Goliath grouper are considered critically endangered which is a direct result of overfishing. You aren’t even supposed to take them out of the water. As much as arresting someone for doing that seems like overdoing it, it’s still the rule, and it’s the fishermen’s job to know the rules of where they’re fishing. If you love and respect marine life, do not harm them by fishing. Fish feel pain when their skin and flesh are pierced by hooks, and often die of barotrauma or suffocation if kept out of water for more than just 60 seconds.

I’ve spoken with quite a few marine biologists who catch fish for research purposes daily and you can actually keep most fish out of the water for well over 5 minutes without causing any harm whatsoever. A fish being outside of the water isn’t the equivalent to a human being underwater if that’s what you’re thinking. Fish have a very high tolerance to being outside of the water for several several minutes. I encourage you to go fishing and see what it’s really like, I can guarantee you it will change your mind.
