The "Scat" is referred to as in Jazz, where the singer/vocal just sings using no words, for the part in "Shabadabadia, shabadabadia"
The heartless part comes from the lyrics itself, where a man is pledging help from the heavens as he has no luck in anything in life.
On point
👍
Scat is a Jazz term. This band has been around for 30+ years and have at least 20 albums.
You guys missed the point of the long guitar intro entirely. Of course it's repetitive and drawn out. Think about it.
This song is about the endless toil of life never being rewarded. You do the same thing over and over and over again and the reward never comes. You never get the sake. You never find what you're after.
Thus, the melody at the start is repeated many times. It's the hard work being put in.
Once the lyrics come in, the despair has already set in. When will come the day that my work pays off?
The song eventually leads us down to more flourishes and flashiness, culminating at the end with the wisdom that one's own success and fulfillment isn't what's important. Everyone is in the same boat. It's better to wish for the good of everyone than for the self.
And turn in your metal card if an eight minute song is a turnoff. This ain't Radio Hits time, gentlemen.
That's deep. This is true art then and very relatable. I'll admit, you're far better at this than I am. Thank you for the insight and perspective!
@@sportosp-0158 You're too kind :-)
This.
Thats Deep but so True, Beautiful Explanation🤘🏻.
They're from Japan, been at it for like 30 years. Only recently have they gotten more attention from people reacting to this video, and they just played their first gigs outside of Japan in Europe.
Scat is the shabadabadia part, think I heard somewhere that heartless isn't the perfect translation, but I don't remember.
Namahage is their other most popular song and it's great, but I really love Odoru Issunboushi, there's a great live version of it on youtube. React to those next.
CZcams's algorithm suggested this to me a million times and I thought I was being trolled too, because of "scat". Finally caved in after being bored one day, and my mind was blown away by how awesome these guys are. One of the rare times that CZcams's algorithm suggested something cool.
They don't always get it right here on YT but, when they do, it's epic!
Same, but I put it on my "watch later" list and never actually heard it until now
Same here 😎
al-Mighty al-Khwarizmi taught me a lesson in 2017, so now I'm obedient to it. (AURORA!)
Guess you guys have got 22 albums worth of gloriousness to catch up on \m/
Yes, they're Japanese. They just toured out of Japan for the first time this month! Largely due to that video being promoted by yt and everyone loving it. They uploaded a live video of this song in Camden, London (from Feb 21st) earlier today. They're playing Austin Texas on March 18th
Maybe Namahage or The Colour Out of Space next :)
It was quite a sight looking at the comment section of that vid. Most we're like "why did YT show me this video?" and then loving it after listening to the song. LOL
Thanks for the info! I live in Austin!
I’m glad you guys discovered the secret! The Japanese title is actually “Expressionless Scat” or “Scat without Feeling”. It’s ironic because the lyrics, as you noted, are very spiritual and emotion-filled. It’s the plea of a man who felt his life has never met with success or great fortune yet partway through he realizes that there must be thousands of people who feel like him and in the end he wishes for blessings on everyone.
You guys judged way too soon, these dudes are fucking sick.
Please listen to "Namahage"in their songs. They use the "Tsugaru Shamisen" playing method in guitar play.
"Tsugaru" is located in Aomori Prefecture where they were born and raised.
The issue with translating Japanese songs into English, is Japanese bands have a very high penchant of singing entirely in metaphors that can and usually do get lost in translation so it's impossible to know what the song actually means just reading the words without knowing the actual meaning behind them. Ningen Isu in particular as they draw heavy inspiration from classic Japanese literature. I mean, Ningen Isu (Human Chair in English) itself is a reference to a short story of the same name written in 1925. So they're all about metaphors and double meanings that make perfect sense in Japanese....but not so much in English.
Why didn't I see this three weeks ago?
Scat was more jazz to me than feces, so when this video showed up in my recommendations I was more intrigued by old Japanese men who did not hide their age (when most Japanese bands do) still in a band. But damn, the first time I heard it I knew it was special.
I didn't play it with subs, but there was something that tugs at the soul, so when I watched it with the lyrics it became clear that it was a real prayer.
Powerful song. The gods granted their wish.
Atention span of these guys.... :D
They are an awesome band. Please react more to them!
It’s a band that is not famous in Japan
Unfortunately, even if I ask 10,000 people, only one person knows it.
I'm glad that people from overseas listen to it even if many Japanese don't know…
NI N GE N I SU is a heretic, unlike other Japanese musicians.
Most of Japanese songs are love songs.
However, this band deals with serious and important issues that other bands do not, such as the view of life, religion, morality, and life and death.
Man, you guys need to send them an apology letter after all the slagging you did on one of your previous videos! :D
You should really do namahage next. It's my first time to hear these old Japanese band. They definitely don't sound old.
At last!!! Thank you for reacting to this!! Now you can check out their other song called NAMAHAGE. More power to you guys!!!
Those "old guys" have produced at least 20 albums in Japan and the lead and bass have been together for 30 years. The drummer is a later addition.
Scat is a jazz term....
Didn’t know that
@@BowsersreactionPit
I just love the "Heartless poop" translation, though.
Their genres are heavy metal, doom metal, and prog rock. Japanese bands are not so easily pigeonholed as some Western bands.
HELL YEAH! this was awesome. I love seeinghearing something I wasnt aware of being in existence. Thank Y'all.
One of the best prog metal band ever.
Ningen Isu is definitely one of the most talented metal bands in Japan. Their career is more than 30 years. Try “ namahage” and “ dodarebachi”. Great songs!
I love the long intro, slowly building up and then suddenly cutting back to give you a bit of a jolt. It changes just a little bit at a time and then drawing it all back lets you notice it more. I tend to really like longer songs in general, actually. One of my favourite songs is Dogs by Pink Floyd at 16 minutes. I don't think it would work as well if it was shorter.
Wait what, ok yea....Only in Japan...… My new favorite band.
Hahaha- surprised to see the old dudes still rocking?? Good surprise, I hope🤞 These guys have been playing for 30 years and are now touring overseas. Sabatth is still alive...better believe it.
would love to hear your reaction from these guys more.
Welcome to Ningen Isu, good journey
As far as I know, Ningen Isu usually create their lyrics off folk lores, tales, books, etc. Heartless Scat, I think, is based on Le Miserables (あゝ、無情), a French novel. 無情 means heartless. The novel is about a man's journey to salvation and redemption after being jailed 19 years for stealing a bread for his sister's hungry kids.
Gotta love the craziness of Japanese hard rock. South Koreans might do the best boy-band/girl-band pop, but when it comes to crazy hard rock, its hard to bear the Japanese. So much really good stuff out there - especially their all girl metal bands. Easy to listen to ... easy to look at.
I recommended this ages ago...so awesome huh? ^_^
They spent about their first 25 years largely in obscurity (they were working day jobs still), before finally breaking through in Japan in about 2013-2014, that got them some traction, they started to get really popular online and now they've been snowballing in popularity steadily since, even going overseas for a few shows for the first time in their career earlier this year. Part of them never catching on was due to location, being from the city of Hirosaki, up north in the fairly rural Aomori prefecture, when most of the country's music scene is based between Tokyo and Osaka, which is where the internet has really helped them finally build the fanbase they deserve. They're absurdly talented as well as consistent; with over 20 albums you'd be hard pressed to pick out a dud. They skillfully fuse prog rock, heavy metal, hard rock and doom metal in different combinations for a unique package every album, they even have a few thrash metal songs.
The guy with the round glasses looks like the foreign guy on Karate Kid.
I actually like this one, even with the foreign language.
Great commentary from both of you!
This really took both of us by surprise. Glad you enjoyed it too! Thanks, bud!
Yeah, same here! That intro seemed so long, but then it seemed like there was a very short break and it kicked in.
I usually don't like long intros, but also usually prefer at least some musical intro before the lyrics start. But these preferences can vary depending on the song.
@@BrianJoslyn I agree. The payoff has to be well worth the buildup and anticipation.
Great reaction! Ningen Isu is a fabulous hard progressive rock band from Japan. Love them!
Do you know "Lovebites"? The epic power metal japanese girlband!
You will be VERY impressed!!!
Thanks for the great video
Dont know shit about this band but love their songs, recently discovered one of their song - Caterpillar, can't stop listening to it till this day.
Finally they gave a review on ningen isu those old dudes rocks
I only heard this song for the first time today thanks to a recommendation from a fellow Babymetal fan, I loved it
Surprised you never mentioned the Black Sabbath vibes. Love that riff that leads into the chorus
Too late for me but still watching you before bed❤
i remeber back in the days i suggested this video
Twelve foot ninja - one hand killing! Have to react to this!
Wow nice! 🤘
Nice. Sounds like they did a rock medley of sorts. They look about my age too hehe.
Bowser I love your shirt and would like to have one. Can I order a couple?
Interesting yall heard rush in it, I was getting a lot more early Tony Iommi vibes from the guitarist, especially during the solos
Literary Master, A monk and a Yakuza.
I'm gonna download this song. Tnx
You could also react to band maid..and day dreaming is one of the great song of band maid..just a rock band..all girl group.. 👍👍👍
FINALLY!! :)
Haha thought I'd be trolled too
But this is fantastic
Finally! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
any japanese band is no joke brothers 😊
Finally! I message you that on fb.
Try reacting to Galneryus. It's a Japanese band too. 👌
Running out of bog rolls these days, holy scat and what a discovery... 👏
That was actually pretty cool! I'll have to check out more of their stuff. I have a recommendation for you. Check out Veil of Maya. Lead singer Lukas Magyar joined the band in 2014. I used to babysit him back in the day here in Wisco. There's videos for 4 songs... Mikasa... Aeris... Overthrow... and Double Speak. I like all of them so take your pick!
If you aren't too scared to try something different/better than what you are used to, check out the Japanese band Lovebites. Their song, When Destinies Align will change your life, if you'll let it.
"heartless" because (in the guitarist's own words) the narrator is selfish in the first two verses, then realizes there are tons of other living things in the world, and becomes self-less in the final verse when he concludes all other things deserve a light shone on them too. A truly touching lyric. Crazily ironic, as *this* is the song that brought them sudden international recognition after 30 years (a song whose first half is all about failure in life).
do MaximumTheHornone nxt!! \m/
Maximum the Hormone stands a very good chance of getting them a copyright strike.
ラッシュだぁん?弘前時代のアルバムきけぇ!あ、訳詞あるからな確かに歌詞は哲学的かも?
Nice! Finally, a Japanese band. I've been waiting for you guys to react to Japanese metal. Please react to A Crowd of Rebellion - BLACK ANTHEM. Let's headbang to this!
Writing this down for investigation in the pit! Thank you very much for the recommendation and support!!
@@sportosp-0158 I'm a fan of your cheek wrinkles! lol
@@sportosp-0158 Master Sporto, sorry but there's no MV for "Black Anthem". Please react to "Ill" instead by A Crowd of Rebellion. Hope you grant this request as birthday gift for me. Love you guys.
Please react to wagakki band
Its mix of Japan traditional sound with rock style
Great to see you two get it at the end. These guys have been on the Japanese music scene for more than 30 yrs ( zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BA%BA%E9%96%93%E6%A4%85%E5%AD%90 ). And "scat", yeah. First there's the translation problems from Japanese, where it means one thing, to English, where it means something else. Just like in english one word or a combination of words may have multiple meanings depending on the context. Some meanings are sarcasm or double-entendres that aren't meant to be taken literally. The Japanese have a different mental relationship with "scat/poo" than do Westerners. There are many poo related cartoons & illustrations that are very culturally connected. The most famous being Makoto Chan. And 2ndly, Scat is a very well known & popular music & vocal style that persists to a lesser degree today. czcams.com/video/_W8seC6t7dI/video.html or czcams.com/video/WYzjw5QKrxI/video.html or czcams.com/video/7ItBzDgfcaA/video.html or czcams.com/video/rZo9H_karUE/video.html and of course czcams.com/video/nx0-B-Ly4oQ/video.html !!
Like the bowser's shirt ❤❤❤
Great band....40 yrs in the making.
Solo sound like Eric Claptonish damn
A lot of their sound is 70's KISS, from the bass lines to the ACE-like solo's.
Did you heard about Baby Metal (karate)? I just know that recently, wondering what's your comment.
lol Buddhism and Shinto are the two biggest religions in Japan :p
ハートレススキャットは後半部がいいですね!(>_
If you're looking for a good Japanese band try "Band-Maid"songs "Onset" or "Domination"
Please have a lookof slapshock's carino brutal or agent orange live on myx all music. you'll love it

You don't know the old Jazz man Scat Man?
i think the scat part is the "shabadabadio shabadabadio bababababa" that definitely doesnt sount japanese to me.
They kept saying Rush and then lost the narrative. They missed the late 90's Anthrax in there.
Yeah definitely Anthrax in there. They are more metalhead then i'am how couldn't they hear it?
A matter of the word 'scat' was a little surprising to me.
I'm a Japanese, but I can still remember 'Scatman(Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)', so I've thought that meaning of 'scat' as nonsense voice imporovisation would be widely known in US.
In Japan, the end of 1960's, 'Yoake no Scat' by Saori Yuki was a big hit, the song starting with scat 'Lu lu lu lu...'. So, to us older Japanese, the title seems to come from not only 'Shabadabadia', but also 'Lululu lululu'. Her performance with Pink Martini several years ago is on YT.
Wow thanks for the link to Yoake No Scat. That song was beautiful. I guess now along with all the Japanese rock, pop, and jazz that I've been looking into, I need to add old standards to my list. There just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day lol.
Pls check out yuki d drive, that chick has some pretty fast hands.
Band maid please.
Please listen to Illumina band song called "Illuminate". Illumina band groove metal from philippines.

I liked this...BUT was so distracted by the monk look...
To me the heartless part is when they were talking about their misfortunes, never loving, having success, etc. That's why they pray to Buddha for blessings. The scat part is the "shabba dabba dia" chorus. Scat is a singing style although it's used in jazz. It's nonsensical words in music.
Makes sense💪thank you
Great reaction!! Check "Namahage" by Ningen Isu next!!
and, after that, you have to check "Thrill" by Band Maid from Japan!! This song has over 10million views, will kick your ass!!

react ay romero feat denden gonzales love hurts
Salam kenal
HELLO TO ALL and specially to you 2 guys thanks for the video
Im here to try to explane why heatthless scat
They use scat like shit or trash like say
You hearthless piece of shit
In spanish is easy
Hearthless scat = mierda sin corazon
Now the theme is like a poem , like a pray to entities from low to hi range angels, godess , and buddha.
Is not only a pray is also a claim like ey you angels godes buda etc etc im here with no succes without victorys if u hear me what about that, is like , really are you ther, and if , why my life is tragedy .
In the change of the son almost at the end
All is about we have a light , theres a star for us , any creature have a light, (light means power, means strong, means good luck, means strenght)
at last angels goddess budha they can go to do nothing they dont matter, the true power to victory is in the true power to victory is within ourselves.
Why scat ? Well heatthless scat is say to angels destiny goddes and buda we dont care to they , they are hearthless Even in our suffering, they did not help the protagonist of the story is a pray is a claim
My English is very bad, but I really hope that at least someone can understand my explanation. In the Spanish language we have many ways to express a feeling, or a phrase, there are different ways of giving them a textual interpretation, in the Japanese language it also tends to get various interpretations, it is not so precise
this band started in 1985.......
Metallica does the same thing with the beautiful instrumental
