That point about kasrkin teaching you break points is really great. Learning and understanding the likelihood of killing or injuring an opposing operative is crucial to getting better at the the game, and kasrkin teach that very well.

My friend and I jumped in with the Octarius set and it was a big learning curve with Guard and Kommandos. It took a few tough games with Guards before it finally clicked with how they should be played and finally won. Balancing positioning specialists, and being a horde team at the same time made learning skills and board rules a bit hectic. He played Intercessors for a few games and was able to pick them up and then look into the terrain based rules and more faster. Definitely agree on all of these if someone's new and isn't sure where to start.

I picked Vet Guard as my first team and have played them about every other week for about 6 months now. I still forget crucial things like In Death, Atonement for the demo vet to get another big kill from him after my opponent focuses him after he got a double kill. But they’re a super fun team though with so many options.

i think grey knights are a good starting point. decent wounds and saves. just a leader and 5 warriors. all have the same gun, give them all falchions and everything can reroll missed hits, which can help minimize feels bad rolls for a new player. psychic actions can be ignored and not really effect the way they play. simple equipment and ploy options too. all built from one box, plus very easy to paint

As a potential new player that has no terrain and I'm looking at the Starter Set to get going, maybe some guidance on what non-GW terrain to use to get the full experience without paying the GW tax. I want to play the game, but I only have so much money.
Really good list. After the Starter Set I was thinking Kasrkin and Scout Squad, but I was also thinking Pathfinders and Heirotek. Lots of options, that's for sure. Coming from Marvel Crisis Protocol though, KT has a ways to go before it has THAT many options. 😉

    Love the video.
I often pull out my strike force justice league (painted Justians as justice league)
Not only are they my coolest looking models where people click with them more as they are characters they have seen before but they are such a great team which covers a lot of core rules in the team.
You get a flavor of each of the special rules that other teams have
    Brutal
    Smoke grenade
    Blast
    No cover
    Heavy
    A model with only 2 ⚪ movement
    Plasma
    Ignore obscurity
    Invun saves
Lots of CP to play with for mistakes
    And a very forgiving team
So it covers a lot of core rules without having too many additional rules, plus no equipment means less brain load.

As a beginner, it's important to just enjoy the ride of things going wrong or not going to plan your first dozen or so games. Some hilarious things will happen (often at your own expense) that you were really not expecting or could not have anticipated. I have the same approach anytime I play against another team for the very first time. I say to myself "well this will be interesting!" but I will come away with a better understanding of not only that enemy team, but my team as well. If you're playing against a good opponent, they'll have no issue going over the mechanics of their team and their big "gotcha" moves to watch out for. If someone is just looking for an easy victory, they're probably not a good opponent to be having regular games with anyways. Enjoy the ride :)

When I was new to KT, I played and lost hard with: Kroot (pre-buff), Breachers, and Vet Guard. Keep in mind I assembled and painted each of these before playing them and it was kind of demoralising. But then I put together Kommandos and they instantly clicked and I was finally winning/close games/ties. So I highly recommend Kommandos for beginners too.

My personal wrong opinion good starter teams would be Blooded, Kommandos and Hand of the Archon.
All of which are reasonably strong with only one box and have mechanics letting you capitalize on typical beginner mis-plays.
HotA gets stronger playing KILLL team and blooded let you shoot into melee, when you overextended a model. Kommandos just let you survive an attack that would have deleted your model and let you sneak around and still give somebody a hard time.

I recently got into KT (been playing regular 40k) and I chose Gellerpox as my first team and I've played vs fairly mobile teams so far. Yes, I don't necessarily get killed. But if your enemy knows how to kite you while shooting off your vermin, you very quickly run out of chances to connect and have to try and sit objectives. I know my performance can be improved with better positioning, activation sequences and smarter use of tac/strat ploys, but I wouldn't call it easy.

I have loaned out my Kinband as a "here have some fun (and probably lose)" team. I think they are a good team to learn cover mechanics and they get rid of pesky things like traversal and jump tests that can bog a new player down with too much analysis of movement range. They are squishy and they don't have much reroll, but they tick the _fun_ box to get someone into the game. Totally viable one box team as well which is absolutely an important aspect.

They also have access to your default gunner options, and some standard staples like comms, melee guy, medic, etc. I think being a horde team is great too, since it means you have a lot of wiggle room to die and not have your game be over. 1 Intercessor death is a massive loss, 1 VG loss is nothing

I feel like the most important thing is to find your playstyle, cuz I started with Corsairs and I do not move enough, I hardly ever touch the middle of the board and play super heavy into long ranged attacks and they are not the team for that. I play Hearthkyn now and I've been playing a lot better because that team works well with my playstyle and I can actually use the tac ploys, I don't think I ever really got to use any corsair tac ploys cuz they're so situational.
also for anyone building a corsair team, my advice for what to make:
    - Gunner with Blaster cuz this team really lacks AP damage aside from leader and duellist.
    - Don't bother with kurnite hunter cuz it sucks so hard, just build another rifle warrior
    - Maybe on the soul weaver, extra APL is good but healing is a waste since they're elves they die in 2 hits anyways so you won't get any 1HP gangs that often.

I completely get what you mean and I posted a comment about it as well. Gellerpox were my first "active" team and I lost a ton of games. Playing them is extremely unique compared to other teams. Every model is there for a reason, losing the wrong one at the wrong time in the wrong spot can lose you the entire game, something you would not expect from such a horde like team. If your hulks die, your mutants and glitchlings can't do objectives. If your glitchlings / mutants die, you have a bunch of killy hulks that will barely do shit point wise and vermin can play a key part in taking other units down. They are extremely, extremely far from being beginner friendly imo. I nearly spat out my drink when they said that gellerpox are were forgiving mechanics wise. Kroot, Vets, Blooded, those teams are forgiving. Gellerpox? I have yet to lose with a team that is not gellerpox because I lost a single model at the wrong time because of a single misplay.
but after playing a ton of other teams I've returned to my beloved gellerpox and I do like them a lot now. Just takes a ton of time to actually be efficient with them.

  • @slemph2214
    @slemph2214 Před 4 měsíci

Gellerpox Infected being a really forgiving team gameplay wise is a hell of a hot take. Unlike Vets or Farstalkers, you NEED certain operatives in certain spots to win the game. Even losing a glitchling in a certain spot can lose you the game because your vermin can't do shit and your hulks basically only exist to kill stuff. If you lose a hulk early because you did not see that angle the enemy had on you there is nothing to protect the glitchling. Gellerpox are a gigantic noob trap imo. They were the first team I've actively played and I'd rather field my sisters or t'au to turn off my brain.
To add, I'd never suggest gellerpox to a beginner for another reason: You barely learn the game. You learn how to pilot gellerpox, which is a completely different thing to most other teams. You don't really learn about shooting, LoS rules (which are the most complicated for beginners) and stuff like vantage points. I mean even the equipment thing - yea, it's nice to not actively think "did I give this farstalker meat? does he still have it?", but again, the player is not learning about that mechanic. I'd rather suggest a team that has a little bit of everything. Because switching from gellerpox to any other team feels like switching to a completely different game and you have to learn so many new things (and unlearn other things too - suddenly your guys don't win 99% of 1v1s)

How could you not mention Grey Knights? Give them all falchions, suddenly they reroll all melee and ranged for free. 6 space marine bodies with all the benefits. Can use gear to make 1 way more tanky or killy. And psy powers that add a bunch if utility (also great tac ops/ploys).
I can't tgink of anything easier bseises custodes (which i don't recommend for new players as they dont give a proper representation of the gameplay for most other teams).

That was great. What about the Phobos Marines as a starter? I would also appreciate if you made some tutorial videos on how to improve at Kill Team.

phobos are arguably one of the most technical teams in the game imo, so no not beginner friendly imo

I wouldn’t recommend an elite team for new players because you will lose ur first games for sure in my opinion. I would recommend Kommandos for new players. They are very strong and you have a good chance of winning against inexperienced player’s even if u don’t use all mechanics they offer

Off work late? Too tired to listbuild but want to play kill team? Try twenty Ork Boyz. Twenty Ork Boyz back to back.
No Burnaz, no Nobz, just Boyz. Stikkbombz too.
You will certainly not regret running twenty Ork Boyz.

It's really hard to talk about this game in terms of what's "newbie-friendly" or "starter" or "easy" without going into gatekeeping territory. Someone will get interested because they see Necrons, then another player will be like, "Oh that team is THE WORST TEAM for new players." Like, what the hell? Is this person a baby? Do they only get to play with stupid baby toys for babies? It feels bad! People are showing up to the party and having the door slammed in their faces.
But here, I think you guys did a great job holding the door open, framing the topic appropriately, talking in general about the nuances of the game, and pointing out some of the stuff new players tend to stub their toes on. The next time I see an interested new player ask for some recommendations, I'm linking this video.

Totally wrong. Kommandos is the best beginner team. Each one is a specialist and it's obvious what his role is. Also, the fluff for orcs is best to get over losing models after playing badly and aggressiveness is rewarded. I am sipping a martini listening to how wrong you are. Cheers!

I’m a newbie who tried a whole bunch of armies one after the other and I settled on Kommandos even though I’m an Elf guy because of all the reasons you stated.

you put Gellerpox Infected on a "best anything" tier list. You have intrinsically failed the new folks and hurt the game and fandom.
