  • Pismo clams are among the most sought after clams on the West Coast. These clams are large and delicious as table fare. In this video, you’ll see me hunt for these amazing mollusks!

    Awesome!
    Is there any signs on the surface to indicate a clam, or do you just randomly poke and prod for one?

    • @ryeginliving2664
      @ryeginliving2664  Před 2 lety +2

      I’ll scout around until I find one, then work that area. If you find one then more are usually around. I cover rectangular areas rather than poke around randomly.

    I just found this video...those clams are absolutely beautiful. If you do not mind my asking, when is the beginning/ending season for harvesting these clams; and how many are allowed to be harvested in a day? I've never been clamming but I would love to experience it. Looks like you and your wife had a wonderful time, and I hope the two of you had a delicious meal.

      Hi Valerie,
      Clamming season is fall to early spring, generally months that have an “r”. The limit is 10 clams per person.

      It’s a lot of fun 👍🏼. My pitchforks are very old and were passed down to me from my dad. You may be able to find one at garage sales in Pismo Beach. Otherwise, look for one that has thin tines. Good luck!

    Here in pismo looking now. I was inspired by your video and was so looking forward to finding a legal one. In the end i only found undersized clams. The locals here tell me that a legal clam hasnt been found here in 35 years. Can you point me in a better direction then where i was trying. Any help is greatly appreciated.

      Thanks. The forks were passed down to me from my late father. They're around 60 years old. I know a shop in Pismo Beach that sometimes finds clamming forks at garage sales then turns around and sells them.

    a tool like Metal Detector that able to detect clam under the sand
    maybe ultrasonic sensor that able to penetrate the sand

      I don't know of a way to find bigger ones. A shop owner I talked to in Pismo Beach told me he dives to deeper water to find larger clams.

      @@ryeginliving2664 If you ever visit maine, Pine Point allows everyone to dig, no license. The type I use for chowder and for bait are called surf clams aka hen clams. There’s a few beaches in Maine that let yo dig 3 bushels a day without a license, you just need to check for red tide or pollution closures. 3 bushels is the equivalent of five 5 gallon buckets. It’s so much fun! Do you fish?
