aquario Neo Skimmer hit the market! Great product: keeps the surface just as clean without the hassles. The fundamental difference with the new Aquario design is that the skimmed surface water isn't sucked directly into the filter... it is sucked down and mixed with the water below the surface and blown into the water column. Then it circulates and gets pulled into the standard external filter intake... which I attached a filter foam block to so the shrimplets are safe (and this foam block acts as a handy pre-filter).
And better still - the design is so stupidly simple that I made two out of filter hose scraps and a modded bottle cap. These can be plugged over the standard filter outflow, and, hey presto, two aquario Skimmer copies... total cost £0.00 🙂
Hey a good project for someone to make one of your DIY skimmers on a video ?
I had an very inexpensive one a long time ago. It didn’t last long. On one tank I had stainless steel pipes with a plastic skimmer on the inlet. I’m not currently using a skimmer, but they are often handy when starting a new aquarium. I was looking for one of the 350s after the Aquarium Garden video, but couldn’t fine any in the US.
I use surface skimmers and have used the lily pipe inlet with the skimmer on top, the Eheim. The Oase Crystal Skim is my favorite, but... on my UNS 90L it creates a crater on the sand below. My solution, cut an acrylic sheet into a round circle slightly larger than the outlet and I get the water shoot out at a 360°. Now I don't get a jet like on the Eheim and don't get a crater on my sand below. on my 190 litter this is not a problem. the only thing that dives me crazy is if too much debris get sucked up it shoots bubble like crazy. Otherwise it is great and my shrimp and small fish dont get sucked in
I have the 350 which is a bit too powerful for the smaller aquariums even on the lower setting. An idea would be a smaller version below the 350 for Nano tanks even those aquariums need skimmed! The build of the Oase 350 is first class...I really like it! 👍☺
Love the shrimp safe design but I think the downward flow would be a problem for shallow tanks, like the tank I am currently in need of a shrimp safe skimmer for (90cm long, just under 12 inches height)
Always great content George
It’s crazy you made this video because about 2hours ago I ordered this skimmer for my scape!!
Years ago I bought Eheim Skim 350 and it still skimming my aquarium
Hey George Great VIdeo - House looks amazing. See you soon.
I have my surface skimmer on my light timer so if any shrimp, etc get caught in it they have a chance to get back out. Has worked good for me
I prefer spray tube over the side over a skimmer. Skimmer gets clogged pretty fast, takes space and doesn't work too well with floating plants or fish like guppies. I have 2 chinese copies of Eheim skimmer, but I don't know if I keep using it in any aquarium long-term for the issues listed. I always end up with an island of floating plants and leaf pieces.
Oase skimmer in the video seems better designed, so I may take a look.
I'm using the 350 version on my 200lt aquarium and loving it I have found it better to use with the cage removed
I've never used a surface skimmer. Been concerned about the safety of cherry shrimplets, livebearer fry, and nano fish. I changed the food I feed, though, and that seems to have resolved the surface scum issue. In fact, I only saw surface film on any of my tanks recently, and that's because I fed something different from normal. Thankfully, that cleared up in a day or two.
I looked up the smaller 350. I hope it can fit in my nano tank, it could use the help.
On your next vlog , could you also say why you prefer this to using ones on your filter inlet/outlet, as I remember you saying you don’t like to use the in built filter skimming , be interesting to know why. Look forward to your next upload
i've just replaced my two inlet skimmers by two Oase ones because it was just horrible. Catching air all the time, making noise. Hate it.
I use one which is part of my filter, I use a seachem tidal
I use Aquario Neo Flow Premium on 2 and Fzone Lilly pipe set with skimmer on other
Mat did a review on this a few months ago. I think it looks amazing. I want one. Not available in Australia yet as far as I know. Spewing
I use Aqua-Rio, and i like it very much.
i like that it protect any small fish or shrimp from entering the skimmer, but the flow exited from the bottom bothers me as - i do not want it to disturb my soil/substrate.
@georgefarmerstudious. What lights do you use? I also have hooded(canopy ) fishtank, and not sure which light can be used for planted aquarium?
I wouldn't exactly say the bba is embarrassing when there's not a definitive answer as to why we get it (at least from what my research has told me).. I also have bba on a lot of my wood albeit not as long as this here on the outlets. Great review, not sure if to go with this or an inlet attachment style when my fluval siena turns up next week
I bought a 600 for my 65 gallon. It constantly produced micro bubbles no matter what I did. I sent it back and got a replacement. The replacement did the same. That went back too.
i bought 2x Oase crystal skim 600 for a 90P and a 150P, it's a good skimmer but 2 things i don't really like : - one is rejecting air bubbles because i have some surface flow
- the fact that the outflow is underneath the skimmer. At full power, my plants don't seem to like it.
I use the juwel skimmer but only because I have the juwel tank the oase one looks very good 👍
I’ve reported it hope it was scam
I have a 6.5 gallon reef. Trying to find the absolute smallest possible surface skimmer to add to my tank. Any suggestions?
Looks like a great skimmer George, not sure of its availability in Australia though.
I'm als in Australia. So did you manage to find it in Australia or online. Thanks
I have a different cure for it: use the poppy type lily pipe that pushes the water to the surface. My surface water is cristal clean!
I use the ocean free skimmer that is very similar to the oase
love your thank
I use a Eheim skimmer. For my small tank.
I use the built in skimmer on the Aquario neo flow premium Lilly pipe. You can not fault it for getting rid of surface scum but it doesn’t ‘catch’ any debris as it’s attached to the outflow pipe
Yeah I ordered it without really looking at the product, and when it arrived I was I little bit disappointed, so I sent it back without even trying, I didn’t like the idea of the scum being sent right back into the water 😬
Where can you get it from and how much do they cost
I use Lily Pipe glass skimer and EHEIM 350
Beautiful aquarium! I don’t use any surface skimmers. I am very keen to understand why YOU have BBA! 😮. Actually, it’s quite reassuring for us mere mortals.
5th like! I actually don't use a surface skimmer currently. I only use a sponge filter
Waw je hebt een prachtige aquarium! ❤
Where do the oils go?
350 should be perfect for back center chamber of Fluval Flex 123 AIO where CO2 is injected and gets a heavy surface film. Should clear the film and push the CO2 back down towards pump.
Acrylic inlet surface skimmer attached to canister filter
All ponds solution. Been running for 3 years, 13 euro, simple and safe. I don’t see any major reason to change but the downwards flow seems decent if you need more flow
why does Oase create micro bubble. Isit normal
Nice move family!
where can I buy this in USA
Another bulky eyesore item! I'd build a column in the back corner with black plexiglass and conceal the skimmer within.
Спасибо за такой подробный обзор
A biofilm will absolutely reduce gaseous exchange at the surface. If injecting Co2 this becomes a problem for livestock.
Surface scum can also be of iron bacteria reducing which presents as flakey rather than the typical oily appearance.
Eheim still makes the best surface skimmer. I have had the same Eheim surface skimmer for 15years running non-stop.
Hi George, figured worth asking as you are an Oase ambassador, I live in Sydney Australia and we struggle to get aquascaping gear down here. Do you know of anyone who sells the skimmers and will ship internationally? I know I would need to have a plug adapter but I want to run these in two of my larger tanks but cannot find anyone to sell the, to me. Thanks mate.
Yeah sure I will send you my bank details immediately
I use a cheap Chinese skimmer ( LY-03 ). It is only used when required as it only takes about 10 minutes for a big tank . I don't see any reason to use one constantly .
What happened to your discus?
Can you tell us if it's a sponsored video?
I have a Tidal HoB filter, it has a built in skimmer that does a good job of keep the scum away.
Can it suck up Man U fans?
Hi George
Floating plants are your best bet against surface scum, floating plants = Springtails.
Springtails devour microscopic plant debris and provide live food for fish.
Skimmers kill Springtails, and small surface fish e.g. baby livebearers.
I think your tank has excessive surface agitation, that may cause scum, like waves on the beach producing white froth piles. Proteins and oxygen all churned together.
You agitate the surface I think because you put the CO2 on well before the lights.
Plants respire at night, if the surface was calm the CO2 would not be lost.
Skimmers and surface agitation I suspect play havoc with the natural bacterial fauna below and above the meniscus.
Patience from the aquarium keeper and a calm tank (gentle, slow, but big filters) with modest CO2 injection and good levels of micro nutrients will sort out most issues.
Have used a skimmer but only as a last resort to get rid of duckweed.
On an aside, the Marble Hatchets are great, one advantage of a covered tank.
I don't have any tanks larger than five gallons and yet I have surface scum too.
Although, it seems to be a seasonal issue rather than year-round.
If anyone has some suggestions, I'm open to hearing them. Currently I just use a paper towel but that's not very efficient and it wastes _a lot_ of paper towels in the process.
There has to be a better way.
Stay classy my friends.
1.) You can use a tiny mister bottle with dechlor/rodi water and spray the surface back into the column.
2.) Increase surface agitation, micro waves.
3.) Increase plant load with red root floaters. They thrive in that environment and mixed with all these I've never had problems
And I just was looking for a skimmer😄
I use a skimmer as an all in one skimmer and filter
Hi George this is awesome. How do i reply?
I need a surface skimmer that can move duckweed to one area. Nothing i've found so far work lol
Eheim worked for this purpose for me - but watch out for small fish.
Great idea, how much are they?
Just bought mine for 40 euro
I do like that OASE though!!
Already use OF Hydra Filtron 1800, already built in.
Glass inlet skimmer 💪💎✌️
You can remove it quickly with a sheet of cling film.
Hmm I’ll definitely order one on Amazon in the United States
👍👍
Hob has one
❤
im jealous
Best ever Eheim 350 micro skimmer 😎😉😎
😍💚(1st comment by the way 😁)
think I rather have some surface debris than that piece of mechanics
1:12 Man U fans building up at the top of the water. 1:26 to achieve no scum at all then either use an Oase CrystalSkim 600 or alternatively nuke Old Trafford.
My floating plants act as a great surface skimmer. I have no surface skum at any time.
Used the Eheim skimmer, but not any more. IT ATE MY SHRIMP. So please, for the love of fish, put a timer on the skimmer. This will turn it off for a period of time to let any trapped fish, fry or shrimp escape.
Fake telegram below, if that wasn't obvious enough
Hi, did your skimmer come with a shrimp guard? I'm not not sure when they added that. My eheim skimmer 350 came with a guard that you insert in the top. When i looked you can slso purchase guard seperately.
@@urbansk8r231 the guards are not available to buy in the United States for some reason, it's also hard to find a 17mm filter intake guard
@@zlk718Hi, I was surprised to see a guard come with mine. When i did research on youtube of people doing unboxing where there was no guard, but then i saw an eheim guard for it on ebay . I'm sure you can find one on amazon. So now i have 2. Amazon has only been here in Australia for about 4- 5yr so i haven't made acc yet.
Not a lot available in South Africa that man in the street aquarist can afford due to the poor exchange rate. I use a fluval surface skimmer attached to a canister. Will need to speak nicely to family in UK. IMHO there are all sorts of nasty bacteria hiding in that surface scum. Since using a skimmer I've had much better success with rainbowfish. Always used to struggle with some kind of infection in the mouth area.
No surface skimmer ever used here.
I wouldn't be without a skimmer. Great bit of kit but the all ponds isn't too pretty. I'll be all over the 350.
Say 'minimum' again for me lol!!
Too much waffle at the start 😂
Totally ruins the esthetics of the aqua scape. I manually skim the top layer off when making water changes when the layer builds up. A one time skim lasts a very long time. I’d save my money and “skim” on having a Skimmer and also eliminate the hassle of having that thing hanging down in the tank ruining the view.
It uses suction cups, so I will stay away from this product. If it used magnets like the Sicce Shark Pro, I would purchase it immediately.
quality of videos and aquascapes has gone down
Noted!
