- Ningen Isu has been a band for as long as I have been alive, and I've just now heard about them. Great old school tone!

Only Japan could give the world both Baby Metal and Grandpa Metal.
Gotta cover those demographics... XD
🤣
Look at the old rockers of the west. Grandpa Metal has been here for… ten to twenty years. For example, Steve Harris (Iron Maiden, in case s.o. doesn't know the name :D) is almost ten years older then Wajima Shinji (the guitarist of Ningen Isu, and the oldest of the three).
Funny thing, they actually played in London the same weekend! XD Sucked cos I couldnt afford to go to both.
But we 🇯🇵 don't have pet metal such as hatebeak, caninus like you 🇺🇸 do
Some trivia I know about this band: the drummer is dressed as a yakuza member, the singer/guitarist is dressed as a literature teacher, and the bassist is a Buddhist monk who guards graveyards. In Asian cultures, white is the color of death and sorrow rather than black, that's why his face is painted in white.
The name "Ningen Isu" means "Human Chair" which is very famous classical Japanese novel. I didn't read it but I read Junji Itou's manga adaptation of it. Basically, a guy is in love with a woman who writes novels, so he lives inside her favorite chair to stalk her and watch every detail of her life. He sends her letters about how he enjoys watching her as well. He kills her husband later, and she, out of desperation, confusion, and loneliness, starts living with him inside that chair and they have a kid together who later grows up and tries to sell the chair to a pretty girl so she'd marry him and live with him inside that chair just like how his parents did. Why did they pick this name? I don't know tbh.
> white is the color of death and sorrow rather than black
Also why LoveBites always dress in white...
@@Mu77ley I read an interview and the singer said that they choose white because they are all tiny and nobody could saw them at the stage when they tried wearing black.
@@Mu77ley they also said in an interview it was to break the "black clothing" culture in metal saying that metal music is universal just like any other genre. Also to make them shine literally in dark concerts.
More specifically it's a Meiji era scholar the singer/guitarist is depicted as. It's as if the three members of the band are people displaced from three different eras; an undead Buddhist monk (from the feudal era I assume), a Meiji era scholar, and an 80's era Yakuza. It makes sense given a lot of their discography also references Lovecraftian cosmic horror.
Holy shit, they changed the novel a lot. In the original the women receives a letter with the story of a chair maker who is living inside a couch (his masterpiece) in a hotel, he listen to people, make them comfortable....and robs them at night. After a while the hotel decided to throw out the couch (with the man inside) and sell it. The couch goes to a woman who loves and writes novels, the man describes everything...the woman, her husband, how she lives etc....the woman is scared af but recives another letter from the same man who mentioned that the first letter was just a manuscript for a new book of his, the human chair.
These cats know how to ROCK and glad after decades they are getting their time to shine. Totally love their sound and riffage they throw out there.
yes.. and shame for me that this video brought me to them as somebody was making jokes on them like japanese granddads playing rock... but they have some good songs
@@josefpopovsky4535 I'm about the same age as these guys and i'm sure they heard it all before too - best part with age is wisdom - we just laugh right along with them!
@@josefpopovsky4535 To those laughing at these guys' age, have them check out how old the classic rockers (who are still playing) are.
@
I thought exactly the same thing .. 👍
Fun Fact: Ningen Isu's guitarist, Shinji Wajima, once having a guitar duel with Kanami Tono from Band-Maid for an educational TV program (to show the kids how sound was created through vibration etc).
That battle was cool.
I don't suppose you have a link to that, do you?
It's a pity so few bands make the bass this prominent in the mix. Well done.
You're right. Suzuki on bass plays only with a pick because the guy he doesn't like is good at slap play. LOL. By the way, you've heard the King Crimson cover
do you have? In my personal opinion, the human chair is cooler when comparing both.

czcams.com/video/MM_G0IRLEx4/video.html
Also they've got the balls to put two solos in one song and that's awesome.
I LOVE the double-tracked solo at the end. It makes the song for me.
dude I think they've done 3 before this. I am listening to their entire discography and they're great!
Find the lyrics in English. Pretty deep song.
or just turn the subtitles on....
Yes, they are powerfully evocative lyrics!
@@robertrijkers4923 the subtitles in their video are inaccurately translated though
If you're really interested in a good live track from these fellas I highly recommend Ningen Isu Namahage (Live) mate.. It's fantastic and a much more high energy song. Colour Out of Space is also really strong.
Absolutely. Namahage is one of my favorites. Color Out of Space is good too. I personally like The Caterpillar too, but it's different from their other songs.
I need more grandpa metal in my life. Discovered them on one of reactors' channels months ago but haven't been going through their entire discography yet. I like that King Crimson were one of their influences because I'm such a big fan of 'em.
Nice honest reaction. These guys are really huge fans of Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi being another noted SG user), and play a largely classic style 70s, early 80s, of Heavy Metal. While I dig the sound and actually am glad to hear some bands still doing it vs the "newer" styles, I can respect it's not everyone's preference. Nothing gimmicky to em.
Aside from a live of this, maybe give "Namahage" or "Colours out of Space" a shot. Colours is a bit proggy, IMO, and might be my favorite Nigen track.
Cheers man!
Somewhere out in the ether of youtube there's a video of the guitarist of Ningen Isu is having a guitar battle with Kanami from Band-Maid to teach kids about the power of sound waves by having them try and knock a little cardboard cut out of each other around with a speaker and their guitar shredding. I'd link it but it gets uploaded and then taken down daily. Good luck finding it. It's a cute video.
Here it is. Old Mr B did two reactions to it. It's a funny video!

It's like a whole series, when we were in Japan earlier this year we were able to catch an episode and they had a bunch of musicians (guitarists and bassists) from a variety of bands battling each other. Wajima was battling Rei and Rei is a pretty great guitarist herself, there's a live version of her song "Black Banana" out there that's just epic uploaded by DAX Space Shower, totally worth checking her out.
My favourite comment in their video (from user Alembic
):
CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER:
- Mystical Samurai Guitarist
- Demonic Monk Bassist
- Time-Travelling Rockabilly Drummer
=)
Hahahaha
Totally accurate too! XD
Used Car Salesman drummer
Listened to a lot of their songs the last 6 months. They just rock. Love these guys.
Always get a chuckle that this is one of the songs that got them noticed based on the lyrics. Great King Of Terror is one of my favorites
These guys popped up in my recommended music feed on youtube about a year ago, I've absolutely loved their newer albums. They now sit proudly in my cd collection next to The Ocean. The energy and variety you get from them is great, I definitely recommend sitting down and listening to some more stuff. I discovered them along with Hanggai and their song The Rising Sun, something to check out in the future too maybe.
The only bad part about having listened to so much of their music for years to this point is that I can't listen to them again for the first time.
talk about getting goose bumps through out the whole song. Just awesome!! The Bassist was something else, such a character
YEEEEEESSSS!! Ningen Isuuuuuuuuu!! Woohoooooo!! Love these guys. They rock, they're great story tellers with geeky subjects and they look like they came straight out of a manga. What's not to love! (this vid has English subtitles if you wanna know what they're singing)
if i heard it right they sing in a japanese dialect that even the other japanese people have a hard time understanding.
It's not as much a dialect as such they sing in, its more Classical Japanese. Their lyrics use the language from the Edo era and even quote directly from literature, which indeed most modern Japanese would have difficulty with. It would be like listening to Middle English for us.
I'm so glad you did this one I love it, you can tell they are all about tone, next one "Namahage (Live)" so good.
Dude, Chase would LOVE this.
Man I love the trivia type content of your reaction videos. Makes me feel like I’m back as a kid reading those illustrated encyclopaedias with colourful pictures and interesting Fact boxes everywhere. Very informative and entertaining. I’m sure it takes extra time and effort to do all that but its definitely appreciated. Thank you and keep the great stuff coming.
I wasn't wild about them at first either, but they grew on me. Great reaction as always.
Same here. Ningen Isu are like drinking coffee the first time. U need to do it multiple times to get catched. Another (pop music) song from japan for me with this effect was oddloop from frederic. XD
finally, bets were made when this would show up \m/ and yew there is a live version from their last tour from London I think
Great reaction. Found these guys when traveling down a CZcams rabbit hole. Got that chorus stuck in my head...it as very catchy. Great classic metal sound and very solid. Their image also appealed to me. Great reaction
I really like the bassist, cool dude, great playing and awesome attitude
Thank You for this reaction. It's classic instrumentation, classic sound and classic rock for me. I hope I get old in that good way like this three gentlemans.
Hope you check out more of their stuff at some point. I really like this band.
Was really stoked when I saw you were reacting to this!!
This track is so awesome...it does also come with translation... and they
just released a streamed session yesterday or the day before and they
sound exactly like this!
I was blown away, having lived in Japan for a few years back in the 60s/70s,
by the incongruity of their sound and look.
Great fun!!
Thanks for your reaction!
They published a live video on their youtube channel a few days ago with heartlesss scat as the first song. The lyrics are important to get the real tone of this song, I think the english subs are available in the music video.
Great review and reaction dude. I bought the album last year and I like it. These guys are something special in the rock/metal world. Well done for giving them a go. Cheers.
Turn on CC for the subtitles! The lyrics are sweet :D
This is one of my fav videos you hade done. I learned a really cool band and made open my eyes to completely new metal scenes. I understand that this might not pull a millions eye to it but still really fucking cool video. Thanks Tank
Ningen Isu is one of those slowly crowing bands. First you're like whatta.... And then suddenly you're sold!
Fun fact...the guitarist builds his own effects pedals....Totally agree about the vintage sound....I am not a fan of contemporary high gain guitar, and drums that sound like tupperware....I'm a drummer so I care about that stuff...
There's actually a video, about Shinji Wajima's DIY pedal board
czcams.com/video/CVYORMwCzMs/video.html
I'm no musician and I have no clue, but still found it very interesting :)
He starts demonstrating the effectors from around 19:00...
I had the pleasure of seeing them live in London back in February. No support, they came on and played for 2 and half hours in a venue with around 400 in the audience. I've never been to a show where I felt like I was witnessing something very special. Brilliant band. Definitely check out namahage live.
they've been streaming some release or anniversary concerts at least twice the last year alone. so subscribing them will help them as well as doing it here ^^
I caught a glimpse of the badge Tank, our man is rocking Pearls. 🥁🤘🏽
First video I watched from you, great channel.

HEARTLESS SCAT - NINGEN ISU Band
If you, Holy Angels, do exist in this universe
Will you bless me on the cheeks?
With my painful effort never paid off
I've just been standing in the shadow
Will the day come someday when I can fly high in the sky?
Will the day come when I can see the Sun?
Tell me, Holy Angels
Shabadabadia
Shabadabadia
Babababa
Shabadabadia
Shabadabadia
Babababa
If you, Divine Goddess, are staying hidden somewhere
Why don't you smile at me on my forehead?
I've never tasted the nectar of victory
I’ve never succeeded in love
Will the day come when I can get intoxicated by the victory?
Will the day come when I can embrace love?
Tell me, Divine Goddess
Shabadabadia
Shabadabadia
Babababa
Shabadabadia
Shabadabadia
Babababa
Countless stars are twinkling in the sky
Every one of us is under them
With a thousand wishes in each heart
Lululu Lululu
If you, Lord Buddha, really exist in some place
Please have mercy on me, too
Having nothing precious in my possession
Desolated
Isolated
I've been living my life with a series of failures
Will the day come when I can totally be satisfied?
Will the day come when my dreams come true?
Tell me, Lord Buddha

Shine a light on my life
Shine a light on my future
Shine a light on every creature
Shine a light on tomorrow for all.
Love this song, it's the kind of music that hits you right in the chest.
nice deep slightly distorted bass tone! and the guitar sounds killer \m/ The music gives me a real "oh hell yeah" feeling!
Like a lot of us who have been bands prior to the "internet", it is just now that we have a platform to be noticed by the whole world! These guys are outrageous...love them!
This is the first reaction video of yours I've seen. The little knowledge nuggets you drop throughout are awesome. Subscribed!
Thank you!
13:13 I don't know about drum models as you probably do but it's definitely a Pearl, I was unoccupied enough to watch the original video at 0.25 speed and I noticed at 1:20 a golden squared Pearl label on the toms and the Pearl logo on the tom stand at 1:44; after some Google research I found it's a Pearl Masters Custom. That's all I got :D I liked your approach to the song giving us some good facts. Good content!
The drums are Pearl brand. At the beginning of the video, at 30 seconds you can see the plates with the name Pearl on the drum.
Tank watch it again with English subtitles for a better experience if you do rewatch it.
they usually have english subs on their newer videos, so if you do them again don't forget to click them on
I first found out about these guys a couple of months ago. They are brilliant!
These guys are all my age; in fact, my birthday is almost exactly halfway between the guitarist's and bassist's birthdays :D
My favorite song from them is "Voice of Nothing". It's got a great groove to it, and the guitarist uses a rather wacky-looking SG variant that I can't identify. It may just be a modified SG.
Anyway, I guess they made an appearance at a European metal festival and did a small tour over there. They were supposed to appear at the SxSW festival this last summer, but that was unfortunately canceled due to COVID.
I read that a lot of their songs are based on ancient Japanese literature, and some songs are even sung in an ancient dialect that even most modern Japanese can't understand.
Yeah, you finally did it 🤘🏻
Thanks for reacting, one of the recommendations was mine. At the first time I listened to this song with open mouth, because every band member looks strange to me in a positive way.
I absolutely love the groovy guitar riffs.
Funny fact: during my first lis2I have to think about you and your dad, maybe he likes this stuff a bit more ;)
The japanese language sounds also cool to me, I love foreign languages. Actually I start learning russian and maybe I should learn japanese too :D
Thank you for reacting this, I really appreciate it. 🙏🏻
Personally, I describe their music as something I would not actively listen to, but I could have it playing in the background forever.
Was hoping you'd get to these guys at some point. Looking forward to this.
Love these guys!
Dat bass tone.
How did they get noticed now after 30 years? Babymetal. Babymetal brought the eyes of the world to the Japanese metal scene... and these guys were just too good to not take notice. That... and this is evidence of the impact of reactors. I was among those who were privy to the very first reaction video for this band, coming from a reactor who had started looking at other Japanese bands because of Babymetal, and it just started moving from reactor to reactor.
Ningen Isu, Babymetal, Lovebites, Unlucky Morpheus, Maximum The Hormone, Dir En Grey, Band-Maid, X Japan.
Japanese Metal music is my new set of metal playlist. They put American modern metal music to shame.
If you don't mind digging our metal, Try Satori Part 1 by Flower Travellin' Band, inspired by this song SLAYER made 2 masterpieces - Raining Blood and South Of Heaven.
Somewhere out there is a video of the guitarist sitting in a tent in the middle of the woods writing their songs in an old text book and eating ramen on a little gas stove 😎
Oh man, I forgot about these guys ! Thanks for the kickass reminder !
As you noted, the band is known in Japan but not so much internationally. Their goal was (and still is) to take the American style Rock and infuse it with Japanese style. The Japan Times (Newspaper) has an article on the band from 2015 titled "Perseverance wins Ningen Isu an encore" and it is well worth a read. They are a study in pure perseverance.
This is something I need to add to my streams as, I love the general riff and groove, though I doubt I'd do a full listen through to an album, but songs inserted into a variety would be most excellent.
The video contains English translation for the lyrics. Turn on subtitles in your player and watch again. The effect of the song will be twice as powerful.
ok so Mr. Miagi, Elvis and uncle Fester meet in a bar....get ded drunk and make a music video in the corono caused empty outside area. Awesome band. and man are they around for a while they are older than me XD
Ah, I see you too are a man of culture!
Yes there is a good live version in London (i think).
If the angel here in this world,
Plese give a bless to my cheak too.
To The one who shouldered painful burden that unrequited,
And standing in the shadow place,
This me.
Someday will come that I fly to the sky higher ?
Someday will come that I catch the success ?
Angel, Plese!
If the goddess here and hidding in somewhere,
Please give a smile to my forehead too.
To The one who don't know the taste of the wine of winner,
And broken heart ever,
This me.
Someday will come that I drink tasty wine ?
Someday will come that my love is come true ?
Goddess, Please!
ShavaDavaDida...

So many people under the stars,
Holding and dreaming 1000 hopes.

If Budda sitting there on somewhere,
Please show mercy to me too.
To The one who nothing anything to useful,
Poor and lonely,
And failling always,
This me.
Someday will come that I get fulfillment ?
Someday will come that my dream come true ?

These guys are amazing.
They where touring in Europe before the pandemy announcment in March
Ningen Isu have a couple live versions on their channel.
I was blown away by this band. However I understand what you are saying about not being totally hooked...yet. I shared this with a couple friends and they had the same reaction. They definitely liked it but they didn't order a tshirt and buy an album like I did. I spazed.🤘
Love that you choose this! I had a Japanese metal phase at some point 😅 specifically Visual Kei. Anyways, one of my favorite bands of that time were Dir en Grey. I've lost track of them in recent years but "Yokan" and "Cage" from their 1999 "Gauze" album were my favorites back then. Maybe check them out in your own time 😉
Ningen Isu's discography doesn't have one dud.
Love this band, one of my absolute favorites.
YOO I just found this band through a recommendation from my uncle this morning, and I am really enjoying them. Crazy you put out a reaction video to them today. Keep up the fun vids.
You know what would also be crazy? If you reacted to Æther Realm. Any song they got a vid for, but if you want a 19 minute epic that's such a good song I have a tattoo about it, try The Sun, The Moon, The Stars.
Bassist doesn't use the BC rich eagle anymore.. he took it out of storage to use it for show in the music video since the guitar is broken beyond use a long time ago
Definitely watch their live performances and put the captions on. Their lyrical content is stellar
I first seen these guys about a year ago. They have a cool grove and remind me of old school Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath also played a SG.
Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath was the iconic user of the SG that launched its popularity.
That Bass 😁♥️
Nice reaction❤️
I need more eluveitie reaction!!
Excellent rabbit hole to chase.
Yas!! Ningen Isu 😄 makes me happy to see them here.
The lyrics man, the lyrics!
The bass player has perfected dat stank face.
Yes!
This is an ear worm track, I woke up one morning not long after seeing the vid for the first time with the whole track just playing through, especially that end part.
It gets to you, you'll be doing something and realise you're humming it. 🤣
As an aside my best mate has an SG cos it's punk as. ...... 😁
Shabbedabbedeeyoooo! lol. First time I watched/heard it I thought it was funny and kinda cool. Second time listening I was like WOOHOOOOO shabbedabbedeeeyoooo! I actually had the same with Nightwish's new album. First time was yeah ok cool... Second listen: In love!
@@black4pienus I have that with almost every new album from bands where I'm already utterly invested in what's gone before. I've been that way since the 90s 🤣
After a couple of listens though it nor.ally becomes my new favourite thing! Haha
@@JeffWheezingGrampusGoddard Yep. It's usually the better music. Not the standard mainstream formula that's catchy, but ehm how do I say this... artistically or creatively cheap.
@9:25 Ningen Isu should have used a Sekova just rub some salt lol. Cheers fam, I love this band!!!!
Yes.... that's an Eagle....
The second solo, it makes me smile when I hear it. Peaceful energy under pressure.
Yeah! You found Ningen Isu! Next you could try The Colour out of Space, Great King of Terror or Voice of Nothing
@ Tank What a cool sound! (I hear bit's of Black Sabbath & Pantera).
The tone & overall sound of their guitars is so Good, the heavy bass is amazing too.
Awesome reaction/analysis Tank, thank you.
The Bass Player is the lovechild of Brian Glover and Buster Bloodvessel - true fact that :O
Yesss, finally!
Someone sent me the video for this song. I watched it once and was blown away. I found a couple of their other songs to be sure, then imported the most recent 5 of their albums. I personally find modern "metal" by and large unlistenable. This style is what heavy metal is to me. The sorts of things that classify in that genre of the past 20 years should really be called something else in my estimation.
The bass is a broken prop that is used just for videos if I remember an interview I saw translated. I don't recall what he said he actually plays live.
It's worth to subscribe to Ningen Isu YT channel. They put live concerts occasionally. Those performances stay on the channel for a week or two and then are removed. In fact, there is one from last Friday.
BTW, Tank, since you've already are familiar with The HU. The cover of Metallica's Sad But True is out. In Mongolian ;)
Good to know, thank you!
love Valhalla - Blind Guardian blasting as background music at the end
Can we talk about how the main riff sounds like "Years of Decay" Overkill worship?
You have to listen to Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura. Discover you channel not long ago but actually loving it! Greetings from Argentina
i came across a live video on youtube that was from the 90's, about an hour and a half, bass player had hair to his waist covering his face. classic rock fans they just seem to be getting known out of japan recently. might be due to the other really good bands from japan.
30 years they have a bunch of albums they're real popular in Japan
Just a hard working band that was unfortunately stuck in the underground for decades. They live in a really rural region of Japan which doesn't have a big music scene and is far away from Japan's main musical hubs of Tokyo and Osaka. Shinji Wajima and Kenichi Suzuki worked at their local post office until only a few years ago, making just enough to keep their musical career/hobby going. In the early 2010s they started to get shared around online quite a bit and it finally helped to boost their career to the heights they honestly deserved way earlier. They're shockingly consistent and haven't made a bad album despite a pretty long run.
Another great Japanese band and video to react: Wagakki Band - Homura/Akatsuki no Ito
