Spent the 60's and 70's swimming off New Smyrna Beach. My sister and I would swim to the sand bars that were way out all the time. Never had any info on sharks. Don't know what kind of shark it was but we came within 4 feet of each other. Part of his head came out and quickly turned away from me. I had to swim through a couple of sand bars to get back. Terrified is too light a word to describe the fear I had. I was a good swimmer and prayed the entire time back it wouldn't get me. A few months later Jaws came out and never went back again, I have always been curious about sharks and love to watch anything I can about these beautiful creatures. Your stories are wonderful to hear. I'm so happy to come across this website. Thank you.

When you say "part of his head came out" do you mean his teeth or what?! Cos that would be a great White😳I think New Smyrna is famous for Bull sharks which are probably the most dangerous.

I think it was a shark too large to get up to Denise, so it was able to get its head up into the shallow water to bite her then wriggle its way back into the water with her. The body of the shark was above the water as it held her down I think because it was probably near bottoming out where it was then.

I grew up in New Smyrna Beach! We knew sharks existed in Florida, but you never think it’s YOUR beach that is most dangerous. I found out later, that new Smyrna beach was/is the shark bite capital of the world.
When I was 7 or 8 I was chest deep in the water with my grandfather and he turned to me and the color had drained from his face. He looked like he saw a ghost. He told me to head back, and I did. I didn’t need an explanation his face said it all. As I had turned and was heading back something brushed my leg that felt rough and coarse and it was too murky to see (emerald green murky water). We both made it back okay. But my grandfather never went in the water again, and I went in to my knees but no further.
All these years later I think it probably was a bull shark. But who knows? I never thought Great Whites were in the area either until a few years back they caught a 7 footer in the river of all places.

Nice channel! I really like the way you present the facts, concisely and quickly, and don't try to embellish them. Good job. So here's my fish tail.
It was 1980 or '81 (I am old as dirt now, so don't come for me or my fading memory). My ex boyfriend and I were living in Flour Bluff, Texas, which is outside Corpus Christi and a couple of miles from the national seashore. We pretty much lived at the beach on weekends and sometimes week day afternoons, after work.
I had purchased a brand new fishing rig and could not wait to try it out. A friend of ours had recently gotten married so he and his bride joined us one weekend to go out and do a little surf fishing. I was trying to befriend this new woman in our lives so I suggested that she and I stay on the beach and catch some rays. she immediately seemed to doze off, so I was pretty much by myself. My ex took my brand new fishing rig and he and Gary waded out to the 3rd sandbar off the shore. On the sandbars, you walk up a slight incline so the water is not as deep, but you can cast out past the 3rd sandbar into very deep water.
I looked out to where they were, and knew something was up. They appeared to be inching their way backwards towards shore and they both had both of their arms up in the air. For a second I didn't see my new rig and I thought surely he did not drop my rig in the water and lose it. We had an old pair of binoculars in the back of his truck, so I climbed into the bed of the truck and looked out at them through the binoculars, and I was right--they were inching their way backwards with their arms up and my ex was empty handed. About that time I saw in front of them, maybe 5' or 6' ahead, a fin came up and then went back down. I didn't believe my eyes and I kept watching, and a few seconds later I saw the fin rise up out of the water again, only now it was behind them. The shark was circling them. I kept watching and saw the fin come up again towards their side headed towards the front. I yelled at the dozing bride. I didn't say there's a shark out there, because I was already panicked enough for both of us. I ran down to the water. I was afraid to yell at them--was afraid they might try to turn and run even though you can't run in water like that. So I sort of stood there staring in shock for what seemed like an eternity.
It was taking them forever to even get to the next sand bar back. I thought once they got up on that sandbar where the water was probably knee deep, the shark would not follow them any further. Once they got up the 2nd sandbar and they came down off it--between it and the 1st standbar--I saw the fin...it was still circling them. It had followed them over the sandbar. By then, a crowd of maybe 40 people had gathered on the beach and were watching. They all knew what was going on-- you could clearly see the shark fin from where we were. I asked if anybody could help, and somebody said they would go down the beach to the park ranger station and get help.
A couple minutes later a Nueces County LE car showed up and 2 officers got out and walked right up to the water and stood there looking, and I screamed "aren't you going to do something?" and one said "what do you want us to do?" I yelled "shoot it," but one of them said if they did, there was a chance that they would shoot 1 of the guys. I was nearly in tears, so the office that had said that they shouldn't shoot it took off his shoes and socks and rolled up his pants a couple of times and started out in the water but didn't go more than maybe a few feet off shore, grabbed his gun and just stood there. Now, looking back, I guess there really wasn't much they could do.
So, everyone just stood and watched, holding our breath. Finally the guys made it to the 1st sandbar where the water is maybe shin deep and I just knew there's no way a shark would go beyond, that but it did. I saw the fin right after they started coming down off of that bar, but then I didn't see it again after that. When they got about 10 yd off shore, they turned and started running, picking their knees way up out of the water so that they could gain a little speed. My ex was white as a sheet. My 1st comment was "where's my new fishing rig?" I was trying to aid levity to the situation.
My ex said that he had hooked a junk fish called a Hardhead Catfish and reeled it in,and as he pulled the pole up and the fish cameout of the water, right behind the fish came a set of jaws. It was huge he said, and he immediately tossed my fishing pole at the shark, hoping it would take the fish and the pole and just go away. But of course it didn't. One of the LE officers told me he wasn't sure about what type of shark it was, but he could tell it was about 8' long.
For someone who likes stories told concisely, I just realized this is an epic length story, but I can't leave without adding a side note. In the 1st few months there, on 3 or 4 occasions in the water, I felt something bump me, usually my thigh area. The water in the Gulf is murky--you can't really see more than a couple inches below the surface. I could tell that whatever bumped me each of those times was not a tiny fish--it was much bigger. I told my ex, who made a joke out of it, telling me it was just a little fish, but I knew better.
After that day with the shark, my ex rarely ever went into the water. We would still go to the beach, but he would stand around the truck and act busy, picking up things out of the sand, or playing with the dogs, while I would be out on the sandbar fishing. I didn't get another new rig. Since he rarely fished again, I just used his rig after that. Lol.
Moral is: trust your spidey sense. If something bumps you and it feels like it's a foot wide, it probably is a foot wide.

My Brother told me a story about what happened to him when he was on a sports fishing boat off the coast of Long Beach, Ca. He would fish by the bulkhead so when he would cast his line his feet could hit it and save him from going over into the water. Well this time he missed it and over he went. This day was very cold and the water was choppy. But having been brought up in, near and on the ocean, he was not concerned. He swam to the stern to get on the boat but had trouble as he was wearing rubber boots, jeans and a flannel shirt. Plus as the boat went up he would go down. He took off his boots and some passengers helped him up. JUST as his feet left the water, four Mako sharks came from underneath the boat!! Like they had swam the length of the boat to the back. Needless to say he never forgot that experience.

I grew up for 30 years on Vancouver Island. Swimming and fishing . We have tons of seals. Since the GW likes cooler waters do you think they’re there? I know they say we have Makos, basking, dogfish and sixgill at Hornby Island Flora Inlet. I actually dived there and saw them with a tour. I don’t dive now though. But still can’t stop wondering about the GW in Campbell River area particularly Rebecca Spit. I had the eeriest feeling kayaking there and suddenly surrounded by seals Mind you Orca are not Uncommon either. Thanks for your fantastic videos.

I'm an avid fisherman on the west coast of Florida. I mainly fish the gulf coast and occasionally the Atlantic around Daytona. I fish from a kayak most of the time with a buddy.
A few weeks ago, we were fishing about a mile from shore on a grass flat. The water has been extremely dirty - looks like strong iced tea. It was a tough day fishing, but I did get a nice whiting that I put on a stringer tied to the left side of the kayak, as usual. I was continuing fishing when the stringer started moving erratically from the corner of my eye and immediately knew something was after my fish. I reached to grab the rope when a 3½ foot bull shark comes rushing into the side of the kayak, scaring the crap out of me! Almost simultaneously, I had grabbed the stringer and started pulling. I felt no resistance, so I thought good, he missed it. Then got to the end, which had nothing but the head of my whiting left. Lol What I wouldn't give to have that on video!

I bought a book years ago at the airport in Australia to read on a flight to Bali. One of the stories was of a group of young teens skurfing (towed on a surfboard behind a boat) in a tinny (small aluminium vessel) in south Australia and one fell off, as they circled around to pick him up he was taken by what they said was an extra large (6+ meter) great white but also there was another smaller great white involved when after the initial attack the two sharks tore him in two. From memory the teens said they wanted it killed as it was just way too big. My memory of the story is a little hazy and I don’t have the book anymore but if you could find information on this attack it would be great to hear you tell the story. From that particular book this was the one that stood well above the rest as frightening as the boys seen it happen right next to the boat and where all petrified for the sheer size of the initial creature let alone having the other one help rip him in two. Loving the channel and excited to hear more from you ❤️

I feel like the ocean is a part of me running deep in my veins lol. When I lived in Cali an enormous shark beached and died. They had it in a glass case and I will never forget it. I have always been fascinated by sharks...their horrendous size and power is unbelievable! I have lived in Indiana and hadn’t seen the ocean in 35 yrs and I always told my family I want to see the ocean before I die. This past June one of my daughters took me to gulf shores and I literally cried when I saw it. I’ve always watched anything I can about the ocean and swore I would never ever get over my ankle deep but every day for 4 days I was in the ocean to my neck and of course I could touch bottom until wave came. My kids asked me about my fear of sharks and I said that I love the ocean so much and I actually love all the animals yes even sharks (great whites and orcas are 2 of my top fav) that if I were to be bitten and lose my life that they should know I wouldn’t have it any other way!
