- So, I was wondering why Baby Mario and Luigi have eyes similar to Toad. Aren't their eyes supposed to look human? I mean, even Baby Peach herself looks humanoid. And it gets even more puzzling when that bully wears glasses because I can't figure out if his eyes look humanoid or not. So, I was thinking, maybe Nintendo intentionally did this to avoid confusion about the appearance of their eyes. Or is it related to Mario & Luigi’s true origins that they are struggling with?

Understood the reference that people are saying the toad eyes are meant to resemble from the games.
But I would prefer Nintendo/Illumination to change the eyes to look humanoid which is what baby Peach look like. And keep in mind that the King Penguin, Fire DK and Ice Peach are created for the movie, NOT from the game.
I know it’s a daring move for them to change the eyes and i think it would spark a controversy at the end. But hey, i had fun editing the eyes and wanted to know how it turned out.
Baby Mario and Luigi in Mario Kart Wii had those eyes, and Baby Peach in MKWii also has his humanoid eyes! So thats why.

2. In Yoshi's Island series, Baby Peach had humanoid eyes and the Mario Bros. had Toadish eyes so yeah

They exactly resemble themselves in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. The sclera (white part of the eyes) only shows when they’re shocked or surprised 😳
They're also seen in sports games. Such as kart.

Yes, that's true! Also, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi first appearance was in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island with the exact same beedy eye designs.

They wanted baby Peach to look cute so they gave her big eyes, and the brothers got small eyes because that wouldn't work for them, it's just design choice

Baby Mario and Luigi were like that ever since 1995, most probably due to Super Nintendo limits. Changing the eyes would be an ultra-cursed appearance at this point.
6 months late, but it wouldn't be from a limitation since white already exists in their color palette, it's just straight-up a design choice that Nintendo had thought looked good ever since (and it does).

The dots are also due to sprite limits in the 1990s, which is the same reason why the bros. had dot eyes in the NES (and SNES when small) while TV and art showed normal eyes for them.

Meanwhile in the 80s Super Mario bros was made, and so was The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Mega Man. Belive me the graphic limitations of the SNES wasn't the issue, they made baby Mario with those eyes because they are cute. The end.

I think it’s about confirmed that the movie more so follows the logic of the cartoon show from the late 80s and early 90s, hence the logic and lore of the movie itself. Of course not everything is perfect (for example, Bowser being named King Koopa in the cartoon show) but I think it’s a lot closer to the Super Show than the games.

The answer: They look better with black eyes as babies while Peach's facial structure looks good with the human eyes. These designs give their expressions the effects that the art director wanted.
