2019 / 2020 Cadillac XT4 | Taking On The X1

  • Cadillac's latest crossovers are all FWD based vehicles, that can be seen as an issue for the larger XT5 and XT6 as they go head-to-head with European RWD competitors, but the XT4 has no such natural competition. With everyone on equal footing the XT4 makes a compelling argument for going with the Cadillac over the Europeans thanks to generous legroom and a practical cargo area. The only major fly in the ointment? The price tag. The XT4 gets expensive if you get carried away with the options.

I do like the styling of the XT4, rear included. Pros: exterior styling and interior room. Cons: interior styling and refinement, price. My choice is a toss up between the UX 250h for its fuel efficiency and cheap price, the XC40 for its refinement and overall packaging, or the e-Pace for its uncommonness and sexy styling.

They aren't far off one another. The Sport model with the active dampers is a little more plus than without, and the Prem Lux with the 20" wheels is a little harsher than the base tire/wheel combo.

For driving enthusiasts that don't require AWD, the 800 Lb Gorilla in the room is the 2019 MB GLC 300.
With a starting MSRP of $40,700 you can move up a class, getting more room, a gorgeous interior, more power and a real RWDer. Here in FL about 30% of inventory is RWD (non 4Matic). I got into a 2018 last spring with Burmester and pano sun-roof for just over $46K. For an SUV it's fun to drive, as I can induce rotation with my right foot! 😀

Rotation is great. I live in Naples part-time soon to be full-time, I'm from Syracuse, NY snow capital of the NE.. Even if I never left Florida, I'd buy a 4matic.. RWD is fun and all but it's also nice to not be limited in rain, sand etc. Just my opinion. I have the same stance with RWD pick-ups. How do you like the car? fuel economy has to be impressive..

I searched everywhere. Even the dealer with his technical contacts at Cadillac could not answer the question on how the maximum speed that it would engage, etc. They finally guessed no higher than 25MPH. I believe Audi's works at over 50mph. Can you help answer these questions? Also what was the actual highway mpg you were able to achieve? Thanks

Thanks for the review Alex. I take delivery of my new XT4 sport on Monday. Mine is as well equipped as the tester you had, out the door I got it for $52,485. Quite in line price wise with the heavy hitters in this class. Overall I came away very pleased with the overall package, moreso than the others I sampled in the entry luxury crossover class. I don't understand this either. The ATS/CTS/CT6 could have been adapted to a crossover. The XT4/XT5/XT6 conversions were likely a little less expensive because CUVs had already been built off the basic building blocks, but I can't imagine it was really that different since the chassis is not *exactly* the same as the lesser cousins.

I have to admit that as a GTI owner I just don't "get" this category, either the mainstream or premium segments. My GTI has better driving dynamics, performance, and greater practicality than any of the vehicles in the sub-compact crossover category. And if AWD is a priority, the Golf R has equally compelling advantages.
I don't typically proclaim that "Anyone who pays X dollars for this vehicle is crazy." I figure people have different priorities and different budgets and it's their business how they spend their money. In this case, though, the idea of dropping $50K+ on a sub-compact crossover is just beyond me.
