    Thinking about souping deathwatch battalion with grey knight goodness. Deathwatch troops with storm sheilds, special issue ammo, and stalker bolt rifles are the same points as strike squads. Deathwatch can take whirlwind hyperios, and chaplain dreads along with a watch master for a nasty backline castle. Drop in draigo and some grand master nemesis dreadknights turn 2 and unload all my psychic powers, and gunfire, charge anything left.

    Deathwatch is my 1st and only army 😎
    I'm working slowly on it the last year and a half. Like the lore and fluff around them.
    My Deathwatch force has a radical ideology, they hunt for useful xenos tech and also forge secret alliances with Xenos races for the benefit of Mankind... They have a mobile Watch Fortress called Excalibur-Alpha. The have close ties with certain radical Inquisitors, Xenotech Mechanicus priests and trusted Tempestus forces...

    One thing to add is that, if your don't need a extra storm shield, a chainsword is zero points and give you a extra free attack. So, if you need just a extra cheap warm body, a Vet with bolter + Chainsword is the best pick. Other thing is that you can give your vanguard vet 2 plasma pistols, since you main objective with it is to be able to fall back and shoot, it have more synergy than a melee focused VV.

  • @GradeAMolvanian
    @GradeAMolvanian Před 4 lety +5

    Sternguard vs a default Deathwatch Vet: The Sternguard is a point cheaper, his gun is better (Range of Krak, AP of Vengeance), he gets Chapter tactics (Many of which are better than what the Mission Tactic the Deathwatch get because Lieutenants are so easy to field), and he can use Bolter Discipline which the Deathwatch can't unless he wants to give up his special ammo.
    A Storm Bolter helps, as the DW Vet CAN use special ammo through one. As does the special Frag Cannon. The short of it is if you want to get the most out of DW Vets, you want to be close, have a few melee weapons, and a lot of storm bolters, sprinkle with optional Frag Canons or Combi-meltas.
    Ultimately though? Debatable value, a very questionable "chapter tactic" equivalent, and a very lazy codex update that gives them no new unique anything at a time everyone else was getting it... They aren't bad, they have a niche, and can be played aggressively to that niche I'm sure they'll do well, but it's just a bit... disappointing. Like everyone else in the comments is saying.
    I've used Kill Teams before, and it looks like they haven't changed. Very limited for a pure army, costs you a lot to be splashed into other armies.

  • @hammer1349

    I rarely use that many weapons that can use special issue ammo, instead preferring melee weapons and specialist weapons. I have found that a mix of a couple of vets with storm shields and a pair of terminators with heavy weapons is a potent combo. The added durability to the squad allows them to stay in the fight longer while also still threatening targets now that the vets could also carry heavy weapons

      @@about99ninjas56 complete lack of tactical flexibility. You get ap -3 tops at 24" and you are still only strength 4, with only one damage each you're next to useless against armour. My version of that squad would be 3 with stalkers and storm shields and either 2 missile launchers or infernus heavy bolters. Increases their mission profile and maintains similar weapons range, also provides some deterrent for charging with the infernus or provides much needed ranged anti tank. If you want you can throw in a terminator with cyclone for good measure

    @elescapo Před 4 lety

    You didn't mention one of the benefits of mixed units: combat squads. If you take 5 veterans (say, with Stalker Bolters) plus 4 Bikers and a Vanguard Vet, you can combat squad them during deployment. This gives you a 5-man backfield unit (the veterans), and a fast-moving unit (the bikers and vanguard vet) that can fall back, shoot, and charge -- but most importantly, it still has the TROOPS battlefield role (because it's still technically a Deathwatch Veterans unit), so it has Objective Secured -- unlike a normal bikers squad. You can use this same trick with a full combat squad of Vanguard Vets, Terminators, etc.

    Also I like to run 1 Inferus Heavy Bolter to double up on the "on hit deal 1d3 mortal" strategems.
    I also think this is one of the few Units when Combat Squads become interesting. 3 Bikes & 2 Vanguard make T5 Fast Troops that can have 2 Stormshields, fallback charge & shoot. It's squishy compared to a whole killteam, but mobile.

    Secondly if terminator has one wound from previous attacks and squad gets shot again, will you now need to use the saves from terminator even if you would rather use storm shield 3+ up? I know you need to allocate the wound to already wounded model, but do i also need to use its save?
