    I've been maining DW since Kill Team released and really enjoyed your breakdown here. You can do a lot of really fun things with them. The only advice I'd give is going ahead and settling 100% on a melee Sergeant with a storm shield. Take whatever melee weapon you want, you typically dont need a power fist. Reason being, if you're charging into 7 wound models, their melee (generally) sucks. So you just open with a Stormshield parry, that takes care of their (likely) just two successes and then you burn em down with whatever weapon you think looks the coolest. If you're charging into models with more wounds than that, you're not 1-shotting anyway. Really like the xenophase blade here. For fluff but also because with 5 attacks on 2s, you're rarely missing so you have that initial parry with the stormshield to help keep you alive, and 3-4 hits leftover for the kill. Add on a krak grenade and you've got a genuine murder machine.
    I am really awaiting an FAQ/Balance update that lets me take a stormshield and plasma pistol on my fighter. It's just such a cool looking load out, I'm sad its not a legal build.

    Speaking to the hobby element, it's pretty EZ to use Primaris models for some of the loadouts - Bladeguard Vets can easily look like their wielding Stormshields / Plasma Pistols + Power Swords; Hellblasters = Plasma. Some of the Primaris chapter heroes look really cool too. Kayvaan Shrike if you really want a fighter with twin lightning claws. The biggest drawback is it makes drawing LoS a LOT easier for your opponent lol.

    • @tsquare2654
      @tsquare2654 Před 2 lety

      How? As long as you put them on 32mm bases drawing LOS works exactly the same as if you used regular DW Vets

  • @r_4_k-drone4321
    @r_4_k-drone4321 Před 2 lety +3

    Taking JUST 6 models of DW isn't a great idea.
    DW has loadouts for two ways of playing - either 3xplasma + Frag list or 3xstormbolter + IHBolter based on bolter-discipline (where you trade high plasma dmg for shooting twice - which COULD be better option against low HP horde teams). And sure, melee options are nice, but as we know, you don't want to trade in melee, not with Wounds DW models have, so it isn't actually that wise to always go with close combat loadouts..
    That means you SHOULD be using wider roster and pick your 6 guys to best deal with faction you are fighting against. And since you have 20 slots, you can go with list like this:
    3x DW Warrior [DW boltgun & power weapon]
    3x DW Warrior [Stormbolter & fists]
    1x DW Gunner [plasma]
    1x DW Gunner [melta]

    1x DW Heavy Gunner [frag cannon]
    1x DW Heavy Gunner [ihbolter]
    1x DW Fighter [stormshield & power weapon]
    1x DW Fighter [stormshield & power fist]
    1x DW Fighter [plasma pistol & power weapon]
    1x DW Fighter [inferno pistol & power weapon]

    1x DW Watch Sergeant [plasma pistol & xenophase blade]
    1x DW Watch Sergeant [storm shield & xenophase blade]
    1x DW Watch Sergeant [storm shield & power fist]
    1x DW Watch Sergeant [heavy thunder hammer]
    1x DW Watch Sergeant [plasma gun]
    1x DW Watch Sergeant [DW boltgun & power weapon]

    That allows you to deploy anything between plasma packed squad, full-bolter discipline friendly squad and all choices in between.
    Ofc, magnetizing your actual models (most important are Sergeant and Fighter) drastically decreases amount of work.
    ps. Transhuman ploy is for Primaris only, you don't need to mention it with DW ;)

    • @Crushanator1
      @Crushanator1 Před 2 lety

      It makes sense to use a full roster if you can afford to (or have the desire to do the extra work of magnetization) but imho it might be more useful to take 6 Primaris marines instead of a bunch of things you're unlikely to ever use.
      Taking your favorite (or best gap filler based on meta) pattern of Phobos marines so you're jamming up the board with Reivers, using the smoke grenade options, or ignoring cover boltguns seems like it'd be a much better use of your last six slots vs like Deathwatch with stormbolter etc

    • @r_4_k-drone4321
      @r_4_k-drone4321 Před 2 lety

      @@Crushanator1 thing is, DW allows you to mix and match with their options. Do you need powerfist and shield? Check. Do you need 2 plasma guns? Checks. Perhaps you want to field mix of power weapons and boltguns (aka nearly-grey-knights)? Check. Sure, they won't get smoke nade or helix gauntlet.. but in my opinion having numerous choices gives them advantage over any phobos compendium fireteam (and over standard tactical marines as well).
      As for ignore cover vs relentless.. you lost me a bit there. I mean, enemy won't have 1 guaranteed def dice vs re-roll any or all of your attack dice? That's not even a question.
      - incursor version (with no cover) will get you on average 0.64 crit and 2.01 normal hit, which translates to raw dmg of 8.60 (vs Df3, Sv4 average unsaved dmg is 4.36)
      - infiltrator version (with lethal5+) will get you on average 1.32 crit and 1.33 normal hit, raw dmg of 9.27 (vs the same profile unsaved dmg is 5.20, with cover bonus unsaved dmg 4.53)
      - stormbolter (thx to relentless) will get you average 0.88 crit and 2.68 hit, raw dmg 11.57 (unsaved dmg 6.85, with cover bonus unsaved dmg 5.70)
      and then, if you still wanted "no cover" option, then you can as well go with basic DW bolter that gets it on dragonfire rounds..

  • @VexedBadger
    @VexedBadger Před 2 lety +1

    I sort of agree with your conclusions, and sort of don't.
    My rule of thumb is that if the opponent has 8 wounds or less, I go bolter heavy. Doesn't matter if this is Guard or 'Quins. You just need 2 dice to go through with vengeance rounds (or a power sword for melee) and you get a kill. For this kind of opponent I will go bolter and sword on the sarg, and probably forgo the gunner and fighter for more warriors. Add in the IHB with suspensors and bolter discipline each round.
    For 9 or more I tend to follow your advice a bit closer. plasma gunner, plasma pistol on the sarg and fighter, frag canon on the heavy and keep CP for rerolls.

The idea is to maximize Bolter Discipline and hit as many targets as you can. A grenade gives you a 6" one use weapon, but it doesn't replace your weapon. The big benefit is that it gives you access to a weapon with the Indirect special rule. This allows you to count a target as having an engage order when you shoot them (so you can shoot them in cover on a conceal order) which is very powerful.
